Background & History

Sword Path Breakthrough

Chen Jianjun was already a renowned level 97 swordsman and the father of Chen Xin when Dugu Bo delivered him a letter from Xu Xiao. The letter described a sword path progressing from technique to Dao: the heavy sword without an edge, all things as swords, and ultimately a realm where no sword surpasses having a sword. 10

The teachings triggered a violent epiphany. Chen Jianjun's sword intent destroyed his surroundings, his Seven Kill Sword manifested uncontrollably, and he broke through to level 98. He recognized the “realm of no sword” as his personal path toward level 99 and immediately sought out the letter's author. 10

Believing he owed a debt that could otherwise tarnish his sword heart, Chen Jianjun offered Xu Xiao three requests. He initially intended to settle the favor cleanly and avoid further involvement with the young group. 10

Xu Xiao attributed the teachings to Dugu Qiubai, whose whereabouts he claimed not to know. Chen Jianjun remained eager to meet this supposed sword master long afterward, even suggesting that Dugu Bo investigate whether the man might be an ancestor of the Dugu Family with a mutated martial soul. 10 72 188

The Three Requests

Xu Xiao's first request was protection for himself, Gui Mei, Yue Guan, and Dugu Bo. Chen Jianjun forged four small swords, each containing a full-power strike from his level 98 peak; the wielder could activate its protective sword aura with soul power. 11

For the remaining requests, Xu Xiao asked Chen Jianjun to let Chen Xin travel with the group and to forge two soft swords and one heavy sword. Chen Jianjun accepted, but imposed a three-year deadline for Chen Xin to demonstrate progress on his own sword path. 11

His sword intent later allowed Xu Xiao's group to cut through the poisonous mist surrounding the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well. The group used the small swords to shield themselves while entering the area. 12

Support for Chen Xin and Chuan Ling

Chen Jianjun sent Chen Xin to Xu Xiao's group, where the latter's arrogance was swiftly broken by the other brothers. After learning that Xu Xiao's letter had enabled his father's breakthrough, Chen Xin accepted Xu Xiao's guidance and became the group's fifth brother. 19 20

Although aware that Xu Xiao had used his name and influence to strengthen the emerging Chuan Ling faction, Chen Jianjun tolerated the arrangement. He later resolved that, since Chen Xin had chosen this path, he would protect the faction as its father figure. 41 46

He eventually accepted Xu Xiao and the sworn brothers as family, instructing them to address him as “Uncle.” 61

Chen Jianjun was initially astonished to discover the extent of Xu Xiao's influence, including the Ye Family's incorporation into Chuan Ling and Xu Xiao's role in provoking Tang Chen's duel with Qian Daoliu. He ultimately recognized that he had repeatedly underestimated Xu Xiao. 62

After witnessing Chen Xin's growth and Xu Xiao's Soul Bestowal ability, Chen Jianjun agreed to hold a nominal position in Chuan Ling and guard the Spirit Pagoda in Heaven Dou while Xu Xiao traveled overseas. 156 157

His acceptance of Chuan Ling also required adjusting to its cooperation with soul beasts. On encountering Snow Empress and Zi Ji, he initially regarded them with suspicion and warned Xu Xiao about trusting other species. Nevertheless, he accepted Xu Xiao's explanation and declined to interfere because he trusted him. 154

Tang Chen's Downfall

Chen Jianjun aided Xu Xiao's plan against Tang Chen after the latter's duel with Qian Daoliu. He analyzed the possibility of using Ye Lin's healing role and the Snowy Swan Kiss to deceive Tang Chen, then supplied a strand of protective sword intent for Ye Lin in case Tang Chen launched a final counterattack. 63 64

During Tang Chen and Qian Daoliu's battle, Chen Jianjun shielded Xu Xiao's group from the clash's shockwaves. He recognized Qian Daoliu's defeat after Tang Chen used Ring Detonation and the Great Sumeru Hammer, though he later understood that Qian Daoliu had concealed his full strength. 65 66

Tang Chen ultimately self-destructed rather than die to the plot against him. Chen Jianjun rescued the grievously wounded Ye Lin, whose survival depended on Chen Jianjun's protective sword intent, and later reported the devastating casualties suffered by the Clear Sky Sect, Martial Soul Hall, and other factions. 67 68

Xu Xiao's companions recuperated at the Chen Family for a week after the battle. Chen Jianjun explained that both emperors were near death, several sect leaders were gravely wounded, and the Clear Sky Sect had lost numerous senior figures. He and Xu Xiao concluded that Tang Chen's death and the survivors' injuries provided the younger group with several years of relative safety to develop. 69

Sea God Trials and Limit Douluo

At Xu Xiao's suggestion, Chen Jianjun traveled to Sea God Island. He received the Sea God's Red Grade Six Trials and began the first assessment, Traverse the Sea God's Light, seeking to break through to level 99. 119 121

After learning more about divine inheritances, Chen Jianjun developed ambitions beyond the Limit Douluo realm. However, Xu Xiao explained that his Red Grade Six Trials were insufficient for the Sea God's inheritance, even if he obtained the Heart of the Sea God. 155

