Background / History
Training and Forbidden Research
Orochimaru is the Third Hokage’s prized disciple and one of the Sannin. By his first meetings with Yueguang Han, he has already begun forbidden experiments in pursuit of immortality, but has not yet developed Living Corpse Reincarnation 16 17.
As commander of the Sunagakure front, he orders ten elite shinobi, including Minato Namikaze, to destroy an important enemy supply point. His wartime ambitions also include securing the position of Fourth Hokage 11 51.
Interest in Yueguang Han
After hearing that a newly graduated Genin has killed numerous Sand Shinobi and forced Yakura of the Scorch Release to retreat, Orochimaru summons Han for a demonstration. He quickly analyzes the strengths and limitations of Han’s shotgun and machine-gun transformations, but correctly suspects that these weapons alone cannot explain his survival 15 16.
Han’s exposed metallic skeleton, nanite blood, and rapid healing turn Orochimaru’s curiosity into intense desire. He recognizes a possible route to the immortality he seeks and offers to make Han his disciple. Han refuses because of Orochimaru’s danger and ulterior motives 17.
Orochimaru nevertheless grants Han military recognition and assigns him to missions with his clansmen. He later brings Han under his direct command while sending the Gekko Clan back to the village as escorts for the wounded—an assignment that removes them from the front lines 18 44.
Command on the Sunagakure Front
Orochimaru incorporates Han’s weaponry into Konoha’s battle plans and arranges Lightning Release support to replenish his energy. After observing repeated resupply, he deduces that Han can store absorbed lightning rather than merely consume it immediately. He eventually places fifty Lightning Release shinobi under Han’s orders for the remainder of the war 46 47 51.
When Sunagakure offers peace and Iwagakure attacks the Land of Fire, Orochimaru accepts the need to halt the offensive despite Han’s anger. He assigns the Gekko Clan to Han’s command and sends him to the Land of Earth battlefield 55.
On Han’s later return to the Mount Kikyo front, Orochimaru assigns him the Hyuga and Gekko clans and all Lightning Release shinobi. He also sends Han to counter Sunagakure’s dispersed forces around the mountain 99 100.
Mount Kikyo and Growing Distrust
At Kikyo City, Orochimaru knows that Sunagakure has gathered roughly one hundred thousand Land of Fire civilians inside the city. With Konoha’s forces outnumbering the defenders by more than two to one, he proceeds with the assault, eventually ordering five thousand shinobi into the city 106 108.
Privately, he hopes the Sand Shinobi will injure Han enough to leave usable blood. Han’s resistance to genjutsu, sealing techniques, and poison makes Orochimaru increasingly doubtful that he can subdue him directly. After witnessing Han defeat eleven Jonin-level attackers, he collects surrounding corpses, soil, and battle traces through summoned snakes 108.
Han later learns that his parents died in an operation that used wounded escorts as bait. The account links Orochimaru’s temporary reassignment to protecting his Hokage candidacy, while Nara Shikayama conducted the operation. Orochimaru’s direct involvement is not established by this account, although Han later calls him one of the murderers 111 223.
Reincarnating Han
Orochimaru obtains a sample described as “God’s Blood,” hoping to uncover eternal life and godhood. After a month of research produces no useful result, he turns to Impure World Reincarnation to identify its source 168 169.
He spends half a month preparing the array and uses a dying, crippled old man as the sacrifice, intending to weaken the summoned individual. The blood powder proves to belong to Han, whose arrival fills the cave with killing intent powerful enough to freeze its surroundings 169.
On July 23 of Konoha Year 47, Orochimaru attempts to control the reincarnated Han. Han transforms into his T3000 form before the control takes effect, severing Orochimaru’s connection to the technique. After watching Han reconstruct a living body, Orochimaru realizes that his abilities reside in his soul rather than his blood 170.
The discovery sends him into manic laughter. He withdraws to Ryūchi Cave through reverse summoning, unwilling to remain exposed in the ninja world before pursuing this new understanding 170.
Investigation and Collaboration
Konoha assigns Orochimaru and Jiraiya to investigate Han’s army in the Land of Hot Water. Near Iketani Town, they encounter White Zetsu and a giant mecha, collecting enemy bodies while attempting to escape the encirclement 202 205 206.
Their combined earth defenses withstand repeated rocket attacks, but Orochimaru’s Rashomon is melted through by the mecha’s laser. He suffers shrapnel wounds and burns while trying to approach it. He subsequently faces Altair’s Yamato Transformer alone after Jiraiya and the summoned beasts retreat 206 207 208.
Orochimaru later supplies Han with intelligence and reports on efforts to collect the Gekko Clan’s remains. Han openly distrusts him but considers him indispensable because he is the only shinobi known to possess Impure World Reincarnation. Ryūchi Cave’s inhabitants report that Orochimaru has betrayed Konoha and entered an unknown transaction with Han 223 225.
The Resurrection Deal and Final Opposition
Orochimaru uses his control over the reincarnated Gekko Clan to negotiate for Han’s “God’s Bloodline.” He insists on receiving and activating the template core before awakening the clan and relinquishing control. Han complies, fully activating the Bismarck Battleship Template inside him 229.
At his latest documented appearance, Orochimaru stands against Han—then fighting as Adam—alongside the reincarnated Madara and Hashirama. Orochimaru is also revealed to be reincarnated. He states that they have prepared a countermeasure, and the Three Great Sages use Sage Art: Dragon Vein Technique against Adam’s final attack 236.
Appearance
- Fair complexion: His face is described as fair during the mecha battle, when shrapnel leaves a large gash and scorch marks 207.
- Long tongue: Frequently extends his tongue to lick his lips when excited by unusual abilities or discoveries 16 47 204.
- Sinister smile: His welcoming expression carries an undertone of malice during his first meeting with Han 15.
- Reincarnated form: His Impure World Reincarnation body reforms after the destruction of the Wood Golem’s head 236.
Personality
Orochimaru prizes exceptional talent and openly grants geniuses allowances he would not extend to others. His treatment of Han combines genuine admiration, practical support, and a persistent desire to study or acquire his abilities 18 44 51 108.
His pursuit of immortality drives both reckless experimentation and meticulous caution. He risks summoning someone he fears, yet repeatedly recalculates the array and deliberately chooses a weak sacrifice to limit the danger 17 168 169.
He is a calculating negotiator who exploits emotional vulnerability. During the resurrection deal, he recognizes Han’s desperate wish to see his family and withholds their awakening until his own reward is activated 229.
His curiosity does not eliminate self-preservation: he retreats to Ryūchi Cave after Han’s revival and becomes fearful when confronted by Altair’s charged weapons. He also expresses regret that Han’s deep hatred might have been redirected through earlier guidance 170 208 215.
