History

Konoha participates in the Third Shinobi World War against Sunagakure, Iwagakure, Kirigakure, and later Kumogakure. Its forces use infiltration, assassination, reconnaissance, and counter-infiltration operations alongside conventional battlefield deployments. Sand squads repeatedly penetrate Konoha's rear to gather intelligence, attack outposts, and disrupt logistics. 4

During the war against Sunagakure, Orochimaru commands Konoha's front. Yueguang Han's emergence as a long-range combatant gives Konoha a major advantage, particularly after his artillery attacks at Heaven and Earth Bridge and on the Sand front. Sunagakure ultimately surrenders and renews its alliance with Konoha. 46 72 118 119

Konoha's wartime command is complicated by internal political divisions. Shimura Danzō seeks to recruit Yueguang Han, while the Third Hokage is reluctant to alienate a shinobi with immense prestige among both civilians and the military. The village's leadership also assigns Han twenty-three simultaneous missions in part to delay his rise as a potential Hokage candidate. 85 86 119

After the Third Shinobi World War formally ends, Konoha and Kirigakure sign a peace treaty and mutual-aid agreement. Minato Namikaze is subsequently chosen to succeed Hiruzen as Fourth Hokage. 192 199

Yueguang Han later returns to Konoha after the destruction of the Gekko Clan's territory, confronting Hiruzen over his parents' deaths. His return escalates into open hostility, and a later nuclear explosion causes 130 deaths, more than 14,000 burn victims, and thousands of cases of blindness within the village. 171 172 181

By the final conflict, Konoha is part of the wider resistance against Han's technologically equipped army. His clone forces advance to within thirty kilometers of the village, placing Konoha within range of large-caliber artillery. 198 228

• Third Hokage Sarutobi Hiruzen — Leads Konoha through most of the Third Shinobi World War, manages the village's response to Yueguang Han, and helps organize the international coalition against him. 85 198
