Background / History
During the war with Konoha, Sand Shinobi pursue Yueguang Han through a trapped forest in a squad of roughly thirty. Their attempt to capture him alive for intelligence leads them into his explosive-tag trap; more than twenty are killed in the ensuing blast, and the later investigation finds no survivors from the pursuing unit. 1 2
A twenty-one-member elite infiltration squad led by Captain Ohno later enters Konoha's rear to gather intelligence, locate outposts, assassinate shinobi, and disrupt logistics. Mistaking Han's low chakra signature for that of a fleeing Genin, they attempt to capture him; the squad is nearly annihilated after discovering his regenerative metallic body and firearm-based Bloodline Limit. 4 5 6 7
Sand Shinobi establish a heavily trapped valley stronghold guarding a strategically vital transportation route. Under Elite Jonin Luo Fei, they use Earth Release users to operate underground, construct tunnels between buildings, and evade Han's sniping. Although they repel Konoha's initial infiltration attempt, they suffer substantial casualties and request reinforcements. 21 30 31
As the conflict escalates, Sand Shinobi fight alongside Stone Ninja at the Heaven and Earth Bridge and later coordinate with other villages against Konoha. Their forces continue to prioritize Yueguang Han's elimination because of the battlefield threat posed by his long-range weapons and mechanized transformations. 77 78 103
Organization and Tactics
- Infiltration and disruption — Squads bypass main battlefields to collect intelligence, locate camps, assassinate enemy shinobi, and sabotage supply lines. 4
- Trap warfare — Forest routes, strongholds, and retreat paths are seeded with steel wire, kunai, Explosive Tags, and other traps to delay or ambush enemies. 1 21 27 38 103
- Earth Release maneuvering — Earth Release specialists tunnel beneath the battlefield, move between buildings, hide from snipers, and launch underground ambushes. 11 26 30 31
- Coordinated ninjutsu — Units combine Earth, Wind, Fire, and Lightning Release to restrict targets' movement, obscure vision, erect defenses, and create openings for close combat. 10 12
- Night ambushes — Sand forces disperse during the day to conserve strength, then mass at night to strike Konoha units and drive them into prepared traps. 103
- Signal system — Colored smoke flares communicate battlefield orders: yellow signals retreat, while black signals warn units to avoid a dangerous area—particularly Yueguang Han. 103
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release
Sand Shinobi frequently use Wind Release offensively and defensively, including attacks capable of cutting flesh, generating hurricanes, clearing battlefield dust, and disrupting enemy movement.
- Gale Palm and Beast Wave Palm are used in the ambush against Yueguang Han. 5
- Wind Release: Suppression severely damages Han's outer flesh but fails to destroy his T800 framework. 6
- Great Breakthrough, Hurricane Assault, Wolf Fang, and Wind Cutter are used in coordinated attacks. 10 12
- Wind Release is used to clear dust during the Heaven and Earth Bridge assault, allowing Sand and Stone forces to renew their charge. 78
Earth Release
Earth Release is central to Sand Shinobi defense, concealment, and mobility.
- Earth Wall provides temporary cover from firearm attacks, though ordinary walls can be penetrated by sufficiently powerful armor-piercing rounds. 6 12 113
- Mind Destruction Art drags targets underground to expose them to close-range attacks. 11
- Underground units tunnel through forests and strongholds to evade sniping and communicate without exposing themselves. 30 31
- Earth Release users establish defensive positions, traps, and tunnels along Konoha's escape route after Rasa orders a retreat. 38
Team Coordination
Sand Shinobi rapidly adapt their formations after encountering unfamiliar threats.
