Origins and System

Human Spirit Masters began with the first awakening of Martial Souls and the first deliberate absorption of Spirit Rings. An Angel God relic records the earliest awakening and cultivation methods, as well as ten Spirit Master realms ranging from Spirit Scholar to Titled Douluo. 69 78

The foundational cultivation method recorded by the Angel God remains about 90% identical to modern Spirit Master practice after ten thousand years, with only minor refinements. 69

Martial Soul Awakening

Martial Soul Hall branches dispatch Awakening Spirit Masters to villages under the authority of the Martial Soul Sacred Hall. An Awakening Spirit Master arranges Awakening Stones into a six-pointed formation and channels Soul Power through them to awaken children one at a time. 2

An awakened Martial Soul determines much of a Spirit Master's natural physique, combat inclination, and compatibility with future Spirit Rings. Beast Martial Souls commonly strengthen the body even without Martial Soul Possession, while Tool Martial Souls follow different development paths and ring requirements. 84 92

Martial Soul Possession

Beast Martial Soul users can enter Martial Soul Possession, taking on physical traits associated with their Martial Soul. Chen Ming's original possession produced scales, claws, a dragon tail, horns, and reptilian pupils, while earth-attributed energy formed armor-like protection around him. 5

Tool and Beast Martial Souls are not strictly fixed in every case. Chen Ming's Beast Soul Tool-ification can switch his Sacred Earth Dragon into a dragon-patterned staff form with no visible beast-like traits, an unprecedented state in the known Spirit Master world. 101 102

Spirit Rings and Spirit Skills

Spirit Masters seek Spirit Beast rings compatible with their Martial Souls. During absorption, a ring's bloodline power and abilities merge with the user's Martial Soul to form a Spirit Skill. 17 18

The resulting skill is not completely predetermined. Even Spirit Masters with the same Martial Soul absorbing rings from the same species usually receive only broadly similar skills; personal traits, experiences, and extreme emotions can alter the result. 18

• Great clans can use extensive records and repeated trials to stabilize Spirit Skill acquisition, but this is generally reliable only for the first three Spirit Rings. 18
• Higher-age Spirit Rings become increasingly difficult to control because a Spirit Master's own tendencies have greater influence on the resulting skill. 18
• Ten-thousand-year Spirit Rings contain lingering mental resentment from the Spirit Beast, creating a potentially lethal shock to the absorber's spirit. 153
• Ring compatibility matters: a ring suited to one attribute or Martial Soul type may be inefficient—or harmful—for another. 87 92

Cultivation Methods

More than 90% of Spirit Masters cultivate through variations of a basic Meditation Method. The traditional method is simple and generally does not incorporate meridian circulation into cultivation. 4

Chen Ming considered these conventional methods crude and developed the Douluo Mental Method, a meridian-centered system that gathers and circulates Soul Power for cultivation. Its earliest form already surpassed traditional Meditation Methods in efficiency. 76

Organizations and Education

Martial Soul Hall is the largest organization in the Spirit Master world and provides awakening services, advancement paths, resources, and guidance to promising recruits. 4

Its Sacred Halls oversee the branches of each empire, while a Platinum Bishop with Soul Douluo-level strength manages affairs across a region. 2

Martial Soul Hall also maintains Spirit Master identity tokens and household registration records, tracking the Martial Souls, levels, and benefit claims of most low-level Spirit Masters. 91
