Appearance
- Build and features: Born covered in black fur, with facial folds thick enough to nearly obscure his eyes. As a child, he is described as burly and substantially larger than his village peers 321 348 354.
- Clothing and voice: Wears loose blue clothing at his awakening and speaks in a notably rough, harsh voice 349.
- Odor: His strong smell drives the other children out of the awakening hut. Old Jack explains that his persistent latrine habit is unrelated to poverty or food shortages 348 349.
- Later injuries: Becomes a eunuch after Xu Xiao’s mental interference, suffers crushed legs, and later sustains a severe eye injury after losing his fortune 354 371 393.
- Mobility: Uses a wheelchair during the voyage intended to take him to Sea God Island 411 412.
Personality
Tang San reacts to ridicule with concealed hostility and frequently treats insults as grounds for killing. During his awakening, he privately wants to kill the children who despise him; much later, he responds similarly to Chen Jianjun’s disdain 349 438.
He is strongly attracted to power and authority. Yu Xiaogang wins his interest by promising a control-oriented cultivation path that would make him the team’s commanding center. Tang San also sees control abilities as a way to create openings for hidden weapons 363.
His outward respect often conceals calculation. He initially reveres Yu Xiaogang and refuses to abandon him when the Black Gorillas attack, but later regards his teacher as useful for absorbing disasters. Once offered a divine trial requiring Yu Xiaogang’s death, he welcomes the opportunity while pretending that loyalty makes the decision unbearable 359 364 371 452 454.
Tang San does value having a family, especially a father in his new life, but places his advancement first when forced to choose. He postpones rescuing Tang Hao because becoming a god would supposedly allow him to resolve the danger afterward. He also feigns concern for captured clansmen because he fears losing his relatives’ support 427 440.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San inherits a Beast Martial Soul from Hei Xing and a mutated version of his father’s weapon Martial Soul 349 350.
- Black Gorilla: Resembles his mother’s gorilla form. Yu Xiaogang proposes developing it along the control path rather than direct assault 349 363.
- Mutated Clear Sky Hammer: A small, pitch-black hammer bearing a faint Black Gorilla image. Xu Xiao attributes the mutation to Hei Xing’s unusually powerful bloodline 349.
- Concealment: Tang Hao orders him to hide the hammer and tell no one about his Twin Martial Souls 350.
- Sabotaged guidance: Yu Xiaogang recommends a plant Soul Ring and promises additional arms and control abilities, but privately intends this advice to ruin Tang San’s development 363.
Otherworld Cultivation Techniques
Tang San’s soul originates in another world and carries techniques recorded in the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record. Gu Yuena identifies these techniques as stolen knowledge 337.
- Mysterious Heaven Skill: His cultivation method reaches a bottleneck before his awakening. He later concludes that obtaining a Soul Ring is necessary to continue cultivating 349 359.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Uses this movement technique while charging at Xiao Wu, though Liu Erlong intercepts and slaps him away 359.
- Purple Demon Eye: Prepares to use it during the Black Gorilla encounter. Gu Yuena also extracts this technique from his otherworld knowledge 337 364.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Among the techniques Gu Yuena reproduces from his knowledge; its use by Tang San is not demonstrated in the supplied passages 337.
- Hidden weapons: Considers combining them with control abilities. Later, while confronting Chen Jianjun, he wishes he had hidden weapons available 363 438.
Divine Protection and Fortune
Tang San’s early survival depends heavily on arrangements made by the Asura God rather than his own combat strength 311 322 323.
- Fortune: His soul arrives carrying two strands of luck, including protection associated with the Asura God 311 393 395.
- Emergency defense: A dark-crimson flash from the newborn Tang San breaks Qian Xunji’s attack and injures him 322.
- Emergency escape: The Asura God’s contingency transports Tang San and Tang Hao to Holy Soul Village 323.
- Destined connections: The Asura God arranges Xiao Wu as a destined match. Xu Xiao later discovers a second red thread connecting Tang San to Qian Renxue and suspects another arranged pairing 323 336.
- Loss of protection: Yu Xiaogang’s exploitation leaves Tang San with only one-fifth of his luck. Xu Xiao eventually removes the final fragment 371 393.
Heaven-Abandoned Person
After losing the Asura God’s remaining fortune, Tang San becomes someone the continent itself turns against 393.
- A lightning strike destroys his building and leaves him badly burned; moments later, a fall onto a wooden stake injures his eye 393.
