Origins and theoretical reputation

Yu Xiaogang was the favored youngest son of Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Despite possessing the clan’s pure bloodline, he awakened Luo Sanpao rather than the clan’s signature dragon martial soul, making him a longstanding object of ridicule among the Clear Sky Sect and other spirit masters. 9 90

Yu Yuanzhen believed that Yu Xiaogang possessed a dormant Golden Bloodline with the potential to create a beneficial martial soul mutation, possibly a Radiant Holy Dragon. However, Luo Sanpao’s malignant mutation caused that bloodline to remain dormant. 128 190

Yu Xiaogang’s birth was also tied to a clan taboo: Yu Yuanzhen had married his close cousin, and the resulting pregnancies cost his wife her life. Yu Yuanzhen’s guilt over this loss contributed to his prolonged indulgence of Yu Xiaogang despite his repeated failures and misconduct. 129

His cultivation stagnated at level 29, leaving theory as the field on which he built his identity. At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang immediately dismissed Chen Ming’s Level 7 Heavy Armored Earth Dragon martial soul, but showed intense interest in Tang San’s Innate Full Soul Power Blue Silver Grass. He took Tang San away while disregarding Chen Ming and Old Jack. 8

After identifying Tang San as a Twin Martial Soul wielder, Yu Xiaogang used his theoretical knowledge to convince him to become his disciple. Tang San formally kowtowed and accepted him as master. 9 Yu Xiaogang subsequently taught Tang San theoretical knowledge and personally took him to acquire his first spirit ring. 13 91

Although he initially treated Tang San well and expended effort on his education, their relationship deteriorated after Tang San’s cultivation did not improve upon changing to the Douluo Mental Method. Yu Xiaogang harshly pressured Tang San to reveal his hidden inheritance, while Tang San refused to explain the Mysterious Heaven Skill. 126 128

Yu Xiaogang also directed Tang San to obtain a Ghost Vine spirit ring. During Tang San’s later conflicts with Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan members, the resulting Entanglement and Parasitism abilities proved unable to overcome their defenses. 184

Attempt to recruit Chen Ming

Yu Xiaogang later approached Chen Ming with an offer of guidance in exchange for protecting Tang San. His real interest was also to examine Chen Ming’s rapid cultivation and find a way beyond his own level 29 limit. Chen Ming rejected him, judging that Yu Xiaogang wanted a useful tool rather than a genuine disciple. 21

The rejection intensified Yu Xiaogang’s resentment. Chen Ming’s talent, theoretical ability, and achievements became a direct challenge to the pride Yu Xiaogang had placed in his own scholarship. 90

When Bibi Dong attempted to credit Yu Xiaogang for Chen Ming’s cultivation method and force a connection between them, Chen Ming publicly denied having received Yu Xiaogang’s instruction or guidance. 88

Downfall within the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan

Following a breakdown driven by jealousy, Yu Xiaogang damaged his quarters, attempted to order Luo Sanpao to attack without a target, and then kicked the confused martial soul in rage. A subsequent explosion involving Luo Sanpao’s gas and Yu Luomian’s lightning left him injured and publicly humiliated. 90 91

Upon returning to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, Yu Xiaogang falsely implied that he had taught Chen Ming and continued to interfere with others’ cultivation. A clan member’s modified method—attributed to Yu Xiaogang—was found to trade stability for very little efficiency while risking cultivation deviation. 125 126

Yu Xiaogang also experimented with medicinal concoctions intended to improve Luo Sanpao’s gas-based attacks. Though he conceived a self-created skill called Fart Like Fire, the treatments caused chronic abdominal distress, impaired Luo Sanpao’s intelligence, and exhausted the martial soul’s latent potential. 127 196

Yu Yuanzhen ultimately removed Yu Xiaogang from the clan genealogy after his conduct brought repeated disgrace to the family. Yu Xiaogang’s jaw was shattered, his left hand and right leg were destroyed, and he was confined in the clan’s Death Prison. 127 129

To save himself from execution, he revealed Tang San’s parentage and proposed using Tang San as bait to lure Tang Hao, hoping the clan could seize Tang Hao’s inherited and hundred-thousand-year soul bones. 129

The clan subsequently forced Yu Xiaogang to produce heirs in the hope that his descendants would inherit the Golden Bloodline. The resulting twin sons did not display that bloodline, leaving Yu Yuanzhen further disillusioned with him. His age, injuries, and conditions had caused impotence, requiring ten-thousand-year Whale Rubber as a stimulant; the forced breeding also inflicted irreversible kidney damage. 191

