Background / History

Childhood and Life at the Sect

Ning Rongrong grows up pampered by Ning Fengzhi and Yun Qin. Her mother worries that excessive indulgence has left her spoiled and without friends, while her father believes her kindness will guide her. When Rongrong sees Lin Ying being beaten in the street, she asks her family to intervene. Ning Fengzhi takes the girl into the sect, and Rongrong eagerly asks to play and cultivate with her 241.

Her family’s protection does not prevent a covert attack by Qian Renxue’s followers. After secretly going shopping, Rongrong develops severe itching from a poison that threatens her appearance but not her life or cultivation talent. Yun Qin comforts her, while Ning Fengzhi suppresses news of the incident and seeks Dugu Bo’s assistance 139.

Leaving Home and Joining Shrek

Rongrong leaves Heaven Dou City with Lin Ying, hoping to escape her father’s restrictions. Ning Fengzhi has already anticipated her plans and instructed Lin Ying to protect her and ensure she enrolls at Shrek. Seeing Dai Mubai’s behavior with two women nearly makes Rongrong abandon the academy, but she eventually takes its entrance test 185 171.

At Shrek, she serves as a support fighter and a source of information about rival academies. She warns her teammates that Shrek lacks the qualifications to enter the Advanced Soul Master Elite Tournament independently and that the leading teams greatly exceed their strength 31 108 145.

Tang San’s medicinal herbs help raise her soul power, but their consequences alarm her family. Sword Douluo discovers that previously retained medicinal potency has disappeared from her body; Ning Fengzhi suspects Tang San’s herb and secretly blacklists him. Shangguan Li later identifies the herbs given to Shrek’s students as inferior substances that damage their potential and lifespan 84 129 182.

Romance and Engagement Negotiations

Rongrong confesses to Tang San and asks him to consider her as an ordinary girl rather than the sect’s heir. They begin a romantic relationship, although Tang San asks to keep it secret. His private calculations remain focused on the influence attached to her name 19 66 82.

When Tang Hao formally seeks an engagement, Rongrong enthusiastically supports the marriage and rejects Ning Fengzhi’s demand that Tang San marry into the Ning household 89.

The negotiations impose several safeguards and succession requirements:

Negotiation Conditions
Ning Fengzhi’s three conditions Tang San must possess Titled Douluo-level strength before twenty-five, obtain a 100,000-year soul ring and soul bone for Rongrong, and give any child inheriting the pagoda Martial Soul the Ning surname 129.
Later high-stakes negotiations Tang San must reach Titled Douluo strength within ten years; their children must bear the Ning surname, and the marriage must satisfy the sect’s succession needs 198.

Rongrong responds by proposing a wager: her father should conceal her heirship and temporarily appoint another young master. If Tang San still wants her, Ning Fengzhi must permit the marriage; otherwise, she will abandon Tang San and remain with the sect 198.

Possession and the Struggle for Her Body

After losing her original body, Li Pei receives the Rakshasa God’s encouragement to seize Rongrong, who is already engaged to Tang San. Rongrong initially reacts to Li Pei’s reported death with concern, offering to have Sword Douluo avenge her despite disliking her 133.

The possession does not erase Rongrong’s consciousness. Protected by the Rakshasa God, she watches Li Pei use her body and absorb her life’s privileges. As a displaced soul, Rongrong witnesses Li Pei’s intimate meeting with Tang San and recognizes that his apparent concern is partly a performance for the hidden Sword Douluo. She also begins questioning Lin Ying’s loyalty 13 80.

By secretly absorbing Rakshasa divine power, Rongrong eventually retakes control. The victory is not permanent: she and Li Pei continue struggling, with control repeatedly changing hands over the following six months 13 174. Li Pei later exploits Rongrong’s resentment toward Xiao Wu to take over again, leaving Tang San unaware that another soul controls his fiancée 205.

Xiao Wu’s Sacrifice and Divine Intervention

Rongrong accompanies Tang San and Lin Ying into the Star Dou Great Forest during Spirit Hall’s hunt for Xiao Wu. She presents Tang San as a retainer to conceal his identity and denies finding Xiao Wu when questioned by Spirit Hall’s search party 104 160.

Xiao Wu chooses Rongrong as the intended recipient of her sacrifice because her twin Martial Souls and divine inheritance could give her the power to oppose Tang San and Tang Hao. The sacrifice subsequently occurs, but Gu Yuena considers Rongrong to have betrayed the trust behind it 117 166 158.

Rongrong also becomes involved with the Nine-Colored Goddess, whom she identifies as the sect’s ancestor and first sect master. She hopes this intervention can help her father, whose nighttime behavior has become unsettling. After the meeting costs her the Rakshasa God’s power, she grows resentful toward Ning Fengzhi; Tang San encourages that resentment while seeking the sect’s secrets 100 146 230.

Death and Aftermath

Gu Yuena confronts Rongrong over Xiao Wu’s sacrifice. Rongrong blames Spirit Hall and begs Tang San and her family to save her, but Gu Yuena kills her with the Silver Dragon Spear 158.

Shangguan Li finds Rongrong’s soul fused with Li Pei’s and purifies their resentment using Undead Magic, intending to give them a chance at reincarnation. Instead, the purified souls pursue her, seeking resurrection and intending harm. Little Pear intervenes and shatters them 158.

