History
More than a decade before the siege of Guardian Domain, a meteor-like object penetrated Nul's planetary barrier. Soon afterward, isolated settlements reported attacks by a previously unknown green-skinned species, which Nul's warriors named Orks—“beastmen” in an ancient Terran language. 18
Humanity initially dismissed the Orks as mindless beasts and drove back their early raids with surviving Old Night weaponry. This proved disastrous: their numbers increased tenfold or even a hundredfold after losses, their weapons improved with each battle, and increasingly large, intelligent individuals emerged among them. 18
Under a nearly seven-meter Warboss, the Nul Orks avoided major human forces, exhausted them through raids, and steadily captured territory. After a three-year siege, millions surrounded Guardian Domain and nearly destroyed its defenders. 18 19
The arrival of Doom Norwick’s incubation pod annihilated the Warboss and much of the besieging army. Without command, the surviving Orks scattered, fought one another, and became vulnerable to a sustained human purge. 20 21
As Warlord, Doom used his knowledge of Ork behavior to herd roughly seventy thousand scattered Orks into a designated battlefield. He arranged a staged duel that elevated the runt Gu Ya into a Boss, drawing more Orks toward him through their shared psychic field. 47 49
Doom then maintained a six-month containment war: Night Watchers depleted the Orks, the Core Forge eradicated spores outside the war zone, and Gu Ya was prevented from growing beyond four meters or escaping the trap. 50
Appearance
Orks are green-skinned, fanged humanoids with thick limbs, muscular bodies, and a visibly warlike bearing. Their appearance and size vary greatly, from scrawny runts to enormous Bosses. 18 19 49
- Ordinary Orks are described as hideous, green-skinned, and heavily built, often armed with scavenged metal, improvised blades, or their own teeth. 18
- A Special Ops Boy stood approximately 2.3 meters tall, with a stocky, muscular body, bulging veins, crimson eyes, and grass-green skin. 24
- The Warboss who besieged Guardian Domain stood nearly seven meters tall and wore mismatched red-painted armor. 19
- Gu Ya began as a shriveled, malnourished runt with coarse hair, cracked teeth, and withered limbs before growing into a Boss through Ork belief. 49
Biology and Society
- Spore-based reproduction — Orks are born from spores “like mushrooms.” The first forms to emerge are runts, which later attach themselves to Ork boys and occupy the bottom of Ork society. 49
- Rapid multiplication — Killing one group can be followed by attacks from ten or even a hundred times as many Orks. 18
- Combat-centered culture — Orks value fighting above all else; captured Orks treated a deathmatch between Doom and a Special Ops Boy as entertainment regardless of which side survived. 24 25
- Boss hierarchy — Orks gather around powerful leaders. A Boss’s emergence can spread through their psychic field and draw distant Orks to its position. 49
- Runts — Runts are instinctively timid scavengers and are despised by other Orks as symbols of cowardice. 49
- Phototropic behavior — Doom identifies Orks as creatures that seek light sources in darkness, which he exploits by using Gu Ya’s stronghold as a “lighthouse” for migrating Orks. 50
Abilities & Characteristics
Collective Idealistic Field
Orks generate a shared field that can distort physical laws when enough of them gather and agree on the same idea. 29 48
- Their consensus allows scrap-built vehicles and war machines to function despite appearing unusable by human standards. 48
- Ork vehicles painted red are observed to move faster and more persistently. 48
- Collective belief can empower an individual: after the Orks accepted Gu Ya as Boss, his body rapidly enlarged. 49
- Their field cannot effectively use Nul Crystal, which Orks regard as worthless stones; this prevents them from properly copying the Night Watchers’ crystal-based weapons. 48
Combat Adaptation
Orks rapidly improve as a fighting force through warfare, reproduction, and the emergence of stronger leaders. 18
- Their weapons became more advanced over the course of the Nul war. 18
- Some Orks developed abnormal size and intelligence, including the Warboss whose raids and attritional strategy defeated humanity’s initial expectations. 18
- Orks can construct weapons, armor, and war machines from nearly any scrap material. 48
- They can understand human speech after prolonged conflict and show enthusiasm for displays of martial strength. 23 25
Faith in Gork and Mork
Orks worship Gork and Mork, described in their beliefs as “Gork is cunning but brutal” and “Mork is brutal but cunning.” 45
- Orks attribute seemingly impossible victories or feats to the intervention of Gork and Mork. 49
- Their religious excitement can intensify their collective field, as seen when they accepted Gu Ya’s staged victory as divine favor. 49
- Doom learns of Gork and Mork by consuming Ork brain tissue and accessing the victim’s memories. 45
Equipment
- Scavenged weapons — Iron scraps, improvised swords, and crude melee weapons. 18
- Siege engines — Millions of Orks deployed dense formations of siege weapons outside Guardian Domain. 19
- Junk war machines — Vehicles and armor assembled from scrap but animated by the Orks’ idealistic field. 48
- Warboss equipment — The Nul Warboss carried a massive power claw and two human firearms welded together on his armor. 19
Notable Individuals
- Nul Warboss — Nearly seven-meter Ork leader whose raids, evasion of major battles, and attritional strategy drove humanity to the brink of defeat; killed when Doom’s pod struck his army. 18 19 20
- Gu Ya — A cowardly runt artificially elevated into a Boss through Doom’s staged duel and the Orks’ collective belief; became the focal point for Orks gathering across Nul. 49 50
- Special Ops Boy — A powerful captive Ork selected by Doom for a deathmatch; Doom killed it with one kick that broke its leg and one punch through the head. 24 25
Relationships
- Gork and Mork — The gods worshipped by Orks; their supposed blessing is invoked to explain extraordinary Ork feats. 45 49
- Doom Norwick — Principal human opponent during the later Nul campaign; he exploited Ork biology, belief, and Boss hierarchy to contain and exterminate them. 45 47 50
- Night Watchers — Nul’s warrior force and the Orks’ principal battlefield enemy during the siege and subsequent purge. 18 19 50
- Gu Ya — Boss created through Ork belief, whose rise caused surviving Orks to converge on Doom’s designated war zone. 49 50
