Tier 1 Wizard / Official Wizard 589 Advances using the Elf King's Head as an exceptionally adaptable new skin and Locator; gains a sliver of elven ability and confidence in eventually reaching Tier 2.

Background / History

Byron spent more than a decade working in the Gorsa Wizard Tower's Corpse Room, where he processed so many acquaintances' bodies that he lost count. The experience leaves him outwardly indifferent to death, though it also gives him extensive practical knowledge of corpses, parasites, curses, Evil Spirits, and the Tower's survival rules 54 65.

Near the age limit for promotion, Byron struggles to find and accept a suitable Locator. A Composite Rune construction diagram gives him the inspiration to identify his Locator shortly before turning thirty; he subsequently plans to lead a squad of apprentices outside the Tower in search of advancement opportunities 47.

He becomes Thor's early senior, protector, and creditor after helping with Thor's dangerous body modification. Thor's formula provides Byron with a new understanding of his human skin, enabling him to advance to Level 3 Apprentice 49 52 65.

While attempting promotion to an Official Wizard, Byron forcibly uses selected Evil Thoughts and Evil Spirits to stimulate the fusion of his Locator and spiritual body. Thor later purges these Evil Thoughts from him, temporarily relieving the strain, but Byron continues to pursue the dangerous path of spiritualizing his Locator 248 304 318.

Byron's Gray Matter research draws the attention of Mentor Rum and Ula. After detecting a hidden danger in Gray Matter, he tries to transmit a warning; Ula kills him and destroys the information he was sending 391 392. His Locator's Feigned Death Escape ability sends him into the Interlayer in a death-like state, preserving his consciousness 407.

Thor eventually retrieves Byron from the Interlayer. Having lost his former Locator and become severely weakened, Byron stabilizes himself using the Elf King's Head, which becomes a new skin and rapidly compatible Locator 412 441. This recovery ultimately allows him to become an Official Wizard 589.

Appearance

Byron usually presents himself as an ordinary-looking, expressionless man around thirty years old, but his body and skin are highly abnormal due to repeated modifications, Locator fusion, and later use of the Elf King's Head 589.

  • His original human skin could be difficult to control; before reaching Level 3, he sometimes had to split open his throat to speak 65.
  • When strained by Evil Thoughts, his body becomes cratered and swollen, with ferocious faces pushing out from beneath his skin 304.
  • His former body could transform into a human skin or produce tentacles for combat and defense 113 114.
  • After escaping the Interlayer, he temporarily manifests as a three-headed foam-like figure, then as a small coal-like form, and later communicates through a Fried Fish 406 407 412.
  • The Elf King's Head allows him to retain his familiar appearance while changing his form at will once he develops its functions 443 589.
  • He implants the Phantom Sound Pupil into his left eye socket 443.

Personality

Byron is blunt, restrained, and habitually terse; his frequent response is simply “Mm.” He does not perform warmth conventionally, but his actions repeatedly show practical concern for people he accepts as allies 119 147.

He strongly believes in equivalent exchange. Early in his relationship with Thor, he maintains a notebook recording every credit he owes and deducts payment for each service rendered. After their relationship deepens, he burns the ledger and declares that there is no need to keep accounts between them 54 441.

As a researcher, Byron is exceptionally curious, stubborn, and willing to use himself as an experimental subject. He treats dangerous phenomena—including his own deteriorating mental state—as problems to document and investigate 617 661 757. He also prioritizes foundational knowledge, warning Thor that greater power becomes more dangerous without a solid knowledge system 617.

Abilities & Skills

Dark-Attribute Witchcraft

Byron specializes in dark-attribute Witchcraft and has extensive experience dealing with Evil Spirits, Grudge Spirits, souls, corpses, and spiritual contamination 304 318.

  • Fires a black-line attack capable of decaying a possessed corpse and eliminating the Evil Spirit within it 46.
  • Uses death-imbued black light in combat 662.
  • Can suppress his Magic Power fluctuations so completely that Thor loses mental perception of him 344.
  • Releases mist to obscure vision during an escape from Land Boat forces 131.

Skin Manipulation and Locator Use

Byron's original Locator is linked to his modified human skin. His later Locator is formed from the Elf King's Head's skin 65 441.

  • Uses his skin as a weapon, shield, and disguise rather than allowing it to define his identity 65.
  • Produces tentacles that defend Thor from an attacking branch inside Black Castle 114.
  • Possesses a Feigned Death Escape ability that transfers him into the Interlayer while leaving an apparent corpse behind 407.
  • Loses the former Locator during his escape from Ula, severely weakening him 412.
  • Converts the Elf King's Head's skin into a new Locator within days due to its extreme compatibility with his Mental and Magic Power 441.

Mental Influence and Elven Traits

The Elf King's Head grants Byron a sliver of elven ability and greatly enhances his mental influence 589.

  • Influences nearby targets' perceptions and thoughts; in an unstable state, he makes Xiao Zao experience nonexistent pain and turns it against Thor 662.
  • Causes a hostile Tier 1 Wizard to attack his own companion 662.
  • Can influence even a Tier 3 Wizard's thoughts during an initial meeting 617.
  • Sees invisible entities through his eyes, allowing him to perceive Court Master Flim when Thor cannot 914.
  • His mental power later surpasses that of a Tier 2 Wizard 917.
  • His enhanced mental ability carries a serious risk of contamination, instability, and loss of control 662 757 814.

Research and Experimental Expertise

Byron is a capable independent researcher whose work focuses on advancement, souls, Dark Attribute particles, Black Tide contamination, and elven phenomena.

  • Builds and operates a Soul Fluctuation Sensor for detecting spiritual entities 116.
  • Researches Gray Matter, identifying its potential to expand Dark Attribute particle capacity, shield against distracting thoughts, strengthen the soul, and support Official Wizard promotion 354 392.
  • Develops a verified Gray Matter potion formulation that impresses Mentor Rum 391.
  • Studies Black Tide pollution and the Inertia Formula, including methods to reactivate inert Black Dust 614 713.
  • Uses his own hand to test the relationship between Black Tide pollution and black powder 617.
  • Organizes experiments and directs emergency treatment when Thor absorbs Black Tide pollution 671.

Deception and Negotiation

Byron is calm under pressure and capable of constructing convincing lies from real historical knowledge.

  • Persuades the Evil Spirit Morton to follow his plan by inventing a mission while grounding the deception in genuine information about Chuishou Valley, the Kema family, and Ula 139 140.
  • Falsely claims Thor is the Tower Master's student to pressure Morton and protect Thor's position 142 149.
  • Later infiltrates the Star Gate Council, becomes the leader of a small wizard squad, and secretly remains loyal to Thor and Agu 978.