- Ordinary actions become hazardous: he repeatedly bites his tongue, falls from his wheelchair, and is accidentally thrown overboard 411 412.
- His misfortune drives the group’s ship off course, inadvertently preventing pursuers searching the expected route from finding them 426.
- His companions mistakenly interpret these incidents as a test imposed by the Sea God 411 412.
Background / History
Reincarnation and Birth
The Asura God selects Tang Hao’s family as the vessel for his inheritance and sends Tang San’s sealed soul into Hei Xing’s unborn child. The child’s parentage is also shaped by Xu Xiao’s earlier schemes: the Evil Emperor’s interference makes Tang Hao infatuated with Hei Xing 311 321.
Tang San is born while his parents are being pursued by Qian Xunji. Divine protection saves him and Tang Hao, but Hei Xing is left behind and captured by Spirit Hall. The escape deposits father and son in Holy Soul Village, where the Asura God has arranged for Tang San to encounter Xiao Wu 321 322 323.
Holy Soul Village and Awakening
After the Clear Sky Sect expels Tang Hao, he returns to Holy Soul Village with Tang San and vows to raise him against Spirit Hall. Tang San is already conscious of these events, and hatred of Spirit Hall takes root in him 326.
The villagers help raise him while Tang Hao lives as a drunken blacksmith. Despite mockery from other children, Old Jack defends Tang San and supports his education. Su Yuntao’s discovery of Innate Full Soul Power earns him an invitation to Chuan Ling, but Tang Hao forbids attendance at either Chuan Ling or Spirit Hall. Tang San instead chooses Nording Academy 348 349 350.
Nording Academy and Prolonged Abuse
On the journey to Nording, Xu Xiao plants an obsession with becoming a eunuch in Tang San’s mind. Xiao Wu’s insults reinforce the suggestion, and Tang San castrates himself that night 353 354.
At the academy, Yu Xiaogang claims to have deduced his Twin Martial Souls and gains his trust as a teacher. In reality, the Rakshasa God has identified the Asura God’s aura within Tang San, and Yu Xiaogang intends to exploit his fortune 358 359.
Xiao Wu attacks Tang San because she blames Tang Hao for her family’s suffering. Her hatred is based on deeds Xu Xiao committed using Tang Hao’s identity. She breaks Tang San’s leg, later conspires with Yu Xiaogang, and sends Black Gorillas after the pair during their soul hunt 351 352 360 362 364.
Ah Rou subsequently crushes both his legs. Over the following six years, Xiao Wu and Yu Xiaogang continue tormenting him, while his Soul Power rises only to Rank 25 371 375.
Loss of Fortune and the Sea Voyage
Xu Xiao finds Tang San at Monster Academy and removes his last remaining fortune, turning him into a Heaven-Abandoned Person. The Asura God responds by arranging for him to inherit both his own position and the Sea God’s, hoping that proximity to Xiao Wu and the Angel God’s successor will replenish his luck 393 395.
Tang Xiao retrieves Tang San and takes him to sea with their relatives and allies. During the voyage, he explains that Hei Xing is imprisoned in Spirit Hall and identifies Spirit Hall and Chuan Ling as Tang San’s enemies. Tang San’s worsening accidents force the group to supervise him closely 402 411 412.
Return to Vast Sea City
Xiao Bai intercepts the group under a false Sea God oracle and brings them back to Vast Sea City. Xu Xiao’s disguised divine barrier protects their ship but traps them offshore while Spirit Hall kills captured members of the Clear Sky Sect and Blue Lightning clan 427 428.
Tang Xiao ultimately chooses Tang San’s survival over the captives, declaring that Tang San will avenge them after becoming a god. Xu Xiao observes that Tang San already resents his uncle 430.
Slaughter City and the Planned Murder of Yu Xiaogang
After discovering that Sea God Island has vanished, the Sea God directs Tang San to seek his inheritance in Slaughter City. Before entering, Tang San agrees to delay rescuing Tang Hao until after becoming a god, provoking Tang Zhan’s condemnation 433 440.
Inside Slaughter City, the Sea God delivers his trial and explains the condition attached to a second god’s inheritance. Tang San agrees to kill Yu Xiaogang. He later secures Tang Zhan’s cooperation while pretending to be anguished at betraying his teacher, and plans to retrieve the Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud from the Heaven Dou Imperial Family after leaving the city 452 454.
