Background / History
Ging grew up on Whale Island with his cousin and childhood friend, Mito. His father disappeared at sea while fishing; Ging's own curiosity about the outside world led him to seek information about Hunters and enter the Hunter Exam. Before leaving, he had already explored Whale Island's mountains and caught dangerous creatures such as the “Swamp King.” 110 114
During the Hunter Exam, Ging initially relied on observation and theft rather than direct challenges, acquiring qualification passes while avoiding attention. When targeted on the 18th floor, he defeated five consecutive examinees despite his limited combat experience. 118
He deliberately arranged repeated attempts to steal badges from a Nen-using staff member so he could experience Nen firsthand. During the third attempt, he awakened Nen, rapidly formed Ten, and passed the exam. 120
Ging later partnered with Russell during the sign-in competition, defeated Baal for a sign-in point, and negotiated with Floor Master Diana for the locations of every sign-in point. His team became one of the leading groups in the examination. 126 127 In the Basen Rainforest challenge, he obtained a Wood Elemental core and befriended a Nen-awakened woodpecker after teaching it Zetsu. 143
He became a member of the team developing Greed Island. After the emergence of Dungeon Secret Realms threatened their project, Ging proposed building Greed Island while learning the necessary skills and later chose to merge it into the Secret Realm system rather than sell it as a conventional game. 187 214 215
Once Greed Island began operating smoothly, Ging disappeared without informing the other planners. He continued investigating ancient ruins, Secret Realms, and routes toward the Dark Continent. 236 423 424
Personality
Ging is driven primarily by curiosity. He became a Hunter because the license made it easier to enter places he wanted to explore, and he values pursuing the truth behind whatever lies ahead more than fame, wealth, or even his own safety. 110 428
He is highly independent and can appear indifferent toward companions and family. He vanished after Greed Island stabilized, used the project’s planners as a shortcut when convenient, and initially did not reveal himself when near Gon. 236 423 425
Despite his carefree manner, Ging is observant, inventive, and persistent. He turns limited information into workable strategies, tests unfamiliar phenomena directly, and resists intimidation even when faced with Lu Qi’s overwhelming presence. 120 190 214
