Background / History

Origins and theoretical reputation

Yu Xiaogang was the favored youngest son of Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Despite possessing the clan’s pure bloodline, he awakened Luo Sanpao rather than the clan’s signature dragon martial soul, making him a longstanding object of ridicule among the Clear Sky Sect and other spirit masters. 9 90

His cultivation stagnated at level 29, leaving theory as the field on which he built his identity. He possessed access to core records from both his clan background and Martial Soul Hall connections, and his knowledge was considered substantial even by those who looked down on him. 4 9 21 However, his purported theories—including the Ten Core Competitiveness Theories of Spirit Masters—were described as partly compiled from existing records and partly erroneous; he had previously nearly harmed several clansmen by interfering with their cultivation methods. 125

Yu Xiaogang lived in Nuoding City for more than a decade, believing himself secluded. In reality, both Martial Soul Hall and the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan knew his location through the monthly ten-Gold-Soul-Coin stipend he collected as a Soul Grandmaster. 91

Nuoding Academy and Tang San

At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang immediately dismissed Chen Ming’s Level 7 Heavy Armored Earth Dragon martial soul, but showed intense interest in Tang San’s Innate Full Soul Power Blue Silver Grass. He took Tang San away while disregarding Chen Ming and Old Jack. 8

After identifying Tang San as a Twin Martial Soul wielder, Yu Xiaogang used his theoretical knowledge to convince him to become his disciple. Tang San formally kowtowed and accepted him as master. 9 Yu Xiaogang subsequently taught Tang San theoretical knowledge and personally took him to acquire his first spirit ring. 13 91

Attempt to recruit Chen Ming

Yu Xiaogang later approached Chen Ming with an offer of guidance in exchange for protecting Tang San. His real interest was also to examine Chen Ming’s rapid cultivation and find a way beyond his own level 29 limit. Chen Ming rejected him, judging that Yu Xiaogang wanted a useful tool rather than a genuine disciple. 21

The rejection intensified Yu Xiaogang’s resentment. Chen Ming’s talent, theoretical ability, and achievements became a direct challenge to the pride Yu Xiaogang had placed in his own scholarship. 90

Downfall within the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan

Following a breakdown driven by jealousy, Yu Xiaogang damaged his quarters and attempted to direct Luo Sanpao’s attack at the martial soul itself. A subsequent explosion involving Luo Sanpao’s gas and Yu Luomian’s lightning left him injured and publicly humiliated. 90 91

Upon returning to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, Yu Xiaogang falsely implied that he had taught Chen Ming and continued to interfere with others’ cultivation. A clan member’s modified method—attributed to Yu Xiaogang—was found to trade stability for very little efficiency while risking cultivation deviation. 125 126

Yu Yuanzhen ultimately removed Yu Xiaogang from the clan genealogy after his conduct brought repeated disgrace to the family. Yu Xiaogang, severely injured and missing an arm, was later confined in the clan’s Death Prison. 127 129

To save himself from execution, he revealed Tang San’s parentage and proposed using Tang San as bait to lure Tang Hao, hoping the clan could seize Tang Hao’s inherited and hundred-thousand-year soul bones. 129

He initially judges Chen Ming’s dragon martial soul with disdain while treating Tang San’s Innate Full Soul Power as a treasure worth claiming. 8 90 He is particularly proud of his theoretical knowledge, regarding it as the sole remaining proof of his worth after his martial soul and cultivation failed to meet his expectations. 90

His insecurity manifests as jealousy, rage, and an inability to accept criticism. When confronted with Chen Ming’s accomplishments, he lashes out at his surroundings and even at Luo Sanpao. 90 He also resorts to manipulation when threatened, attempting to exploit Tang San’s lineage for his own survival. 129