- They use Earth Walls, clones, vision obstruction, Body Flicker, and Substitution Jutsu to reduce Han's firing opportunities. 10
- They close distance to negate firearms, using Earth Release to immobilize Han before Jonin attack with kunai. 11
- Units protect leaders and wounded comrades, including a sensory shinobi who uses his last Earth Wall to shield Yakura. 12
- Two members of Ohno's squad sacrifice themselves to delay Han and enable their captain's escape with intelligence. 6 7
Known Personnel
- Ohno — Elite Jonin and captain of a twenty-one-member infiltration squad. He recognizes that Han is not a puppet but possesses an unknown Bloodline Limit; he attempts to escape with intelligence and dies after recording it on the ground. 4 6 7
- Yakura — A Sand kunoichi with Scorch Release. She leads Sand forces in several engagements, coordinates with Chiyo and Rasa, and later works with Stone Ninja during the Heaven and Earth Bridge battle. 10 12 47 78 103
- Luo Fei — Elite Jonin commanding the valley stronghold. He organizes its defense, orders casualty management, recalls Earth Release users, and requests reinforcements after Konoha's attack. 30
- Rasa — Elite Jonin who uses Gold Dust and is considered a direct counter to Yueguang Han. He leads pursuit forces, orders tactical retreats, and deploys traps and tunnels to slow Konoha's withdrawal. 33 38 46 47
- Chiyo — Senior Sand leader who identifies Yueguang Han as a strategic threat and orders his assassination during the frontline battle. 46
- Sasori — Rogue Sand shinobi identified by Han as the murderer of the Third Kazekage; he later clashes with Han and escapes via a prepared tunnel. 10 115
Story Role / Major Arcs
Forest Pursuit
A Sand squad pursues the wounded Yueguang Han, underestimates his traps, and is destroyed by his explosive-tag ambush. 1 2
Ohno Infiltration Squad
Ohno's unit detects Han and attempts to seize him. Their attacks reveal Han's T800-like body, regeneration, and weaponized limbs; the survivors retreat while sacrificing comrades to carry intelligence back. 4 5 6 7
Yakura Engagement
Yakura's force attempts to overwhelm Han with Scorch Release and coordinated elemental attacks. Han kills six hidden shinobi with Barrett rifles before the survivors use movement, cover, and teamwork to reduce his shooting advantage. 10 11 12
Valley Stronghold Campaign
Sand Shinobi defend a trapped transport-route stronghold against Konoha's infiltration force. Their Earth Release tactics and underground defenses force Han's group to retreat, despite severe losses within the stronghold. 21 26 27 30 31
Rasa Pursuit
Rasa leads Sand forces against Konoha's retreating unit and counters Han's abilities with Gold Dust. Han's aerial long-range attacks ultimately compel Rasa to withdraw his forces underground and shift to trap-based pursuit. 33 36 37 38 39
Frontline and Mount Kikyo Battles
Sand Shinobi deploy giant mechanical ninja tools, ballistae, and large formations against Konoha. Han's 75mm cannons, sniping, mortars, and machine-gun fire inflict heavy casualties, forcing repeated tactical withdrawals and making his assassination a priority. 46 47 53
At Mount Kikyo and Kikyo City, Sand forces resist Konoha's invasion through direct assault, disguised civilian operatives, suicide bombing, chakra sealing, and evacuation under civilian cover. Han survives these efforts and continues supporting Konoha's advance. 107 108
Heaven and Earth Bridge Alliance
Sand Shinobi join Stone Ninja forces in a large assault on the Konoha-held outpost. Despite their numerical advantage, smoke cover, and coordinated charge, Han's thermal-sensing machine guns and Konoha's defenses cause heavy casualties. 77 78
Later Sunagakure Strategy
Sunagakure employs a scorched-earth policy in the Land of Rivers, destroying supplies and resources to hinder Konoha's advance. At Howling Wind Canyon, Sand Shinobi attempt to stop Konoha's crossing with Earth Walls, explosive-tagged livestock, and direct resistance, but are overwhelmed by Konoha's weaponized armor. 112 113
Trivia
- Sand Shinobi initially mistake Yueguang Han's metallic body for a puppet, but Ohno concludes it is an autonomous and unknown Bloodline Limit. 6
- Water Release users are described as rare among Sand Shinobi due to the Land of Wind's environment, limiting their ability to test a suspected weakness in Han's defenses. 10
- Sand Shinobi recover and report battlefield intelligence even at extreme personal cost; Ohno's final act is to scratch information about Han's ability into the ground. 7
