Background / History

Tang San cultivated independently from childhood, displaying abilities unusual enough that his father, Tang Hao, initially suspected he was not his biological son. Tang Hao neglected him until Tang San awakened both Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer; the latter confirmed Tang San's bloodline to him. 10

At Nuoding Academy, Tang San cultivated alongside Xiao Wu and became Yu Xiaogang's disciple. When soul beasts vanished across the continent, he immediately recognized that his Twin Martial Souls would eventually require soul rings he could no longer obtain. He nevertheless tried to comfort Yu Xiaogang as the latter's soul-beast-based theories collapsed. 2 7 9 13 14

Yu Xiaogang's decision to research Self-Condensed Soul Rings restored Tang San's hope. He accompanied his teacher to Martial Soul Hall and its Creation Institute, where he continued cultivating while the institute investigated a replacement for conventional rings. 15 16 20 27

Tang San reached level 20 in less than a year, but the lack of a soul ring trapped him at that level for a decade. His confidence suffered when Su Mo publicly revealed the completed Ring Condensation Technique, particularly after Tang San realized Su Mo had turned knowledge Tang San once considered distinctive into a world-changing method. 37 54 58

He initially attempted to develop a personal alternative with Yu Xiaogang, testing the Mysterious Heaven Skill, Hunyuan Mental Method, and other internal-energy approaches. Directly following Su Mo's soul-power route caused a cultivation deviation, yet Tang San ultimately used Su Mo's technique to condense a ring and enter the Soul Grandmaster realm. 65 66 87

The internal-energy circulation foundational to Su Mo's technique had indirectly originated with Tang San: Tang San had taught Xiao Wu several Internal Energy Methods at Nuoding Academy, and Su Mo apparently acquired the relevant method through her. Tang San disclosed this to Yu Xiaogang out of guilt and a desire to ease his teacher's disappointment over the Creation Institute's failure. 64

After leaving the Creation Institute, Tang San and Yu Xiaogang sought admission to several academies. Although the schools were impressed by Tang San's Self-Created Soul Skills, each refused him when he would not teach those techniques to teammates. He eventually joined the Barak Kingdom team with Yu Xiaogang after agreeing to share non-core techniques with its members. 110 125 126

During the Continental Elite Tournament, Tang San supplied the Barak Team with technique-based Self-Created Soul Skills adapted from martial arts of his previous life. The team's results brought him considerable recognition, though Tang San privately understood that his universal techniques were fundamentally different from Su Mo's martial-soul-tailored combat systems. 126 128 129

Tang San's defeat by Shui Bing'er forced him to reconsider the limits of Blue Silver Grass and seek earlier cultivation of his Clear Sky Hammer. Soon afterward, Yu Xiaogang revealed that Tang San was a direct descendant of the Clear Sky Sect and that Tang Hao was the famed Clear Sky Douluo. Following these revelations, Tang San decided to seek out Tang Hao after the tournament and rebuild the Tang Sect in this world. Yu Xiaogang accepted Tang San's invitation to join the sect and assist in its development. Tang San is unaware that Tang Hao was killed by Su Mo before he could begin this search. 91 135

Personality

Tang San is highly diligent and persistent in cultivation. Even while blocked at level 20, he maintained his daily practice and trusted Yu Xiaogang to find a solution rather than pressuring him. 37

He is empathetic toward Yu Xiaogang's despair and repeatedly tries to support his teacher after the extinction of soul beasts invalidates the latter's life's work. 13 15
