Background / History

Erda had existed on ancient Terra since humanity first entered civilization. Like other Perpetuals, she lived among ordinary humans across history, quietly guarding and guiding human development. Her Perpetual nature granted her an effectively eternal lifespan and the ability to return to her prime after death. 8 13

She knew the Emperor from the distant past, and the two were once exceptionally close. When he began the Unification Wars, she supported his plan to restore humanity: advising him, persuading city-states to surrender, and helping defeat resistant enemies. She later helped establish the framework of the nascent Imperium. 8

Erda and the Emperor supplied genetic material for the Primarch project, combining it with the Emperor's essence, Warp energy, and the souls held within the incubation tanks. Though she had never considered herself suited to motherhood, she developed a powerful attachment to the children created from her blood. 9 10

After the extraction weakened her, Chaos power entered her soul. The Warp tormented her with visions in which the Emperor enslaved the Primarchs, turned them into weapons, and ultimately led them into a galactic war of kin-slaying. Though she recognized that the visions might be deception, they drove her to seek the Primarchs' freedom. 10 11

Erda is compassionate, dignified, and deeply protective of humanity's knowledge and civilization. She despises the brutality of the Thunder Warriors, regarding their destruction of Golden Age relics and their planned disposal as evidence of the Emperor's ruthlessness. 14

Her greatest vulnerability is the maternal love she develops for the Primarchs. Chaos exploits that love through visions and psychological pressure, turning her distrust of the Emperor into a resolve to free the children from his control. Even after realizing the scale of the consequences, she refuses to regard the Primarchs as mere Imperial assets. 11 17

She is also calculating and resilient. Erda conceals her intentions from Malcador, exploits the Custodes assigned to surveil her, restores herself through Perpetual rebirth, and prepares ancient technology for her assault on the laboratory. 12 13 14

Chaos enters Erda's weakened soul and feeds her visions of the Primarchs becoming enslaved weapons and eventually slaughtering one another. She resolves to remove them from the Emperor before that future can occur. 10 11

Assault on the Imperial Laboratory

Under Custodes surveillance, Erda restores herself through death and rebirth, retrieves relics from a secret desert base, and returns to the laboratory. When Malcador's guards bar her entry, she activates her temporal weapon and summons Iron Men and Extermination Automata to force a path through the defenders. 13 14 15

Scattering of the Primarchs

At the incubation chambers, Erda destroys the Emperor's psychic barrier with the empowered bronze dagger. A Warp storm carries the Primarch incubation pods away, leaving the Emperor to search the Warp and scatter them across the galaxy beyond the Chaos Gods' immediate grasp. 16 17

Afterward, Erda tells Malcador that she gave her children freedom because they were not meant to be war machines. Rejecting his view that every person in the Imperium is an asset, she leaves the laboratory to face an uncertain future. 17
