Background / History

Sea Wolf began as an old wooden fishing boat belonging to Nie Yun and his late guardian. It was Nie Yun’s livelihood, home, and only remaining family; the two had called each other “brothers” since Nie Yun’s childhood. Though larger fishing vessels offered better earnings, Nie Yun refused to abandon it. 1 2

A meteorite pierced Nie Yun’s abdomen and punched through Sea Wolf’s hull, leaving the boat close to sinking. Uncle Liu judged the damaged keel a total loss, but Nie Yun stayed aboard rather than leave his “brother.” 1 2 3

After the Mechanical Insects fused with Nie Yun, they repaired the keel, consumed scrap and shipwreck material, and began replacing the vessel’s old structure with Mechanical Insect constructs. Sea Wolf could alter its coloration, disguise itself as a wreck, form tools from its own material, and eventually move under Nie Yun’s remote command. 4 6 7 8 12

The original hull ultimately proved too small for its growing mechanical mass. Nie Yun raised an ancient warship from the seabed, dismantled the original Sea Wolf, and incorporated it into the larger vessel—preserving its name and identity. 14 16
