Background / History

The Diary passed from the Blood Rose Family to its Bloodthorn branch and was later sold to the Wizard Tower by a Bloodthorn descendant. Sid sought it for years, but it appeared to choose Thor after Sid threw it at him. Sid believed the book had saved Thor’s life 16 198 501.

Sid’s grandfather Ralph concluded that an owner could have no living blood relatives and could not have killed the previous owner. Thor later learned that Ralph’s supposed ownership rules were unreliable. He also found writing apparently left by multiple previous owners, whose sections commonly ended with “You are dead” 79 253 280.

Thor initially saw the Diary near his left shoulder but could not touch it. In a Consciousness Platform, he became able to hold and open it after assuming the form he recognized as his true self. The Diary subsequently moved into his mental body and became his Locator, advancing him to a Level 3 Apprentice 237 252 282.

After Thor broke a fate the Diary had seemingly fixed, Kismet called him its true master. Thor could then sense and touch the book as a tangible force rather than merely see its image. Later research showed him that its White Pages consumed a finite supply of energy he called Death Energy 707 708 712.

Appearance

The Diary appears as a dark red hardcover book. It once hovered by Thor’s left shoulder; after becoming his Locator, it could appear within his mental body or in his hand 211 282 983.

• White Pages — display written warnings and records of Thor’s experiences 712.
• Black Pages — hold consciousnesses that can communicate with Thor through writing 151 296.
• Golden Pages — rare pages associated with simulations of dangerous futures 712.

Abilities & Skills

Danger warnings

• The Diary presents predictions in written, sometimes cryptic form. Thor has used repeated warnings to test possible actions and identify lethal threats 194 352.
• Its warnings are not exhaustive: it can remain silent when Thor seeks an answer, and its ordinary pages warn him less often as his power grows 372 712.
• After gaining greater control, Thor turns its passive warnings into a form of “death exploration,” though unfocused questions produce less clear answers 715.

Consciousness stabilization

• Seeing the Diary can restore Thor’s clarity when his consciousness begins to collapse. As his Locator, it reduces fluctuations in his Mental Power during spellcasting 50 214 282.
• It intervenes against a shadow targeting Thor’s consciousness, preventing the contact that threatened his cognition 309.

Consciousness storage and communication

• Black Pages confine consciousnesses of the dead. Thor can question their occupants; after strengthening his connection to the Diary, he permits some to observe the outside world and write to him without waiting to be asked 79 237 287.
• The Diary can help stabilize a composite consciousness, as it does for Ann. This does not make every stored entity harmless: Jassim’s Soul Fragment causes Gudo to resist the Diary’s control before his page shatters 317 476.

Golden Page simulations

• Golden Pages let Thor simulate outcomes when ordinary warnings are insufficient. Their creation is linked to intertwined fates over long periods, not simply to the number of deaths 279 516 712.
• Thor cannot use a Golden Page as a Level 3 Apprentice 286.

Relationships

• Thor — the Diary chooses him, becomes his Locator, and eventually comes under his more direct control 252 282 707.
• Kismet — bound to the Diary under its earlier constraints; Thor’s break from a fixed outcome severs some of those bonds 707 708.
