Background and History

Bean survived as Abomination’s unborn child after a nuclear strike in the Oria Basin. Abomination transferred its remaining life force and consciousness to her. Omega later recovered the cub and kept her alive, but found that she could not continue growing apart from her mother. Yuan Zhen injected her own genes into Bean, after which Bean took on a human appearance and her physical development halted 202 209.

Yuan Zhen entrusted Bean to Sato Yu after he lost his pilot partner. He raised her as his daughter, gave her the name Douzi and eventually fought alongside her as a pilot. Bean had no memory of her early childhood; Sato Yu’s searches through public records found no trace of her past 63 179 203 209.

While staying with Bai Ying at the Black Horn Underground Industrial Base, Bean revealed that the green liquid she used to grow plants was not the advertised fertilizer. She demonstrated its source by pricking her finger: her blood turned green as it spread through water. Bai Ying chose to keep the discovery secret 69 70.

During the battle against Abomination, Sato Yu forcibly disconnected Bean’s neural link and sent her into an escape pod to keep her clear of Hegemon’s planned self-destruction. Bean broke free and returned. She subsequently emerged in a monster form, confronted Abomination and learned that it was her mother. The survivors’ hesitation to accept her left her shaken, though Bai Ying urged her to remember that she belonged with them 200 202.

After the battle, Bean accepted her monstrous form and left for the sparsely inhabited continent of Oria, parting from Bai Ying 206.

Appearance

Bean usually appears as a young girl whom Bai Ying estimated to be around thirteen or fourteen. Her monstrous form resembles a smaller Abomination and changes as she evolves 63 202 204 205.

• Short, soft black hair and sky-blue eyes in her human-presenting form 63 69.
• Hardened skin, protective bone growth and bone-and-flesh protrusions along her spine during her fight with Abomination 204 205.

Personality

Bean cannot speak, but communicates through gestures and actions. She is perceptive enough to guide Bai Ying through the explanation of her plant-growing liquid, and the children at the underground base call her the “gentle big sister” 62 69 70.

She is strongly attached to Sato Yu: rather than remain in the escape pod he prepared for her, she fights to return to his cockpit. Discovering her origin leaves her frightened and uncertain of where she belongs 200 202.

Monstrous physiology

Fusion energy

• Abomination — Biological mother. Bean fights her after learning their connection, while Abomination seeks to reclaim her child 202 204 205.
• Yuan Zhen — Omega researcher who used her own genes in the experiment that produced Bean’s human appearance and entrusted her to Sato Yu 209.
• Butterfly — Its machine soul takes Bean’s appearance in Bai Ying’s consciousness. Yuan Zhen later identifies Bean’s consciousness as the prototype for Omega’s machine souls 171 208.
