Background

Jiraiya trained in Sage Arts at Mount Myōboku from a young age and was guided by Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima. The Great Toad Sage later foretold that Jiraiya would teach a disciple capable of bringing either stability or destruction to the shinobi world. 238 239

Alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru, he became one of Konoha's Legendary Sannin. The title originated after their humiliating defeat by Hanzō, who bestowed it to avoid provoking Konoha's retaliation; the three subsequently strove to reach Kage-level strength. 95
