Background

Jiraiya was an orphan and a poor student in his youth, often mocked by Tsunade. He eventually reached Mount Myoboku through the Summoning Jutsu, signed the toad contract, and trained there for three years. By his return to Konoha, his strength had caught up with Tsunade and Orochimaru. 18

He later served alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru under Hiruzen Sarutobi. During their missions, Jiraiya repeatedly saved Tsunade from danger, developed unspoken feelings for her, and never confessed them. After the Third Shinobi World War, he took Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan as disciples in Amegakure. 18

Following Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki's deaths, Jiraiya attempted to take Naruto from Konoha. Hiruzen refused, promising that Naruto would be cared for as Minato and Kushina's child; Jiraiya trusted him and departed. 16

For years, Jiraiya traveled while tracking Orochimaru, gathering intelligence, and searching for the Child of Prophecy foretold by the Great Toad Sage. He initially believed that prophecy referred to Minato or Nagato. 16

He found Naruto after sensing the immense natural-energy surge from Naruto's battle against Kakuzu and Hidan. Naruto brought him into the Sealing Space, where Jiraiya met the soul fragments of Minato and Kushina and witnessed Naruto's memories of neglect and abuse in Konoha. The revelation left him guilt-ridden and turned him against the village leadership's actions. 16 17

Appearance

After practicing the Myriad Spirit Longevity Art, Jiraiya regained a youthful appearance resembling a man in his early twenties despite being over forty. 20 25

  • Long, thick white hair. 20
  • Tear-like facial markings, with a flame-shaped mark appearing beside the right one while using Spirit Energy Body Infusion. 20 21
  • Tall build, attributed in part to his years at Mount Myoboku. 19
  • Wears an Imperial God Robe; Naruto later receives a matching robe as Jiraiya's senior disciple. 39

Personality

Jiraiya is idealistic and has long sought a path to peace in the ninja world. He believes that the conflict between villages is driven not only by resources but by incompatible ideologies and the absence of a force capable of restraining violence. 17 26

Although initially reluctant to oppose Hiruzen or kill Orochimaru, he changes after learning the truth about Naruto's childhood and Konoha's corruption. He agrees to support Naruto's plans, leads their peace-focused organization, and openly confronts Hiruzen over the threat posed by Akatsuki. 17 23 26 31

He is protective and paternal toward Naruto and Hinata, buying Naruto new clothes, cooking for him, maintaining Minato and Kushina's home, and enduring Sage Shima's cooking to set an example for his disciples. 22 38 47

  • Greatly amplifies Fire Release beyond his other elemental techniques. 22
  • Reached the third of nine levels shortly after beginning cultivation. 22
  • Supports artifact refining through its internal flame. 21

Skyfire Battle Body

Jiraiya's offensive spiritual body, awakened through the Great Sun Skyfire Art.

  • Provides overwhelming physical strength; a kick reduced a tree trunk to sawdust and carried through seven trees. 22
  • Lets him create extremely destructive fire techniques, including a five-meter fire-infused Rasengan. 22
  • Enables him to overpower Orochimaru with a single Spirit Energy-infused punch and capture him. 29

Spirit Energy Body Infusion

A technique that floods the body with spiritual energy to enhance physical power.

  • Causes fiery-red spiritual energy to manifest across Jiraiya's body. 21
  • Enhances strength enough to shatter the ground beneath his feet. 21
  • Can be combined with Fire Release: Flame Bullet to produce a sustained beam of fire. 24

Martial Arts and Soul Cultivation

Naruto provides Jiraiya with martial and cultivation methods intended to keep his body and soul equal to his growing power.

  • Great Sumeru Hammer — Thirty-six hammer forms; the first thirty each increase attack power by ten percent, while the final six double it. 41
  • Seven Tribulations Finger — A finger art suited to condensing Jiraiya's explosive fire energy into a single point. 22
  • Fierce Demon Body — Physical cultivation method that prevents his body from falling behind his offensive power. 22
  • Soul Gathering Art — Compensates for his limited primordial-spirit perception, initially limited to a fifty-meter range. 22
  • Aura Burst — Releases an oppressive, heat-laden pressure powerful enough to crack walls and floors when tested without restraint. 37

Summoning and Toad Relations

Jiraiya maintains a long-standing contract with the toads of Mount Myoboku.

  • Signed the Mount Myoboku summoning contract as a child. 18
  • Can summon Gamatatsu for supplies and travel necessities. 20 26
  • Shares a deep friendship with Gamabunta, his first friend at Mount Myoboku. 48
  • Is a former student of Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima. 18 46

Jiraiya learns artifact refining through the Encyclopedia of Artifact Refining.

  • Receives the manual from Naruto after beginning the Great Sun Skyfire Art. 21
  • Forges weapons from Chakra Conductive Metal. 40 41
  • Continues making progress in artifact refining while approaching the fourth level of his cultivation art. 50