Learning that divine envoys could be required to sacrifice themselves for an inheritor also made him relieved that he had received only six trials. Although willing to pursue a divine position, he was unwilling to surrender his life in such a sacrifice. 155

Chuan Ling Elder and Slaughter King

Chen Jianjun formally agreed to oversee Chuan Ling's Spirit Pagoda while Xu Xiao traveled to another continent, accepting a nominal position that would allow him to guard the faction in Heaven Dou. 157

He used the Spirit Pagoda's simulated spaces to train against the Evil Eye Tyrant Lord. Though initially killed by the simulated creature, he learned that death within the pagoda merely ejects the participant rather than killing them. 167

Before this encounter, Xu Xiao had explained the pagoda's functions and permitted him to improve his soul ring ages there. His defeat came from a spiritual laser that shattered his spiritual power before he could react; after learning he was safe, he promptly returned to the seventh floor to challenge the creature again. 166 167

Chen Jianjun also accompanied Xu Xiao's expedition to hunt the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King. Witnessing the group's attacks and learning that Gui Mei and Yue Guan's fusion skill imposed forced control on opponents below god rank gave him a clearer understanding of the younger generation's strength. In Slaughter City, Chen Jianjun killed the Hundred Thousand Year Blood Red Nine-headed Bat King within the Slaughter Temple and obtained its right arm soul bone. He also achieved eighty consecutive Slaughter Arena victories within only a few months. 224 225

After Xu Xiao claimed the Asura Divine Sword, he warned Chen Jianjun to stay away from Slaughter City while investigating the consequences. After returning to Slaughter Town, he asked Gu Rong whether Chuan Ling held the Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud, then accompanied him back to Chuan Ling to report to Gui Mei. Sea God Island was meanwhile preparing to resist Spirit Hall's anticipated attack. 284

Chen Jianjun later joined Ye Lin and the others in examining a new oracle delivered to Bo Saixi. Its demands involved bringing Tang San to Sea God Island, reconciling with mainland powers, and encouraging Xiao Wu and the Angel God's successor to grow close to Tang San. The group sought Xu Xiao's advice and learned that he had narrowly avoided exposing his presence to the Asura God. 396

Soul Cores and Divine Relics

Chen Jianjun learned of Soul Cores from Zi Ji while Xu Xiao condensed his first one. Realizing their value in amplifying a cultivator's strength, he immediately became determined to condense one himself. 188

Blue Lightning Conflict and the Asura Threat

Chen Jianjun joined Chuan Ling's demand for reparations from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan after Liu Erlong attempted to shift blame for her actions and use soul beasts against his group. He imposed compensation of forty-two Ten Thousand Year soul bones, gave the clan one year to produce them, and accepted Yu Luomian's body parts as collateral. 314

He later disclosed that Spirit Hall had repeatedly attempted to infiltrate Slaughter City and that Qian Xunji had personally sought Yu Xiaogang there. Blue Lightning Hidden Realm and Reassignment

Tang Zhan, Tang Xiao, Yu Yuanzhen, Yu Xiaogang, and Tang San later approached Chen Jianjun in Slaughter Town after secretly returning from the sea. He received them despite their wanted status, but made little effort to conceal his disdain. In particular, he kept his distance from Tang San because Xu Xiao had described him as a source of misfortune, and Chen Jianjun feared bringing that misfortune home to his granddaughter. 437 438

When the visitors sought information about the events in Vast Sea City and Chuan Ling's assistance, Chen Jianjun demanded something genuinely valuable in exchange. He rejected Tang Xiao's offer of half their resources and pressed Yu Yuanzhen for another bargaining asset. Tang Zhan then exposed the existence of Blue Lightning's secret realm, the source of its Dragon Transformation skill and the clan's true birthplace, which normally required a special soul bone to enter. 438

Chen Jianjun later accompanied Xu Xiao to Blue Lightning's former base to investigate. They found Liu Erlong and Ah Rou searching for the same realm, then discovered a concealed underground gateway decorated with nine dragons and a crown-shaped indentation. Chen Jianjun could sense the gate but could not detect the space beyond it. Xu Xiao forced entry without the key and protected them from the lightning storm inside by absorbing and redirecting the bolts through space. 441

Afterward, Xu Xiao stopped Chen Jianjun from returning to his Slaughter City duties. Tang San's group's entry had drawn the Asura God's attention, and both the Asura God and Sea God would regularly monitor the area; the presence of a level 100 powerhouse would therefore risk exposing something unusual. Chen Jianjun accepted the warning and initially welcomed the prospect of a vacation. Instead, Xu Xiao assigned him to oversee a newly created Thunder Pool at Spirit Hall, arrange guards, and supervise the site as Chuan Ling considered using its more central location. 445

Family

Chen Jianjun is openly affectionate toward his granddaughter, Chen Yuansha. He was reluctant to leave her after Ling Yuan brought the child to Slaughter Town and eagerly delayed his return to Chuan Ling so that he could spend more time with her. 293
