Background / History

Aizen originally sought the Hogyoku to surpass the limits of a Shinigami and achieve perfect evolution. While preparing to seize it, he used the Ryoka as a distraction, but Kisuke Urahara's apparent involvement made him doubt whether his plan had been anticipated. 210

During Rukia Kuchiki's execution, Aizen failed to extract the Hogyoku from her. His composure broke, and he attempted to force Urahara out by threatening and attacking Soul Society personnel. 211 212

After Uchiha Tamaharu invaded Hueco Mundo, Aizen rejected the demand to submit and revealed that he considered himself one step from changing the world. Tamaharu overwhelmed him despite Aizen's Hollowfication and complete Hollow transformation, ultimately dismembering and suppressing him. 224 225 229 230

Realizing Tamaharu wielded power from beyond his world, Aizen saw a new route toward evolution and agreed to cooperate.
