Background / History

During the Nine-Tails attack on Konoha, Minato and his wife, Kushina Uzumaki, were mortally wounded while sealing Kurama into their newborn son, Naruto. Minato performed the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style, embedding both his and Kushina's chakra consciousness within Naruto's Sealing Space and adding a lock to Kurama's seal before dying. 1

Although Minato became Fourth Hokage because his strength and prestige exceeded Hiruzen Sarutobi's, the village's Anbu and major decisions reportedly remained under Hiruzen's control. After Minato's death, Hiruzen resumed the Hokage position. 17

When Naruto partially removed Kurama's seal outside Konoha, Minato's chakra consciousness manifested and stopped him. Naruto's cold reaction confused Minato until Kurama showed him Memory Orbs documenting Naruto's abuse, isolation, surveillance, and the Konoha leadership's corruption. Realizing that Naruto's inheritance had been embezzled and his identity deliberately concealed, Minato broke down in remorse. 7

Kurama used converted spiritual energy to prevent Minato's consciousness from dissipating. Minato reconciled with Naruto, agreed to teach him the Flying Thunder God Technique, and helped sustain a family-like life within the Sealing Space alongside Kushina and Kurama. 7 8 9

Minato later explained the truth of Konoha's decline to Jiraiya and revealed that he and Kushina required their bodies, held by Orochimaru, for true resurrection. He made clear that, once restored, he intended to return to Konoha over the suffering inflicted on Naruto. 16 17

After Orochimaru's research reversed the Dead Demon Consuming Seal, Minato's chakra consciousness merged with his true soul and entered his preserved body through the Impure World Reincarnation ritual. Restored with all memories from his time inside Naruto, he apologized to his son again and began acclimating to his new body. 42 43

Following his revival, Minato assisted Jiraiya in expanding underground storage, directed workers' living arrangements for the planned village, gathered construction materials with Naruto, and helped supervise the project with Kushina. 44 45 46

Appearance

Minato's chakra manifestation is described with a sky-blue right eye; it turns blood-red after he witnesses Naruto's treatment through the Memory Orbs. 7

Personality

Minato is gentle in ordinary life, earning the nickname “Little Sun,” but is feared for his ruthlessness against enemy combatants during war. His anger is especially evident when he witnesses Hidan's murder of civilians, children, and a pregnant woman; he remains silent with clenched fists and an icy expression. 14

He initially believed Naruto would grow up as a hero protected by Konoha. Learning the truth leaves him devastated and ashamed of his own naivety, but he does not retreat from responsibility: he supports Naruto's plans while warning him when he considers them too dangerous. 7
