Background / History

Tang San was among the Shrek Seven Devils in the God Realm. He took an interest in Huo Yuhao and intended to make him his son-in-law, arranging for Ning Rongrong to test Huo in the Valley of Asking Love 9.

After drinking the Masticated Wine, Tang San lost his divine position and cultivation and found himself inhabiting the body of Tang Ya, the Tang Sect Master. He initially struggled to accept the loss of his power, Xiao Wu, and divine throne, but resolved to cultivate again and retaliate against the God of Destruction 9 10.

Unable to access the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well or the Clear Sky Sect, Tang San took leave from Shrek Academy with Beibei and traveled to the Star Luo Empire. There, he encountered Huo Yuhao after the boy fled the Dai family and began cultivating a connection with him through their shared desire for revenge 25 26.

While waiting for Huo Yuhao, Tang San reconstructed the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record’s cultivation methods and used Dark Blue Silver Grass to consume the life force of vegetation. He intended to exploit the Child of Destiny’s opportunities to recover his former strength and eventually exceed it 10 26.

Tang San and Xiao Wu, reincarnated as Tang Ya and Jiang Nannan respectively, eventually recognized one another. They concluded that the God of Destruction had sabotaged and cast them into the lower realm, and decided that the Child of Destiny was central to their return to the God Realm 48.

Following Tang San’s later defeat by Gu Yuan’s companions, Gu Yuan uses Electrolux to inspect his memories. The memories portray Tang San as a former Tang Sect Outer Sect disciple who stole the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, arrived on Douluo Continent through possession, rose from Shrek student to Sea God and Asura God, and repeatedly exploited both allies and the continent to consolidate his power 165.

Appearance

While inhabiting Tang Ya’s body, Tang San presents as a young girl and is publicly known as Tang Ya. His transformed martial soul manifests as pitch-black Blue Silver Grass 44.

  • Uses Tang Ya’s identity to conceal his original identity.
  • Possesses a visibly dark, mutated Blue Silver Grass martial soul 44.
  • Temporarily regains his male voice and Sea God Tang San appearance during the later God Realm transformation events 94 95.
  • Subsequently returns to presenting as Tang Ya, including during his reserve-team introduction and his dealings with the Holy Spirit Cult 180 192.

Personality

Tang San is ambitious, calculating, and deeply unwilling to accept the loss of his former divine status. His desire to return to godhood drives him to seek Huo Yuhao’s opportunities for himself, including potential soul-beast sacrifices 31 91.

He is skilled at maintaining the Tang Ya persona and manipulating the trust and affection of Beibei and Huo Yuhao. However, repeated defeats and setbacks—particularly against Gu Yuan—leave him frustrated, jealous, and emotionally unstable 31 46 54 80.

His Dark Blue Silver Grass also worsens his impulses and violent urges, a condition he attempts to manage while continuing his cultivation 57 87 88.

Tang San’s resentment grows as Gu Yuan and Gu Yuan’s companions surpass him. He reacts to humiliation with paranoia, lashes out violently at perceived rivals, and becomes increasingly willing to cooperate with Evil Soul Masters to obtain the power needed to kill Gu Yuan 164 171 184 192.

Abilities & Skills

Dark Blue Silver Grass

Tang San’s mutated Blue Silver Grass martial soul is pitch-black and possesses devouring properties.

  • Drains an opponent’s soul power through its vines 45.
  • Can consume the life force of plants, soul beasts, and Soul Masters to accelerate his cultivation 26 33 192.
  • Its dark nature conflicts dangerously with light-attribute power 57 68.
  • Its influence aggravates Tang San’s emotional instability, violent impulses, and craving for slaughter 87 91.
  • Its devouring abilities are strong enough to cause others to regard him as having effectively become an Evil Soul Master 192.

Soul Skills

At Level 42, Tang San possesses four soul rings: two yellow and two purple 44.

  • First Soul Skill: Entanglement — Restrains targets with Dark Blue Silver Grass vines 45.
  • Third Soul Skill: Spider Web Restraint — Produces an expanding black web capable of enveloping an opponent. Its devouring effect drains the soul power of trapped targets 33 45.
  • Fifth Soul Skill: Blue Silver Overlord Spear — A 25,000-year fifth-ring skill that manifests a powerful dark spear. After striking an opponent, it can devour blood and Soul Power to continually grow stronger 169.
  • His third and fourth rings originate from a Poison Spider and Crypt Demon Spider, respectively 33.