Ning Fengzhi continues believing Rongrong is alive and undergoing a divine trial. Tang San publicly promises to find his fiancée while privately coveting her divine position. Lin Ying, who knows Rongrong is dead, escapes the sect and returns to Spirit Hall 217.

Original-Work Crossover Extras

In the crossover-extra storyline, Rongrong competes with Shrek under the identity of Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s second team. Her Nine Treasures pagoda evolution strengthens Ning Fengzhi’s approval of Tang San as a prospective son-in-law, while her romantic interest creates tension with Xiao Wu 178.

During the tournament final, Rongrong participates in Yu Xiaogang’s multi-person Martial Soul Fusion formation. Spirit Hall knocks her out of the red mist, removing the team’s support, but Bibi Dong’s order to spare her ensures she survives unharmed 159.

A later extra depicts Tang San approaching her under the name Tang Yin as part of a plan to infiltrate and destroy the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 46.

Appearance

  • Described as having a “pure” appearance and considerable beauty; she considers Shangguan Li the first person she has met who is prettier than herself 185 241.
  • Her poisoning causes intense itching and threatens her appearance, although the healer finds no danger to her life or talent 139.

Personality

Rongrong is lively, indulgent, and fond of shopping and outings. Her compassion is genuine: she intervenes for Lin Ying and treats her as a friend and sister rather than a servant. She strongly dislikes Dai Mubai’s womanizing behavior, even though he is good-looking 13 185 241.

Her intelligence is often obscured by romantic attachment. Educated within the sect, she can recognize calculated behavior, devise a test of Tang San’s sincerity, and maintain a cover story under scrutiny. Nevertheless, Tang San repeatedly redirects her trust toward himself and away from her father 80 104 117 198.

Her feelings toward Tang San change sharply. She moves between devotion, suspicion, and hostility; at one point she tells Xiao Wu that she is only pretending to like him because she dislikes his interest in her background. These changes occur alongside the continuing struggle with Li Pei and outside interference with her body 117 174 207.

Abilities & Skills

Seven Treasures Glazed Tile Pagoda

Her hereditary Martial Soul provides support rather than direct offense 106 217.

  • Amplifies allies in battle, including Li Pei against Zhu Zhuyun 31.
  • Cannot erase every power gap: Li Pei still fails against an opponent a full major rank stronger 31.
  • Normally limits its wielder to the Spirit Saint realm and seven soul rings 13.
  • In the crossover extras, its evolved form participates in a multi-person Martial Soul Fusion Skill that consumes Rongrong’s soul power heavily 159.

Innate Treasure Appraisal

The pagoda possesses an innate ability to distinguish an item’s value 259.

  • Rongrong uses it to purchase valuable ores cheaply for Tang San 259.
  • She identifies the ability as specific to her Martial Soul, not a trick Tang San can simply learn 259.

Twin Martial Souls

Li Pei’s fusion with Rongrong’s body adds the Vine Spirit to her original pagoda 13 164.

  • The Vine Spirit initially has no soul rings in Rongrong’s body 164.
  • The Rakshasa God tells her she can cultivate the vines after giving the pagoda seven rings, offering a route beyond her hereditary cultivation ceiling 13.

Soul Survival and Rakshasa Power

Rongrong survives possession through divine protection of her consciousness 13.

  • Secretly absorbs Li Pei’s Rakshasa power until she can reclaim her body 13.
  • While displaced, observes events around her body and notices Sword Douluo’s concealed presence 80.
  • Cannot travel far from Li Pei while Li Pei occupies her body; her protests do not reach the people she watches 80.
  • Continues fighting for control after her initial recovery 174.

Relationships

  • Ning Fengzhi — Father, sect master, and principal authority over her succession and marriage. Rongrong resists his restrictions but remains concerned for him when his behavior changes 146 198.
  • Yun Qin — Mother. Protective during Rongrong’s poisoning and opposed to the risks of her relationship with Tang San 82 139.
  • Shangguan Li — Older biological sister. Rongrong admires her beauty and seeks her company, while Shangguan remains emotionally distant 59 178 185.
  • Tang San — Romantic partner and fiancé. Rongrong wants acceptance independent of her status; Tang San repeatedly treats her identity, sect influence, and divine inheritance as assets 19 82 217.
  • Lin Ying — Rescued childhood companion and foster sister. Rongrong’s affection is sincere, but Lin Ying is a Spirit Hall operative; Rongrong eventually suspects her and asks Ning Fengzhi to investigate 13 101 217 241.
  • Li Pei — Romantic rival and competing soul within her body. Their struggle produces twin Martial Souls but ultimately ends with their souls fused together 13 158 164 174.
  • Sword Douluo / Chen Xin — Grandfather-like protector, called “Sword Grandpa.” Secretly follows her outings and investigates changes in her behavior 13 80 133.
  • Bone Douluo / Gu Rong — Family protector. Helps rescue Lin Ying and reacts angrily when Rongrong is poisoned despite Sword Douluo’s surveillance 139 241.
  • Xiao Wu — Companion whose sacrifice is intended to empower Rongrong against Tang San and Tang Hao. Rongrong’s failure to honor that trust becomes Gu Yuena’s stated reason for killing her 166 158.
