Power Progression
The documented awakenings below track individual members’ development of the clan’s Sharingan, rather than a collective clan level.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Two-Tomoe Sharingan — Uchiha Chonhua | 12 | Awakens at eight, sharply increasing his chakra and combat strength. Chonhua suspects his own ocular power fused with the awakening unlocked through the Itachi character card. |
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan — Uchiha Chonhua | 41 | Demonstrates the developed Sharingan in combat against Rasa and Karura. |
| One-Tomoe Sharingan — Uchiha Mikoto | 46 | Awakens during the battle with Rasa after believing Chonhua has been impaled; the apparent victim is a clone. |
| Mangekyō Sharingan — Uchiha Chonhua | 74 | The Itachi card unlocks Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, and Susanoo. Chonhua’s own Mangekyō also awakens, granting Amenotokotachi, a three-second time-stop technique. His combined ocular power reaches an Eternal Mangekyō-equivalent level, but his eyes do not evolve into Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. |
| One-Tomoe Sharingan — Uchiha Obito | 132 | Awakens from emotional distress while witnessing a simulated clan massacre in Chonhua’s Tsukuyomi. His body cannot sustain the eyes, and Chonhua provides immediate medical assistance. |
Background / History
Founding of Konoha
The Uchiha and Senju were mortal enemies before jointly founding Konohagakure. Their shared origins did not erase their blood feuds: records of both clans’ ancestry were available through the Uchiha stone tablet, yet their conflict continued for a millennium 1 11 176.
Many Uchiha regarded their founding status as grounds for claiming the Hokage position. After Hashirama’s death, Tobirama and Hiruzen maintained varying degrees of caution toward the clan, making an Uchiha’s path to the office politically difficult 1 2.
Earlier Leadership
| Clan Head | Position in Succession | Tenure and Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Uchiha Madara | First head after Konoha’s founding | Sought to take the clan out of Konoha. When his clansmen refused to follow him, he departed alone, leaving the leadership vacant 59. |
| Unnamed second head | Second | Incited a rebellion during Tobirama’s tenure and was suppressed 59. |
| Unnamed third head | Third | Died in an internal struggle in which other clan members usurped him 59. |
| Uchiha Shohei | Fourth | Kept the extremist faction relatively contained and maintained authority through his standing as the clan’s strongest member. His death created the vacancy contested by Chonhua, Fugaku, and Maeno 59 104 112 118. |
| Uchiha Chonhua | Successor to Shohei | Defeated the remaining opposition and became the youngest clan head in Uchiha history 123. |
Both the clan and Konoha’s leadership treated the earlier internal strife as taboo. Numerous surviving clansmen were blind or missing their eyes. Chonhua suspected that abuse of Izanagi, including killing relatives to steal their Sharingan, had driven the conflict; this explanation is presented as his inference 59.
Shohei’s Tenure and Wartime Divisions
Shohei attempted to bring Chonhua’s talents under clan control, including assigning him to protect Fugaku on a mission. He also argued that Chonhua’s Uchiha blood obligated him to serve the clan rather than devote himself exclusively to the Hokage 60 101 102.
Chonhua’s battlefield achievements earned him acceptance as deputy captain of the Military Police Force. His approachable conduct and strength attracted clansmen to the Hokage Faction, provoking resentment among Shohei’s supporters 104 105.
Before a battle, Chonhua secretly placed Shohei under genjutsu while the clan head was preparing Izanagi. Shohei subsequently died, and the clansmen could not explain why his forbidden technique had failed 104 106.
Chonhua’s Succession
Ryutai was the first to propose Chonhua as the next clan head, and Hiruzen supported the candidacy. Chonhua’s publicly revealed Mangekyō Sharingan was decisive: the clan regarded him as its only current wielder, and Ryutai emphasized that strength outweighed inherited prestige 109 111 112.
By the election, Ryutai’s faction and supporters such as Zongxing gave Chonhua the backing of half the clan’s mid-to-high-level members. The selection took place at Naka Shrine, with Chonhua, Fugaku, and Maeno as candidates 114 118.
Opponents challenged Chonhua’s allegiance to the Hokage and claimed his position depended entirely on the Sharingan. He answered by fighting them without using it, overwhelming their ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu. The remaining opposition conceded, confirming his leadership 119 120 121 122 123.
