Background
Yu Xiaogang is the son of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan's Thunder Douluo. His martial soul underwent a failed mutation, leaving his cultivation stalled below level 30 for much of his life and feeding a deep inferiority complex. His innate soul power was only half a level, making his eventual advance past level 29 impossible by ordinary means. 156 240 317
Before his public disgrace, Yu was registered at Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy but did not teach fixed classes, generally isolating himself in an academy dormitory and conducting theoretical research. 47
He built a reputation around martial soul theory, particularly the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. Qian Renxue publicly compared his work against older texts and demonstrated that its classifications, spirit-ring adaptation theories, advancement logic, and low-level cultivation advice had been copied from predecessors. The exposure ruined his standing in Nuoding City. 125 126
During the ensuing public debate, Qian Renxue further dismantled his theories regarding spirit-ring absorption limits, martial soul mimicry, and martial soul fusion. She exposed that the Golden Iron Triangle's three-in-one martial soul fusion relied substantially on the blood relationship between Yu and Liu Erlong, his cousin. Yu had long harbored suspicions about Liu Erlong's lineage but buried them to retain both their fusion skill and her affection. 128 129
Following his expulsion from Nuoding Academy and the exposure of his relationship with Liu Erlong, Luo Can placed the Golden Dragon Seal on Yu's martial soul, Luo Sanpao. Luo Can then tempted him with pills and resources, promising a path toward Title Douluo status while secretly intending to use Yu's eventual growth for his own purposes. Yu subsequently returned to Nuoding as a teacher and resumed seeking disciples. 129 130
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is described as a nearly fifty-year-old man with a rigid face and a habitually expressionless, “zombie-like” demeanor. 156 241
- Often maintains a stiff or solemn expression while teaching. 156 241
- His health visibly declines after being poisoned by the Golden Thread Four-Leaf Clover. 228 240
- Later discovers that the poison caused permanent damage to his lower-body meridians and infertility. 228 240
- His body is severely damaged while absorbing his fourth spirit ring, leaving him unconscious and requiring emergency treatment after the process succeeds. 321
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is proud, thin-skinned, and intensely sensitive about his failed mutation and low cultivation. Public criticism of his theory provokes humiliation and resentment rather than self-reflection. 126 157
Despite his damaged reputation, he is diligent in research and genuinely attentive to Tang San's development. He studies soul-beast references, prepares detailed spirit-ring plans, monitors Tang San's physical condition, and warns him to conceal the Clear Sky Hammer. 156 211 231
His mentorship is inseparable from his desire for revenge. After Qian Renxue's exposure, he resolves to cultivate Tang San into a powerhouse capable of destroying Martial Soul Hall and avenging Yu's disgrace. 157 241
Yu is also secretive and self-serving regarding his own advancement. Though his recovery from level 29 was made possible by Luo Can's pills, guidance, and seal, he tells Flender that his gains came from theoretical breakthroughs and a fortuitous encounter. 317
He views Tang San's potential and a future Shrek team as means to restore his public prestige. He hopes that a strong showing at the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament will erase the plagiarism scandal and restore his standing as a theory master. 317
His desperation to surpass his former limits makes him willing to risk an over-four-thousand-year dragon-type fourth spirit ring despite his inadequate physique, nearly costing him his life. 320 321
Abilities & Skills
Martial Soul Theory and Instruction
Yu Xiaogang possesses extensive practical knowledge of martial souls, spirit beasts, and spirit-ring compatibility.
- Correctly deduces that Tang San possesses Twin Martial Souls from the contradiction between Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power. 156
- Identifies Tang San's second martial soul as the Clear Sky Hammer and instructs him never to reveal it or attach spirit rings without permission. 156
- Creates the New Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and uses them to persuade Tang San to become his disciple. 156
- Researches Tang San's spirit-ring route using the Encyclopedia of Soul Beasts. 211
- Develops and teaches a further theoretical work, the Martial Soul Origin Theory, which he continues studying while travelling to Shrek Academy. 225 316
- Gives Tang San detailed field instruction on identifying spirit-beast ages, habits, and characteristics during their soul-hunting expedition. 227 228
Spirit-Ring Planning
Yu Xiaogang designs Tang San's early cultivation path around a control-system Blue Silver Grass martial soul.
- First Spirit Ring — Golden Thread Four-Leaf Clover: chosen to improve toughness and grant basic poison. 211 231
- Second Spirit Ring — Ghost Vine: intended to provide Parasite, Soul Power Siphon, and Shapeshifting Camouflage. 231
- Third Spirit Ring — Snake Root Thorn: intended to improve underground traps, toughness, piercing power, and poison. 231
- Sets a target of at least an eight-hundred-year Ghost Vine for Tang San's second ring. 231
- Although he initially judged a more than five-hundred-year Golden Thread Four-Leaf Clover too dangerous for Tang San, he ultimately supports Tang San's successful absorption of its spirit ring. 228
- After Tang San gains his true first spirit skill, Leaf Volley, Yu instructs him to publicly claim Blue Silver Entangle as his first skill and conceal Leaf Volley as a trump card. 230
Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang's mutated martial soul is Luo Sanpao.
