Background / History
Tsunade arrives in the Land of Whirlpools as part of Konoha's reinforcements after the Uzumaki Clan's destruction. Though initially cold and intimidating, she reassures the survivors and is enraged by the massacre; the Uzumaki are her grandmother Uzumaki Mito's kin and longstanding Senju allies. 10
During the return journey, she repels an ambush targeting the Senju Clan with Heavenly Foot, then reports the Uzumaki Clan's annihilation to Sarutobi Hiruzen. She resents Shimura Danzō and refuses to acknowledge him when he confronts the survivors. 13 14
Tsunade brings the Uzumaki survivors to the Senju Clan grounds and, after recognizing Xing Yu's concealed strength, invites him and Kushina into her personal courtyard. A spar with Xing Yu develops from mutual suspicion into respect; despite discovering he feigned an injury, she honors their arrangement by giving him the Multi Shadow Clone Technique. 14 16 17
After Xing Yu, Kushina, and Mikoto graduate, Tsunade becomes Team 9's supervising Jonin. She tests the team personally, trains them in chakra control and the Strength of a Hundred technique, and accepts increasingly reciprocal instruction from Xing Yu. 33 36
During the war, Tsunade serves chiefly as Konoha's foremost medical ninja while still participating in battle. She treats poison victims, clashes with Chiyo, and continues to protect her students. 70 72 73
After learning of Konoha's role in the Senju Clan's decline, Tsunade formally severs the Senju Clan's connection to the village. She later accepts her status as a rogue ninja and joins Kushina, Mikoto, and Konan in the four-member Feather Village. 175 171 187
Appearance
Tsunade is a golden-haired woman with a striking face and cold, piercing eyes. Her severe expression softens when addressing vulnerable Uzumaki survivors. 10
- Golden hair. 10
- A notably beautiful face. 10
- Intimidating, icy gaze when angered. 10
- Her younger appearance is described as slight-framed. 10
Personality
Tsunade is blunt, violent-tempered, and quick to express irritation through a punch, glare, or threat. Her aggression is paired with strong protectiveness: she shelters the Uzumaki survivors, intervenes in Kushina's behavior, worries about her students' safety, and leads others away from battles they cannot safely join. 10 33 76 158
She is proud of the Senju Clan and deeply offended by insults toward it. Discovering the circumstances behind the clan's decline drives her to abandon Konoha entirely rather than continue supporting a village she believes betrayed her family. 174 175 186
Tsunade is highly competitive, especially with Kushina, and becomes frustrated when others surpass her in Sage Mode or Wood Release. She is also openly jealous of Shin's closeness with Kushina and Mikoto, though her relationship with him later becomes explicit. 122 129 191 247
Abilities & Skills
Strength Enhancement Taijutsu
Tsunade concentrates chakra into her body to produce devastating physical force.
- Heavenly Foot — cracks the ground, creates fissures, and knocks multiple opponents off balance with a single stomp. 13
- Strength of a Hundred Technique — amplifies her punches and kicks to the point that she can extinguish a Great Fireball Technique with one punch. 34
- Her physical strength later reaches a level sufficient to overwhelmingly defeat Uchiha Madara. 447
Medical Ninjutsu
Tsunade is recognized as Konoha's strongest medical ninja. 70
- Uses green medical chakra to diagnose and heal injuries; she immediately realizes Xing Yu faked being wounded during their spar. 17
- Her expertise is considered essential against Chiyo's poisons during the war. 70
- Uses the Mystical Palm Technique to rapidly treat damage to her own arm after clashing with Xing Yu. 34
Ninjutsu Instruction and S-rank Techniques
Tsunade is both an instructor and a capable learner of advanced techniques.
- Teaches Team 9 the Strength of a Hundred technique after their sparring assessment. 35 36
- Learns the Rasengan and its throwing application from Xing Yu. 36
- Is taught the Wind Style: Rasenshuriken after acknowledging Xing Yu as her teacher; she is warned not to reveal the S-rank technique casually. 46
- Receives a copy of Konoha's Scroll of Sealing, allowing her to learn a broader range of village techniques. 149 152
Wood Release
Wood Release was Tsunade's childhood aspiration because of her grandfather Senju Hashirama. 212
- Initially cannot use Wood Release despite access to its theory and Senju heritage. 46 247
- Trains intensely after Kushina masters the kekkei genkai first. 247 249
- Successfully masters Wood Release and considers herself capable of using its standard techniques apart from Wood Release Sage Art's ultimate moves. 259
- By this period, Wood Release has become her strongest combat method. 274
Sage Mode Training
Tsunade asks Shin to teach her Sage Mode rather than relying on the Shikkotsu Forest's Slug Sage. 177 178
- Has a Sage Body, which Shin believes gives her strong potential for senjutsu. 46 178
- Learns that Sage Mode requires an exact balance of Physical Energy, Spiritual Energy, and Natural Energy. 178
- The provided material does not confirm that she completes Sage Mode training.
Equipment / Items
- Ninja Tool Pouch — carries scrolls and ninja tools. 17
- Shikkotsu Forest Summoning Scroll — possesses the contract scroll for the Three Great Sage Region and offers it to Shin. 177
- Copy of the Scroll of Sealing — receives a copy containing nearly all non-clan Konoha ninjutsu. 149
Relationships
- Uzumaki Shin / Xing Yu — Her student and later reciprocal teacher. Their early sparring develops into mutual respect; she learns the Rasengan and Rasenshuriken from him, and they later become romantic partners. 16 35 46 191
- Uzumaki Kushina — Uzumaki survivor placed in her care and a member of Team 9. Their relationship is protective but intensely competitive, frequently escalating into arguments and near-fights. 14 33 123
- Uchiha Mikoto — Team 9 student whom Tsunade allows to stay at her residence for safety. Tsunade later trains alongside her and joins her in Feather Village. 33 43 178 187
- Uzumaki Mito — Her grandmother, a former Uzumaki princess and the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki. Mito's connection to the Uzumaki Clan motivates Tsunade's anger over its destruction. 10 17
- Nawaki — Her younger brother. Tsunade is fiercely protective of him and confronts him for appearing on the battlefield. 96
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former Hokage to whom she reports the Uzumaki Clan's destruction. Her relationship with him collapses after she learns of his involvement in the Senju Clan's decline. 13 174 175
- Shimura Danzō — An adversarial political figure whom Tsunade openly despises and suspects of underhanded actions against those under her protection. 14 43
- Jiraiya and Orochimaru — Fellow Konoha ninja assigned alongside her on wartime missions. She has little patience for Jiraiya and violently dismisses his objections when her students leave Konoha. 49 148
- Konan — Initially entrusted to Tsunade's care by Shin during the war; Tsunade later leads her to safety during major conflicts. 72 158 459
