Background / History

Before reincarnating in the Douluo World, Tang San was selected by the Asura God as a prospective successor. The Asura God guided him into the world after his death, but later found that Tang San's intended fate had diverged substantially from the original plan and began attempting to restore it through Shrek Academy and its prospective students 185.

In his previous life, Tang San was an outer disciple of the Tang Sect who stole the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record. He developed the Buddha Fury Tang Lotus at twenty-nine and leaped from the cliff at Ghostly Sorrow. His later nightmare concerning the Tang Sect's punishment reflects his fear of retribution rather than events he actually endured before his death 193 318.

Tang San grew up in Holy Soul Village as Tang Hao's son. He was reclusive and arrogant toward the other village children; those who attempted to play with him were often driven away, and he regarded their distance from him with disdain 2.

His childhood was marked by inadequate food and Tang Hao's neglect. He grew up on wild vegetables and thin porridge, leaving him malnourished despite his internal cultivation, and began cooking and managing the household at three. Tang Hao later reveals that Tang San's adult-like behavior and cultivation as an infant had made him uneasy about treating the child as his son 17 220 319.

At his martial soul awakening, Tang San first manifested Blue Silver Grass. He was disgusted by the seemingly common and inferior martial soul, particularly in comparison with Chen Ming's Heavy Armored Earth Dragon 3. Testing revealed that Tang San possessed Innate Full Soul Power, the highest apparent cultivation talent 3. He later disclosed a second martial soul, the Clear Sky Hammer, earning Tang Hao's pride and affection 5.

Before leaving for Nuoding City, Tang San accepted Chen Ming's proposal for a spar. By the time Chen Ming visited the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, Tang San was living there with Yu Xiaogang as his disciple. Yu Xiaogang later revealed Tang San's lineage and proposed using him as bait to lure Tang Hao, whose soul bones were among the intended rewards 128 129.

Tang San's cultivation did not improve alongside the continent's adoption of the Douluo Mental Method because he continued concealing his reliance on the Mysterious Heaven Skill. His apparent stagnation, weak Blue Silver Grass, and use of hidden weapons made him a target for repeated ridicule and beatings within the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan 184.

Yu Xiaogang eventually warned Tang San that the clan intended to use him as bait against Tang Hao, and attempted to flee with him. During their escape, Nightmare Shi Nian trapped both master and disciple in an illusion; Tang San was forced to confront his fear that the Tang Sect would punish him for stealing the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 191 193. Tang Hao intervened, killed Shi Nian, fought the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and escaped with Tang San and Yu Xiaogang after killing Yu Luomian and severely injuring Yu Yuanzhen 193 194.

During the escape, Yu Xiaogang finally informed Tang San that the Clear Sky Hammer was the inherited martial soul of the Clear Sky Sect. Tang San immediately swore to destroy Spirit Hall, believing it responsible for the sect's plight 192. Tang Hao subsequently brought him to the Blue Silver Forest in an attempt to awaken his Blue Silver Grass bloodline, but the Blue Silver Grass and its king rejected Tang San's connection because of his perceived lack of sincerity 195.

Tang San and Yu Xiaogang later took shelter at Shrek Academy. Tang San reached Rank 29 at age twelve and adopted the alias Tang Yin to conceal himself from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan 197 198. During Shrek's admission trial, he and Zhu Zhuqing faced Zhao Wuji; after demonstrating his martial soul and Tang Sect techniques, both were admitted to the academy 199 200 202.

About half a month after his admission, Flender gave Tang San copies of Chen Ming's Iron Hand Technique and Little Perplexing Track Steps. Flender mistook Tang San's existing techniques for advanced versions of those publicly known methods. Tang San regarded the books, the Douluo Mental Method, and Chen Ming's crossbows as copies of Tang Sect knowledge, but his concealed identity prevented him from making a public claim. Tang San later fought repeatedly at Suotuo City's Great Soul Arena. His opponents and fellow Shrek members attributed his conspicuous Mysterious Jade Hand and Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track to Chen Ming's Iron Hand Technique and Little Perplexing Track Steps. Attempts to insist that Chen Ming had copied him damaged Tang San's reputation and caused trouble for Shrek Academy. News of Chen Ming's reforms further intensified Tang San's jealousy 251.