Organization & Culture
Authority and Succession
- Strength-based leadership: The strongest individuals traditionally hold practical authority. Under Shohei, the clan head and his two principal assistants were its first-, second-, and third-strongest members 3.
- Honorary elders: Elders exist, but seniority alone does not allow them to override stronger clansmen 3.
- Sharingan-based status: Whether a member has awakened the Sharingan—and how many tomoe it possesses—forms an unspoken hierarchy. The Mangekyō commands exceptional reverence 113 116 123.
- Internal selection: Choosing a clan head is an Uchiha matter; the Hokage has no formal authority to interfere 112.
- Families within the clan: Close blood relatives usually take priority over distant kin. Factions form around shared ideology, interests, and personal connections 10.
Political Factions
| Faction | Prominent Members | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Hokage Faction | Chonhua, Zongxing, and Uchiha closely aligned with Hiruzen | Supports the Hokage directly. Hiruzen introduces Chonhua to its members during preparations for the Nine-Tails sealing transfer 35 104 114. |
| Konoha Faction | Ryutai; Shohei’s supporters, later represented by Fugaku | Favors belonging to Konoha while preserving Uchiha interests and independence from the Hokage. Ryutai supports Chonhua partly because he could become the first Uchiha Hokage 15 104 119 124. |
| Extremist Faction | Longzhi and other Uchiha-supremacist clansmen | Opposes the Konoha leadership and condemns the Hokage Faction’s loyalty to Hiruzen. Its members challenge Chonhua’s eligibility and resist his reforms 57 118 119 123. |
The clan is not ideologically uniform. Members openly disagree over war and peace, and Chonhua distinguishes gentle or pragmatic relatives from radicals rather than treating every Uchiha as alike 6 7.
Key Members
- Uchiha Chonhua — Clan head and Military Police reformer; declares his ambition to become the first Uchiha Hokage 123 124.
- Uchiha Ryutai — Second-in-command, Mikoto’s father, and a major supporter of Chonhua’s succession; presides over the first Uchiha Clan Court 3 112 128.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Shohei’s son and a rival leadership candidate. Inherits his father’s faction and resigns from the Military Police after opposing Chonhua’s changes 3 118 124.
- Uchiha Mikoto — Chonhua’s teammate and Chief of General Affairs; later works with him as Assistant Minister of Justice 17 128 136.
- Uchiha Zongxing — Hokage-aligned supporter appointed Right Vice Captain of the Military Police Force 114 123.
- Uchiha Obito — Young clansman taught by Chonhua; awakens his Sharingan during an illusion-based lesson 131 132.
- Uchiha Longzhi — Vocal extremist who contests Chonhua’s loyalty and authority 118 119 121.
Institutions & Reforms
Konoha Military Police Force
- Traditional role: The force functions as a major channel of Uchiha influence, making its internal affairs difficult for Hiruzen to affect. Clan children can pursue its assessment instead of attending the Ninja Academy 2 3 7.
- Earlier enforcement: Officers use cold warnings, beatings, corporal punishment, and fear-based Sharingan genjutsu. This contributes to a reputation so poor that some villagers fear the clan emblem itself 52.
- Chonhua’s restructuring: He appoints Zongxing as Right Vice Captain and prioritizes personnel loyal to his leadership. Fugaku and his faction withdraw in protest 123 124.
- Changed public conduct: Villagers notice gentler, more considerate enforcement after the reorganization 124.
Courts and Accountability
- Uchiha Clan Court: Ryutai presides over its first session, punishing members who accepted bribes or neglected their duties. The proceedings gain recognition within the clan 128.
- Sharingan interrogation: Chonhua uses genjutsu to verify testimony and expose wrongdoing, including misconduct by clansmen 128.
- Public standing: Continued work by the Military Police and Konoha Court raises Uchiha prestige. Neutral members and some former opponents begin supporting Chonhua 134.
- Administration: Mikoto assists Chonhua with justice-related records and reports, including case files submitted to Hiruzen for review 136 141.
Uchiha Academy
- Preschool reform: Chonhua converts the clan academy into preparation for children entering the Konoha Ninja Academy 131.
- Illusion-based instruction: He recreates battlefield experiences with the Mangekyō Sharingan to develop students’ mental resilience 131.
