Background / History

The Emperor is a Perpetual who spent an exceptionally long life living among humanity, accumulating knowledge, wisdom, psychic mastery, and genetic expertise. During humanity's collapse in the 30K era, he emerged on Terra to end the wars of the techno-barbarians and warlords, using the genetically engineered Thunder Warriors to begin unification. 7

Recognizing that the Thunder Warriors could not serve as the force needed for galactic reconquest, he turned to the Warp despite understanding its dangers. He personally negotiated with the Four Chaos Gods, receiving twenty-one lesser god-shards—including an anomalous red soul—as raw material for a greater plan. 7 8

With Erda's genetic material, Warp rituals, and his own psychic essence, the Emperor created twenty-one Primarchs: beings designed from minor Warp-deity souls housed in human genetic vessels. He intended to use their gene-seed to produce mass-deployable superhuman warriors, later naming them the “Angels of Death.” 9 12

The final red soul, later identified with the Doom Slayer's essence, received no imposed traits or obligations from him; the Emperor granted it only “freedom.” Its gene-seed proved uniquely free of visible Warp corruption, though attempts to implant it into ordinary candidates initially killed every subject. 10 12 36

Erda destroyed the laboratory's psychic barrier and released the Primarchs into a Warp storm. The Emperor confronted the Four Chaos Gods directly, invoking their contract to break their interference and scattering the Primarchs across the galaxy rather than allowing Chaos to control them. 16 17

After observing Li Tang's successful implantation of the Twenty-First Primarch's gene-seed and witnessing visions of the Doom Slayer, the Emperor became convinced that humanity had new hope beyond his universe. He ordered all three hundred available gene-seeds activated, accepting an immense death toll to create viable warriors. 39 40 41
