Netero had become bored after reaching a level where even powerful Nen users could not resist his Hundred-Type Guanyin. The rare spatial abilities of Lu Qi's Nen Beast Phoenix finally gave him an opponent worth pursuing, even if he regarded their first contest as play rather than a true fight. 21

At the Heavenly Arena, Netero accepted Lu Qi as his disciple and tested him through a ball-grabbing game. He subsequently trained Lu Qi in combat, body structure, meridians, and martial knowledge accumulated during his own career. 20 21

Lu Qi's Six Styles gave Netero a new direction for his own development. Rather than merely improving external Nen output and techniques, Netero began investigating internal body cultivation through Iron Body, Zetsu, and controlled Nen circulation. 54 55