Unbeknownst to Tang San, the Asura God held his cultivation at Rank 29 while arranging resources intended to transform his strength after he reached Rank 30 251. The god then planned for Tang Hao to rescue Bai He and Bai Chenxiang from a Hundred-Thousand-Year Man Faced Demon Spider Emperor, allowing Tang San to gain the Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng and a hundred-thousand-year soul bone before rallying the Clear Sky Sect and entering Slaughter City 253. Chen Ming killed the spider instead and sealed its spirit ring in the Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud. To conceal his interference from the Divine Realm, the Asura God's lower-realm consciousness destroyed itself, leaving those plans and other arranged opportunities disrupted or delayed 259 260.

After news of Tang Chen's return spread across the continent, Tang Hao abruptly took Tang San from Shrek Academy and raced toward the Clear Sky Sect without saying goodbye. During the journey, Tang Hao neglected to shield Tang San with soul power, forcing him to exert his own power while being dragged through the air 304 305.

At the foot of Clear Sky Peak, Tang Hao made Tang San kneel beside him for three days and nights without food, water, or sleep. Tang San became dangerously weak, and an Asura God divine sense was again active within him, silently criticizing Tang Hao's hesitation 317. Tang Chen eventually found them and condemned Tang Hao's submissiveness and refusal to take responsibility. He initially sensed remarkable potential in Tang San, but became disgusted when Tang San reacted with killing intent to learning that his Tang Sect techniques were circulating within the Clear Sky Sect 318.

Tang Chen barred Tang Hao and Tang San from Clear Sky Peak until Tang Hao brought back two Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Bones to atone for taking two inherited sect bones. Tang San remained silent when asked about his father's neglect, while his respect for Tang Hao increasingly gave way to complicated feelings and disgust. Tang Hao then brought him secretly to Heaven Dou City and attacked Chen Ming, intending to pursue Xiao Wu's soul bone and regain the sect's acceptance 319.

The Asura God later explains that the repeated loss of Tang San's intended resources had forced him to release Tang Chen and arrange for the ancestor to serve as Tang San's guardian rather than merely transfer a completed inheritance 321. Following Tang Hao's death, the god controlled a phantom of Tang Hao to address Tang San. The phantom apologized for failing his son, Ah Yin, and the Clear Sky Sect, urged Tang San to live well rather than seek revenge, and claimed to pass on a special power as a legacy. Its touch awakened power within Tang San, brought a blood-red trace into his Clear Sky Hammer, and activated the first of the Asura Nine Trials before Tang San understood either his father's death or the inheritance 323.

By the later Shrek Academy period, Tang San had reached Rank 33. Tang Xiao regarded Shrek's students as too weak and insufficiently developed to compete effectively in the approaching tournament 332. Personality

Tang San is suspicious, cold, and strongly self-centered in his early interactions. He interprets Chen Ming's request for a spar as an attempt to belittle his Blue Silver Grass martial soul, despite no explicit contempt from Chen Ming 7.

He is highly competitive and sensitive to comparisons involving strength, talent, and Xiao Wu. Chen Ming's powerful martial soul, attention from Yu Xiaogang, enrollment at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, and growing bond with Xiao Wu all provoke Tang San's resentment or jealousy 3 8 12 21.

He is also cautious in combat and prepared to defend himself when he perceives danger. When Yu Xiaogang first approached him privately, Tang San misread the situation and prepared to attack 9.

The unusual bone later recovered by Chen Ming combines a torso bone with eight external bones, the Eight Spider Lances, and is sealed away for study rather than reaching Tang San 269.

Nuoding Academy

Tang San enters Nuoding Academy, becomes Yu Xiaogang's disciple, and loses a challenge for Dorm Seven's boss position to Xiao Wu 9 10.

He later obtains his first spirit ring under Yu Xiaogang's guidance and gains Blue Silver Entanglement 13 16 199.

Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan

Tang San later stays at the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan with Yu Xiaogang. His ancestry becomes a potential tool in Yu Xiaogang's plan to lure Tang Hao into danger 128 129.