- Its failed mutation contributed to Yu's long-term stagnation and self-perceived failure. 126 156
- Yu describes Luo Sanpao as an intelligent external martial soul capable of acting independently, though Qian Renxue publicly challenges his understanding of its true origin. 128
- Its attacks, which include flatulent emissions, are a frequent source of public ridicule toward Yu. 128
- Luo Can applies the Golden Dragon Seal to Luo Sanpao. 129
- By the time Yu reaches level 38, Luo Sanpao possesses two yellow spirit rings and one purple spirit ring alongside him. 227
- After Yu reaches level 40, Luo Sanpao grows larger and more dragon-like, developing purple-gold fur, small dragon horns, and ears beginning to resemble dragon wings. 276
- Yu later resolves to raise his cultivation and evolve Luo Sanpao into a true dragon. 276
- Its Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline is partially activated during Yu's fourth-ring absorption. Luo Sanpao doubles in size, gains complete golden scales, true dragon claws, purer dragon might, and coils of golden lightning. 321
- Following the evolution, Luo Sanpao more closely resembles the Golden Sacred Dragon manifested through the Golden Iron Triangle's three-in-one martial soul fusion skill. 321
Relationships
- Tang San — Disciple. Yu recognizes Tang San's Twin Martial Souls, accepts him as a student, plans his spirit-ring route, and trains him toward becoming a top-tier soul master. Yu also intends to use Tang San's eventual power to exact revenge on Martial Soul Hall and rebuild his own reputation. 156 157 211 231 317
- Tang Hao — Father of Tang San. Tang Hao directs Tang San to seek Yu as a teacher, later personally entrusting Tang San to Yu's care. 144 232
- Luo Can — Manipulator and observer. Luo seals Luo Sanpao with the Golden Dragon Seal, supplies advancement resources, and initially monitors Yu through the seal while intending to exploit his growth. Luo later severs his active mental connection to the seal, though it remains embedded and sends him an emergency warning when Yu's fourth-ring absorption fails. Luo saves Yu remotely only to preserve Luo Sanpao's Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline. 129 130 157 318 320 321
- Qian Renxue — Adversary. She publicly exposes his copied theory, confronts him over his past, reveals her identity to him, and becomes a central target of his resentment. 125 129 157
- Liu Erlong — Yu's relationship with her is publicly exposed, contributing to his humiliation and expulsion from Nuoding Academy. She is also his cousin, a fact Yu suspected but concealed in order to preserve their relationship and the Golden Iron Triangle's fusion skill. 128 129
- Bibi Dong — Observes him teaching Tang San from concealment and hopes Tang San can carry forward Yu's theories. 169
- Flender — Old friend and fellow member of the Golden Iron Triangle. Yu seeks Flender's help after reaching level 40 and needing a dragon-type fourth spirit ring; Flender accompanies him into the Star Dou Forest and carries the unconscious Yu away for treatment after the ring absorption succeeds. 276 317 321
- Zhao Wuji — Shrek Academy's vice dean. Zhao meets Yu through Flender and joins Flender in escorting Yu into the Star Dou Forest to hunt his fourth spirit ring. 317 321
- Xiao Wu — Tang San's companion. Yu recognizes her usefulness as a potential aid to Tang San and uses martial soul theory and persuasion to draw her into Tang San's circle. 233
Story Role / Major Arcs
Fall from Reputation
Qian Renxue exposes Yu's Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul as copied from earlier works. Yu challenges her to a public debate, but his relationship with Liu Erlong is subsequently exposed; he is expelled from Nuoding Academy and left publicly disgraced. 125 126 129
Luo Can's Bait
After Yu's downfall, Luo Can seals Luo Sanpao and offers him pills, resources, and a route to greater cultivation through power-type dragon species spirit beasts. Yu becomes fixated on the prospect of reaching Title Douluo. 129 130
Tang San's Master
Despite widespread gossip branding him a fraud, Yu identifies Tang San's Twin Martial Souls and accepts him as a disciple. His warning about the Clear Sky Hammer matches Tang Hao's instructions, earning Tang San's trust. 156
Cultivating a Weapon of Revenge
Yu trains Tang San's body, researches plant-type spirit beasts, and develops a three-ring control-system route for Blue Silver Grass. His private goal is to use Tang San's eventual strength against Martial Soul Hall and Qian Renxue. 157 211 231
Poisoning and Continued Advancement
While helping Tang San capture a Golden Thread Four-Leaf Clover, Yu is poisoned and becomes infertile. He later confirms the damage is permanent, but redirects his frustration into cultivating both himself and Tang San. 228 240 241
Yu reaches level 40 and temporarily leaves Nuoding City, instructing Tang San to continue cultivating in his absence. 276 277
Shrek Academy and the Fourth-Ring Hunt
Seeking a dragon-type fourth spirit ring capable of advancing Luo Sanpao's evolution, Yu travels to Shrek Academy and reunites with Flender. He proposes that, if Shrek gains two additional students, Tang San and his companions will enroll there, allowing Yu to build a seven-person team for the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament and reclaim his reputation. 316 317
Flender and Zhao Wuji accompany Yu into the Star Dou Forest, where they locate and restrain a Golden-Scaled Dragon Beast more than four thousand years old. Yu's body begins to collapse after he starts absorbing its spirit ring, prompting the Golden Dragon Seal to summon Luo Can's intervention. 320 321
Luo Can stabilizes the ring energy through the seal, allowing Yu to complete the absorption and advance to level 41. The process partially activates Luo Sanpao's Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline and transforms it into a far more complete dragon-like form, but leaves Yu severely injured and unconscious; Flender removes him from the forest for treatment. 321
