Background

Founding and conflict with Konoha

The Uchiha and Senju jointly founded Konoha, but their partnership did not resolve their competing views of political power. Many Uchiha regarded themselves as founding partners unfairly denied the Hokage position, while other clans feared granting authority to a group associated with emotional instability and the Sharingan. 2

After Hashirama Senju's death, Uchiha hardliners opposed Tobirama Senju's policies and sought greater sovereignty. Tobirama suppressed these factions while also bringing Kagami Uchiha into his guard, temporarily containing—rather than resolving—the conflict. 2

The clan's authority over the Uchiha Military Police Force later made it appear to Danzō as a “state within a state.” When he demanded information on Uchiha secret arts, clan head Iwamasa invoked Hashirama's promise that Konoha would not interfere in the internal affairs or secret techniques of its clans. 21

Kamizuki's generation

Uchiha Kamizuki was revealed during his clan initiation to possess a Heavenly Restriction that prevented him from storing chakra. The clan head defended Kamizuki's father, removed the instructor who insulted the child, and allowed Kamizuki to remain accepted within the clan. 1

During the Second Shinobi World War, the Uchiha and Hyuga were sent to fight Kirigakure's Kekkei Genkai clans. The three-day battle killed both clans' heads and many of their members. Uchiha Mikoto emerged as one of the clan's most feared combatants after commanding Mahoraga, earning the battlefield epithet “Wicked Woman Who Commands Death.” 60

Following Kamizuki's return, Fugaku disclosed that he had only served as acting clan head after Iwamasa's death. Under Uchiha custom, leadership belongs to the clan's strongest member rather than passing hereditarily, and Iwamasa had intended for Kamizuki to assume the position when he came of age. 80

Political ascendancy

Kamizuki's execution of the Land of Fire's daimyo and purge of the Heian Capital nobility caused a worldwide upheaval. Reports described the Uchiha moving into the imperial residence, overturning the established relationship between shinobi villages and daimyo. 92

By the time of Konoha's reconstruction, the Uchiha Clan Compound occupied a vast central area of the village. Madara and Izuna returned to reside there, while Kamizuki's impending duel with Madara was announced as the contest that would determine both the clan head and the strongest shinobi in the world. 223

Organization and customs
