Ch. 201The Water Elemental Duke Hydraxis
Summary
Shawn travels with Chromie to Azshara, a shattered remnant of the Night Elf capital Zin-Azshari, destroyed during the War of the Ancients. The region is dangerous and difficult to reach: reefs make its waters nearly unnavigable, and Naga, Sea Giants, and other creatures inhabit the ruins. Shawn is not interested in searching for Azuregos; he already knows that a Megalodon swallowed the blue fragment of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands. Since the predator stays in deep water, he needs help bringing it to the surface.
Shawn seeks the Hydraxian Waterlords, powerful water elementals who rule the local waters. He and Chromie search from the air until they find their island, where thousands of water elementals gather. Shawn identifies their leader, Duke Hydraxis, whose power far exceeds what his Eye of Insight can measure. After landing, Shawn presents a letter from Jaina and explains his request.
Hydraxis is pleased by Jaina’s letter and says finding the Megalodon would be easy, but he expects compensation for helping Shawn rather than Jaina herself. He acknowledges Shawn’s modest mana but notes Jaina’s praise, as well as Shawn’s connections to Aegwynn and the Bronze Dragon Anachronos. Hydraxis offers a bargain: when Shawn is capable, he must help destroy the fire elementals in Blackrock Mountain, the water elementals’ natural enemies.
Character developments and interactions
- Shawn acts cautiously and pragmatically, seeking assistance rather than attempting to fight the Megalodon alone. He accepts Hydraxis’s terms as fair.
- Duke Hydraxis is revealed as wise, powerful, and willing to help—but only through an exchange. His trust in Shawn rests partly on Jaina’s recommendation and Shawn’s notable allies.
- Chromie serves as Shawn’s fast-flying guide, though her unreliable memory means they must locate the island by searching.
- Jaina, though absent, shapes the encounter: her close relationship with Hydraxis secures Shawn an audience and lends weight to her recommendation.
- Shawn and Hydraxis establish a practical agreement, with future cooperation dependent on Shawn becoming strong enough to face the fire elementals.
Significant themes
- Reciprocity and obligation: Help is treated as a fair exchange, not a free gift.
- Reputation and trust: Jaina’s endorsement and Shawn’s associations help him earn consideration despite his limited power.
- Azeroth’s ancient scars: Azshara’s ruined landscape reflects the lasting consequences of the Sundering and the War of the Ancients.
- Natural rivalries: The conflict between water and fire elementals motivates Hydraxis’s request.
