Background / History

Family and Childhood

Onizuka was born an illegitimate child of the Onizuka family, a major Japanese conglomerate with roots in the Sengoku period. Its rigid hierarchy privileged legitimate heirs and treated illegitimate children as tools of the main family. His exceptional intelligence made the legitimate heirs uncomfortable rather than earning their recognition 1.

When he was five, his family was sent to a remote island. His parents blamed him for their exile and withheld affection and support. For nearly ten years, he survived through his own ingenuity and determination. An invitation to Advanced Nurturing High School offered him a temporary escape from that environment 1.

Enrollment and Early Point-Earning

Assigned to Class 1-D, Onizuka quickly questioned the school's apparently generous treatment of its students. He pressed Chabashira about what she was authorized to disclose and inferred that classroom misconduct and academic failure would carry serious consequences. Having already studied university-level material in middle school, he left lessons to pursue opportunities to earn points 2 4 5.

He began challenging upperclassmen to athletic wagers, using Class D's poor reputation to encourage them to underestimate him. His first documented race ended in a 9.92-second victory over Yamada Naoki. He paid Yamada to keep quiet and continued winning wagers until potential opponents began avoiding him. Returning to class, he explained his absence as a cold 6.

Onizuka also investigated Sakayanagi Arisu and deliberately arranged their early meeting. After defeating Koenji, his account reached 1,893,267 points, and he approached Hoshinomiya through Ichinose to investigate the possibility of transferring classes 8 11.

Exam Papers and the Sudō Complaint

Before the midterms, Onizuka bought past exam papers from Hondo, an upperclassman he had previously defeated in a long-jump wager. He resold the papers to Ryuen for 50,000 points and sought payment before sharing them with Class D 14 15.

When three students provoked Sudō into fighting in a building without security cameras, Onizuka followed and recorded the confrontation rather than intervening. He used the footage to pressure Ryuen into accepting monthly payments from Class C. After the complaint against Sudō was withdrawn, Onizuka falsely claimed that he had bought the recording for 80,000 points; classmates reimbursed him a little over 50,000 points 20 34 35.

During the same period, he became involved with Sakura Airi. He protected her from a harassing clerk, secured video evidence, and arranged for school security to take the man away. Manabu subsequently invited him to the Student Council, but he declined 31.

Uninhabited Island Exam

Before the island exam, Ayanokoji confronted Onizuka over the danger his independent actions posed to Class D. Their fight ended without either forcing the other to concede, and Onizuka made no firm promise to cooperate 40.

On the island, Onizuka negotiated a truce among Classes B, C, and D and coordinated an attack on Class A. His agreement protected the participating classes' leader identities while securing monthly payments from Class C. He also confronted Chabashira over a suspected attempt to bypass his arrangement, demanding that she accept leader reports only from him and presenting a disguised microcamera as leverage 48 49 50 53.

His cooperation with Class B nevertheless included betraying his own class: he disclosed his identity and a contractual loophole, leaving Class B to decide whether to exploit them. Ichinose later credited him with helping identify the leaders of Classes A and D, and Class B agreed to compensate him through monthly payments 57 58.

VIP Exam and Class A Cooperation

With Class B only one Class Point behind Class A, Sakayanagi sought Onizuka's assistance through Kamuro. He accepted a paid arrangement and received temporary command over Class A's students during the VIP Exam 60 65.

Onizuka inspected their school emails, gathered academic rankings, and solved the pattern behind the VIP selections. He then gave Kamuro a list of all twelve VIPs and instructed Class A to wait for his signal before acting. Class A finished the exam with a 300-Class-Point gain, while Classes C and D each lost 150 65 71 72 74.

Reshaping Class D

After a water-park incident, Onizuka defeated Sudō, Sotomura, and Yamauchi and threatened to report the boys' actions to Manabu. He presented contracts granting him absolute control over them on one occasion, with expulsion threatened for a breach. Ike signed immediately 82 83.

Onizuka later recruited Horikita into a broader plan to unite Class D through compulsory contracts. Although he was approaching the funds needed to transfer classes, he considered staying if Class D demonstrated sufficient potential. Horikita agreed to help him pursue Class A 97.

During Paper-Shuffle, he negotiated reciprocal targeting between Classes B and D while seeking an outcome that would cost Class C 100 Class Points. He also persuaded Ichinose to provide restricted exam access to protect four students from expulsion, though she refused his later request to extend access to Miyake and Shinohara 101 116 120.

After discovering classmates copying files from his computer, Onizuka knocked Sudō unconscious and eventually told Yamauchi that he was dropping out. He later admitted attacking Yamauchi, exposing his involvement in the circumstances behind Yamauchi's expulsion. Hirata repeatedly attacked him for over an hour before collapsing from exhaustion. Despite their disagreement over how Class D should change, Hirata subsequently joined Onizuka's faction 106 126 128.

Opposition to Nagumo

Manabu repeatedly sought Onizuka's help against Miyabi Nagumo's planned reforms. Onizuka initially refused another Student Council invitation, but accepted Manabu's wager after concluding that Manabu hoped to protect Suzune and her close classmates 84.

He later formed a partnership with Sakayanagi concerning a likely threat from within the school itself. They deliberately avoided a binding contract. He also recruited Kiriyama into an explicit strategic alliance to bring down Nagumo 100 124 125.
