Background

Itachi served as an Anbu shinobi during the growing conflict between Konoha and the Uchiha. He sensed that Danzo and Root were targeting his clan, yet remained divided between his loyalty to the village and his family. His strongest personal attachment was to his younger brother Sasuke, whom he reassured and affectionately poked on the forehead before leaving for duty 5.

Uchiha Tamaharu confronted Itachi over his loyalties during the Uchiha evacuation plan. Itachi agreed to support the clan only after personally confirming that Shisui had chosen the same side. He surrendered his Anbu blade and ninja-tool pouch, allowing Tamaharu to seal his chakra 5.

Tamaharu placed a Lightning Seal on Itachi's neck, which absorbed his chakra and would turn the stored chakra into a lethal electric current if removed without authorization. Itachi was then placed under genjutsu, informed of the evacuation plan, and sent through a portal to a prepared stronghold in another world to verify its safety before the clan's relocation 6.

During the evacuation, Itachi believed Shisui had been killed after seeing him unconscious and covered in blood. The shock awakened Itachi's Mangekyō Sharingan and broke his seal, allowing him to serve as the clan's extraction-point defender 16.