As the clan's cultivation methods improve, Tang San's relative cultivation speed and combat ability decline. His unawakened Blue Silver Grass, inability to defeat dragon martial souls, and reliance on hidden weapons lead to continual conflicts with clan members 184.

Yu Xiaogang eventually warns Tang San of the clan's plan to use him as bait. Tang Hao rescues Tang San after Shi Nian's nightmare ambush and escapes the clan with both Tang San and Yu Xiaogang, killing Yu Luomian and injuring Yu Yuanzhen in the process 191 193 194.

Shrek Academy

After escaping the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, Tang San travels with Tang Hao and Yu Xiaogang to Suotuo City. He attempts to conceal his identity under the alias Tang Yin and enters Shrek Academy's selection process as a Rank 29 Soul Grandmaster 197 198.

Tang San faces Zhao Wuji alongside Zhu Zhuqing during the final admission test. His Blue Silver Entanglement, conventional hidden weapons, poisoned weapons, and Godly Zhuge Crossbow all fail to overcome Zhao Wuji's defenses, leaving Tang San's confidence in hidden weapons badly shaken; nevertheless, Zhao Wuji accepts him as a Shrek student 199 200 201 202.

Tang San subsequently competes at Suotuo City's Great Soul Arena, winning battles through Tang Sect techniques while remaining at Rank 29. The Asura God secretly prevents his breakthrough as part of a plan to provide him with resources and a sudden increase in strength at Rank 30 251.

The Asura God attempts to direct a Hundred-Thousand-Year Man Faced Demon Spider Emperor toward events that would benefit Tang San, but Chen Ming kills the beast before Tang San can obtain its intended rewards. The Asura God's lower-realm consciousness then destroys itself to hide its involvement, disrupting its arrangements for Tang San 253 259 260.

In the later Shrek period, Tang San reaches Rank 33, placing him below Rank 39 Dai Mubai but above Rank 32 Oscar and Rank 31 Ma Hongjun. Tang Xiao considers all four insufficiently developed and doubts that the existing team can compete effectively in the upcoming tournament. Zhu Zhuqing's early departure also leaves Shrek without her contribution 332.

Yu Xiaogang has Tang San and the remaining students carry heavy stone baskets while running laps, presenting the exercise as an ancient secret and promising medicinal baths afterward. Tang San questions its usefulness. The narration instead identifies the exercise as an old survival and escape practice, contrasting Yu Xiaogang's reliance on inherited methods with Chen Ming's experimental cultivation research 343.

Tang Xiao eventually supplies two young Soul Elders from the Breaking and Defense Clans to reinforce Shrek's team. He then seeks to seize Blue Tyrant Academy's tournament qualification, but the outcome of that attempt is not established at this stage 348.

Clear Sky Sect Reunion

News of Tang Chen's public return gives Tang Hao renewed hope of obtaining support. He takes Tang San from Shrek without warning and rushes to the Clear Sky Sect, neglecting Tang San's protection during the journey 304 305.

Rather than entering the sect directly, Tang Hao kneels with Tang San below Clear Sky Peak for three days and nights. Tang San grows dangerously weak, prompting an active Asura divine sense to criticize Tang Hao's indecision 317.

Tang Chen discovers the pair and rejects Tang Hao's appeals, condemning his cowardice and lack of responsibility. His initial interest in Tang San collapses when Tang San's killing intent over the spread of Tang Sect secrets reveals that the circulating techniques were not his own creations 318.

Tang Chen sets the recovery of two Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Bones as Tang Hao's condition for atonement and bars both father and son from Clear Sky Peak until it is met. Tang Hao interprets the condition as hope of forgiveness and takes Tang San to Heaven Dou City before launching an attack on Chen Ming in pursuit of revenge and Xiao Wu's soul bone 319.

Asura Inheritance

Tang Chen's return changes the Asura God's succession arrangements. Chen Ming assesses that Tang San can no longer simply receive Tang Chen's completed trials as in the original storyline and would instead need to undertake the divine trials himself, substantially slowing his route to godhood 303.