Tang Sect Techniques

Tang San retains the complete Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record from his past life and continues cultivating its methods after reincarnation.

  • Mysterious Heaven Skill — Uses its balanced nature to circulate otherwise conflicting attributes, including light-attribute soul power from his right arm bone 26 54.
  • Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon — Uses force-redirection techniques in combat 30 180.
  • Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track — A movement technique used to rapidly close distance and evade attacks 169.
  • Purple Demon Eye — Enhances his perception and vision 169 192.
  • Can manually cast weakened versions of Tang Sect-derived Blue Silver Grass techniques, including Blue Silver Thorn Formation, Spider Web Restraint, Blue Silver Cage, and Blue Silver Overlord Spear without activating soul rings 30.

Light Demon-Breaking Right Arm Bone

A light-attribute right arm bone fused with Tang San’s body after Gu Yuan suppressed the resulting backlash.

  • Allows him to channel light-attribute soul power through his right arm 57 68.
  • Causes intense burning pain because the light attribute is incompatible with Dark Blue Silver Grass 68.
  • Its absorption initially triggered a severe Holy Light backlash 57.
  • Occupies one of his six soul-bone slots, alongside the five Secret Technique Soul Bones later implanted by Gu Yuan 165.

Secret Technique Soul Bones

Gu Yuan secretly installs five Secret Technique Soul Bones into Tang San while he is unconscious.

  • The bones have no displayed active or passive combat skills beyond increasing Soul Power by five percent each 165.
  • They cannot be readily sensed in the manner of ordinary soul bones 165.
  • Together with the Light Demon-Breaking Right Arm Bone, they fill every soul-bone slot in Tang San’s body and obstruct any future attempt to fuse an ordinary soul bone 165.

Martial Soul Fusion Compatibility

Tang San and Huo Yuhao possess exceptionally high martial-soul compatibility.

  • Can begin forming a Martial Soul Fusion Skill through palm-to-palm cultivation 68.
  • Lets Tang San share cultivation speed and draw upon the Child of Destiny’s luck 68.
  • Becomes a means for Tang San to influence and control Huo Yuhao 68.
  • Their Martial Soul Fusion Skill is sufficiently effective to secure Huo Yuhao a place on Shrek’s reserve team 176.

Equipment / Items

  • Light Demon-Breaking Right Arm Bone / Ultimate Light Soul Bone — Light-attribute right arm soul bone fused with Gu Yuan’s assistance 57 58 68.
  • Five Secret Technique Soul Bones — Secretly implanted by Gu Yuan to fill Tang San’s remaining soul-bone slots 165.
  • God Realm Central Key / Octagonal Golden Key — Handed to the God of Destruction during the later God Realm events 96 127.

Relationships

  • Xiao Wu / Jiang Nannan — His wife from his past life; they recognize each other after both are reincarnated and initially work toward returning to the God Realm 48. Their relationship later deteriorates severely after Xiao Wu confronts Tang San over his conduct toward Beibei and Huo Yuhao, accepts Xu Sanshi’s confession, and renounces their former “Tang San and Xiao Wu” relationship 171 179.
  • Beibei — Tang San’s devoted companion while he poses as Tang Ya; Beibei repeatedly protects and cares for him, initially unaware of Tang San’s true identity and manipulation 10 31 54. Their relationship becomes intimate and deeply conflicted, with Tang San repeatedly relying on Beibei to relieve the Dark Blue Silver Grass’s effects; they have a child, Tang Wuluan 87 88 171.
  • Tang Wuluan — Tang San’s child with Beibei, born while Tang San inhabits Tang Ya’s body 165 171.
  • Huo Yuhao — The Child of Destiny. Tang San initially wants him as a son-in-law, then seeks to use his luck, cultivation opportunities, and soul-beast sacrifices to regain godhood 9 68 91. Their high martial-soul compatibility lets them form a fusion skill, while Huo Yuhao develops feelings for Tang Ya and remains unaware that Tang San intends to seize his future opportunities 68 176.
  • Gu Yuan — A far stronger Shrek student and Tang San’s major source of jealousy. Gu Yuan defeats him in the Elite Class assessment and later saves his life during the Holy Light backlash 46 57 80. Gu Yuan’s companions later severely defeat Tang San, after which Gu Yuan investigates his memories and secretly fills his soul-bone slots with Secret Technique Soul Bones 164 165.