The clan publicly repudiated his claimed association with Chen Ming. Yu Luomian visited the Martial Soul Hall branch in Heaven Dou City to announce the matter and formally apologize, allowing the correction to spread beyond the clan. 130

Escape and refuge at Shrek Academy

After his twin sons failed to inherit the Golden Bloodline, Yu Xiaogang was released from prison and ordered to use Tang San as bait for Tang Hao. Instead, he warned Tang San that the clan intended to capture him and sought Tang Hao’s aid to escape. 191

During the clan’s ambush, Shi Nian attempted to kill Yu Xiaogang and Tang San with a nightmare illusion. Tang Hao intervened, killed Shi Nian, and escaped with both of them after killing Yu Luomian and seriously injuring Yu Yuanzhen. 193 194

Upon reaching Shrek Academy, Yu Xiaogang was mistaken for an impostor and beaten by Lu Qibin. Tang San identified him as an old acquaintance of Flender, prompting Lu Qibin to bring the dean to meet him. 195 196

Yu Xiaogang and Tang San later reached Shrek Academy, where Flender concealed them from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Although Flender remained sympathetic to his old friend, he recognized that Yu Xiaogang’s theories were flawed and no longer regarded him as the foremost authority on soul master cultivation. 196 197

Yu Xiaogang recounted his imprisonment and forced reproduction to Flender but concealed the deadly confrontation accompanying his escape. Fearing that disclosure might cause Flender to hand him over, he begged that both his presence and Tang San’s identity remain secret. Renewed instruction and conflict at Shrek

Tang Chen’s return brought renewed Clear Sky Sect involvement in Tang San’s cultivation. Tang Xiao was assigned to mentor Tang San at Shrek and lead the academy’s tournament team. Learning that Tang San had the support of Tang Xiao and the Clear Sky Sect, with Tang Chen behind them, restored Yu Xiaogang’s confidence and arrogance. 331 345

Yu Xiaogang began directing Tang San and the other Shrek students to run laps carrying baskets of heavy stones. From his wheelchair, he claimed that this was an ancient body-strengthening secret he had encountered in Martial Soul Hall records and promised a special medicinal bath afterward. Tang San complied but questioned the usefulness of the exercise. The narration identifies the supposed secret as a survival and escape practice discarded once humanity had safer and more practical training options. 343

Tang Xiao had provided a Clear Sky Sect medicinal-bath formula and instructed Yu Xiaogang to use it on Shrek’s students. Instead of following it unchanged, Yu Xiaogang combined it with the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s formula, believing that he had extracted the best elements of both. 343

Tang San endured the resulting bath and regarded his teacher’s treatment as ingenious, unaware that Dai Mubai and Oscar were suffering severely in neighboring rooms. When Dai Mubai complained that the bath felt lethal, Yu Xiaogang defended his combination of formulas and attributed the pain to weak kidneys. Offended, Dai Mubai climbed out of the bath, seized Yu Xiaogang by the collar, and lifted him from his wheelchair. 345

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is arrogant, entitled, and highly status-conscious. He initially judges Chen Ming’s dragon martial soul with disdain while treating Tang San’s Innate Full Soul Power as a treasure worth claiming. 8 90 He is particularly proud of his theoretical knowledge, regarding it as the sole remaining proof of his worth after his martial soul and cultivation failed to meet his expectations. 90

His insecurity manifests as jealousy, rage, and an inability to accept criticism. When confronted with Chen Ming’s accomplishments, he lashes out at his surroundings and even at Luo Sanpao. 90 He also resorts to manipulation when threatened, attempting to exploit Tang San’s lineage for his own survival. 129

Despite previously proposing to betray Tang San and Tang Hao, Yu Xiaogang later chose to warn Tang San of the clan’s scheme and sought Tang Hao’s help in escaping. His actions were motivated partly by self-preservation and partly by a revived conviction that he could use Tang San’s future achievements to vindicate himself. 191

Yu Xiaogang remains emotionally immature and deeply resentful of perceived abandonment. Under Shi Nian’s nightmare illusion, he blamed Bibi Dong, Liu Erlong, Yu Luomian, and Yu Yuanzhen for betraying him. 193
