Background / History

Gu Yuan was born in the slums of Las City and lost both his parents. His grandfather raised him until dying of illness, leaving him savings and urging him to become a blacksmith’s apprentice. Gu Yuan instead sold their home and used the money to pay for a black-market Martial Soul awakening at age ten. His initial Martial Soul was the ice-attribute Ice Snake, with only level 1 soul power. 1

After leaving the city, Gu Yuan activated the Treasure Exchange System and exchanged his Ice Snake Martial Soul for the remnant soul of the Ice Dragon King. The exchange raised him to level 10 and brought the Ice Dragon King into his Spirit Sea. Their relationship evolved from wary partners into a mother-and-son bond after she bestowed major portions of her power upon him. 1 2 3

Under the Ice Dragon King’s guidance, Gu Yuan travelled to the Far North to pursue soul rings and establish a path to godhood. There he met the Snow Empress, who agreed to support the plan to collect faith from ice-attribute soul beasts and elevate Gu Yuan as the new Ice God. He established authority among the Far North’s soul beasts through his Ice God aura and overwhelming Ultimate Ice. 16 17

Gu Yuan later enrolled at Shrek Academy at level 46, openly intending to use the institution as part of his eventual plan to seize Shrek and unify the continent. His talent rapidly earned him a place in the Outer Court Elite Class, promotion to the Inner Court, and designation as the next Sea God Pavilion Master’s successor. 6 47 121

During the Holy Spirit Cult’s assault on Shrek, Gu Yuan abandoned his initial intention to remain a bystander after seeing students and teachers being massacred. He evacuated students with Zhang Lexuan, exterminated large numbers of Evil Soul Masters, and unleashed Descent of the Ice God to help avert Shrek’s destruction. The surviving academy leadership consequently regarded him as Shrek’s indispensable hope and accepted his claim of having received an Ice God trial. 110 112

While maintaining the appearance of Shrek’s heroic successor, Gu Yuan aided Zhang Lexuan’s revenge against Mu En and returned to the academy after Mu En’s death. He gave Zhang Lexuan Mu En’s soul bones and an immortal herb to accelerate her advancement, while revealing to her his broader ambition to remake the cultivation system and create a new world. 117

After returning to the Far North, Gu Yuan deepened his bond with the Snow Empress and helped the One-Horned Ice Dragon Python ascend to the God Realm, enabling Zhang Lexuan to advance further. During the tournament journey, Gu Yuan saved the group from the Death God Envoy and later used the assassination attempt by the Netherworld Douluo as an opportunity to eliminate Sea God Pavilion elder Lin Huiqun. He escaped the ensuing Class 9 fixed-installation Soul Tool bombardment after using Lin Huiqun as bait. 187 193 194

Gu Yuan is ambitious, self-reliant, and highly pragmatic. As a child, he rejected a Soul Master’s offer of guidance rather than abandon his own plans; later, he deliberately joined Shrek while intending to absorb its influence and eventually control it. 1 6 47

He is confident in his strength and often calm under pressure, but his pursuit of power can be ruthless. He kills mercenaries without leaving survivors, exploits the Treasure Exchange System despite the harm its exchanges inflict on others, and privately considers eliminating Xuanzi once he becomes strong enough. 15 22 121

Despite this ruthlessness, Gu Yuan is protective of people and soul beasts he regards as his own. He freed captured Far North natives, protects his companions, seeks cultivation opportunities for allies, and remembers the preferential treatment Xuanzi grants him. 15 84 131

Gu Yuan is also patient and calculating in factional struggles. He preserved Xian Lin'er during the Holy Spirit Cult attack because she could remain useful in controlling Shrek’s Spirit Guidance Department, but intended to dispose of her if she later became an obstacle.