  • Xu Sanshi — Tang San is uncomfortable with Xu Sanshi’s behavior toward Jiang Nannan and is later prevented by him from attacking Beibei 48 59. After Xu Sanshi becomes involved with Xiao Wu, Tang San attacks him with the Blue Silver Overlord Spear and severely crushes his lower body 169 171.
  • Netherworld Douluo — A Holy Spirit Cult member who approaches Tang San through spiritual transmission, offers him power and assistance in killing Gu Yuan, and recruits him into a plan to feign capture and lure Gu Yuan into an ambush 192.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Fall from Godhood

Tang San loses his divine office and cultivation after the Masticated Wine takes effect, becoming trapped in Tang Ya’s body. This loss establishes his overriding objective: recover his strength and return to the God Realm 9 10.

Pursuit of Huo Yuhao

After leaving Shrek with Beibei, Tang San finds Huo Yuhao and draws him into the Tang Sect. He unsuccessfully attempts to seize the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm’s sacrifice and later focuses on exploiting Huo Yuhao’s destiny for his own advancement 26 31 33 91.

Tang San subsequently uses his light-attribute right arm bone to initiate martial-soul resonance with Huo Yuhao. Their resulting compatibility allows him to share Huo Yuhao’s cultivation and luck while binding the Child of Destiny more tightly to his plans 68 176.

Elite Class Assessment

As Tang Ya, Tang San serves as an examiner for Shrek’s Outer Court Elite Class. He easily defeats Dai Huabin, but Gu Yuan overwhelms him by freezing much of the Spirit Fighting Arena with the Ice Dragon King martial soul 45 46.

Reunion with Xiao Wu

Tang San reunites with Xiao Wu in her Jiang Nannan identity. Their recognition confirms that they were cast down from the God Realm and leads them to center their plans on the Child of Destiny 48.

Return to the God Realm

Tang Ya and Jiang Nannan awaken in the bodies of Sea God Tang San and Xiao Wu. With the God of Destruction’s intervention, they regain their original appearances and pursue the ascension of their families to the God Realm 95 96 127.

This restoration does not remain stable. By the time Shrek’s reserve team is assembled, Tang San is again publicly operating as Tang Ya, with Level 54 Spirit King cultivation rather than his former divine power 176 180.

Exposure and Soul-Bone Restriction

During a confrontation with Gu Yuan’s group, Tang San is overwhelmed by Wu Feng, Wang Dong’er, Zhu Zhuqing, and Xiao Xiao, then retrieved unconscious by Gu Yuan 164.

Gu Yuan examines Tang San’s memories through Electrolux and learns of his past actions. To restrict him, Gu Yuan fuses five Secret Technique Soul Bones into Tang San, ensuring that all six of his soul-bone slots are occupied 165.

Reserve Team and Tournament Decline

Tang San enters Shrek’s reserve team as Tang Ya and reveals Level 54 Spirit King cultivation. Despite his advancement, he is repeatedly defeated during Gu Yuan’s training and becomes increasingly marginalized by the other team members 176 180 184.

During the All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Academy Spirit Fighting Tournament, Gu Yuan excludes Tang San and Huo Yuhao from the final lineup. Tang San is furious at being denied the opportunity for recognition, while Shrek wins the tournament without his meaningful participation 188 191.

Holy Spirit Cult Plot

After the tournament, Tang San is disappointed by the soul bone he receives and is approached by Netherworld Douluo of the Holy Spirit Cult. Upon learning that his clandestine devouring activities have been discovered, Tang San agrees to a scheme in which he will feign capture and lure Gu Yuan into a Holy Spirit Cult ambush 192.

Trivia

  • Tang San’s name announcement as Tang Ya is described as awkward during the Elite Class assessment 44.
  • He considers his current-life soul rings disappointingly inferior to those he possessed in his past life 33.

  • Tang San visibly grits his teeth when introducing himself as “Tang Ya” before Gu Yuan and the reserve team 180.
  • Despite his fixation on acquiring stronger soul bones, Gu Yuan’s secret intervention leaves every one of Tang San’s soul-bone slots occupied 165.