- Simulated massacre: A Tsukuyomi lesson depicts the clan’s destruction to motivate its children to seek protective strength. The massacre is an illusion, not an actual event in the current storyline 132.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The clan’s defining kekkei genkai grants enhanced perception, copying, and hypnosis; awakening it also causes a surge in chakra 12 122.
- Tracks weapon trajectories, fast movement, and chakra threads 39 65 84.
- Supports recording and studying techniques, as demonstrated when Chonhua memorizes the Flying Thunder God training principles 56.
- Enables combat genjutsu and the release of allies from illusions 21 78.
- Limit: Seeing an attack does not guarantee that the user’s body can respond quickly enough 121 122.
- Countermeasure: Avoiding direct eye contact is established advice for fighting Uchiha, though maintaining that discipline throughout battle is difficult 78.
Mangekyō Sharingan
A rare evolution with individualized ocular techniques. Its abilities reflect what the wielder subconsciously yearns for at awakening 74.
- Can provide enough power to contend with Kage-level opponents 112.
- Chonhua demonstrates Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, Susanoo, and his concealed time-based technique, Amenotokotachi 74.
- Repeated use depletes ocular power and threatens permanent blindness 74 112 188.
- Chonhua’s ability to replenish ocular power comes from his acquired Uzumaki constitution and Sage Transformation, not a standard Uchiha trait 74 188.
- Mangekyō can intensify a wielder’s thoughts toward extremism; Chonhua identifies this as one catalyst in his own loss of control 86.
Forbidden Ocular Techniques
- Izanagi: Alters reality. Shohei prepares it before combat, and Fugaku is reported to have activated it successfully. Clan discussion identifies a functioning Sharingan as its requirement 103 106 160.
- Izanami: Chonhua associates its appearance with stopping the destructive abuse of Izanagi during the clan’s earlier internal strife 59.
- Eternal Mangekyō evolution: Two pairs of Mangekyō are a prerequisite, but success also depends on blood relationship; closer kinship increases the likelihood 74.
Clan Combat Techniques
- Uchiha Style: Throwing Technique: Uses precise projectile collisions to alter trajectories. Chonhua combines it with cloned weapons to redirect an entire barrage toward its attackers 84.
- Fire Release: Documented techniques used or supplied by members include Dragon Fire Technique and Flame Meteor 11.
- Genjutsu proficiency: Sharingan-bearing clansmen repeatedly employ illusions during the succession battle, though they fail against Chonhua 122.
Locations & Records
- Uchiha compound — Residential center containing members’ homes and family businesses, including Chonhua’s parents’ tempura shop 7 11 57.
- Ancestral lands and Naka Shrine — Located beyond the village; host the clan-head selection following Shohei’s funeral 117 118.
- Naka River — The river where Hashirama and Madara met, linking the ancestral area to Konoha’s founding history 118.
- Clan cemetery and ancestral tablets — Shohei is buried in the cemetery, while his spirit tablet is enshrined alongside those of previous leaders 117 118.
- Uchiha stone tablet — Contains records decipherable according to ocular power. Its deeper text concerns combining Senju and Uchiha power, the Rinnegan, and Infinite Tsukuyomi 176.
- Clan secrets — Accessible to Chonhua after he becomes clan head 151.
Relationships
- Senju Clan — Former mortal enemies and fellow founders of Konoha. Some Uchiha resent Chonhua’s visits to the Senju compound, while Ryutai welcomes them as evidence of integration 1 9 11.
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Seeks to integrate the Uchiha into village life and supports Chonhua’s leadership, while retaining concerns about the clan’s ocular power 2 112 117.
- Shimura Danzō and Root — Hostile actors who target Chonhua and betray Fugaku’s group. Danzō seeks the clan’s complete extermination; Chonhua eventually kills him 78 82 145.
- Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu — Senior officials suspicious of Chonhua’s heritage and Mangekyō. Hiruzen challenges Koharu’s prejudiced views 117.
- Uzumaki Clan — Uchiha and Uzumaki members cooperate during the Nine-Tails sealing transfer. Chonhua and Mikoto also participate in escorting Uzumaki refugees to Konoha 23 35.
- Tsunade — Chonhua’s teacher; his place on her team connects an Uchiha to the Hokage’s master–disciple lineage. She later demands justice for Danzō’s actions 16 111.
- Orochimaru — Interested in studying the clan’s ocular powers, particularly Chonhua’s unusual resistance to Mangekyō-related blindness. Chonhua declines his research invitation 188.
