Nature & Properties

Property Description
Emotional reflection The Warp reflects the emotions of sentient beings in the material universe; these emotions manifest as pure, overwhelmingly intense energy. 1
Souls It is the destination of cosmic beings’ souls after death. Before its corruption, souls could rest there peacefully. 1
Time and space Linear time and spatial distance have no meaning within the Warp; events are described only as occurring in “the now.” 1 5
Emotional energy Violent feelings, thoughts, and souls collide into vortices and storms, becoming power within the Sea of Souls. 1
Corruption Souls entering the polluted Warp can be twisted, stripped of their original essence, and corrupted by accumulated extreme emotions. 1
Reality breaches Extreme emotion in the material universe can provoke Warp rifts, allowing Dark Gods’ minions to cross into reality. 1
Psychic conduit Psykers draw Warp energy to alter physical laws, but doing so makes their souls shine in the Warp and attracts daemons. 5
Material suppression Warp entities and divine power are weakened by the laws of physics when manifested in the material universe. 8 11
Contracts and rituals Despite its instability, the Warp recognizes binding contracts and rituals; the Emperor invokes his covenant with the Four Chaos Gods to obstruct their actions. 6 17

History

The Sea of Souls was once calm and unpolluted, serving as a place of rest for sentient souls. A galaxy-spanning war between two hegemonic races filled it with the resentment and agony of trillions of dead, permanently contaminating the realm. Extreme emotions and corrupted souls eventually converged into singular ideologies, giving rise to the Dark Gods. 1

The Aeldari Empire’s decline further destabilized the Warp. The race’s galaxy-wide depravity generated immense emotional storms, culminating in the birth of Slaanesh. Slaanesh’s first cry tore a rift through the Aeldari Empire and swallowed much of its territory into the Warp. 5

Long before the main events on Nul, the Emperor entered the Warp to bargain with the Four Chaos Gods. He acquired twenty-one lesser god-shards and a special red soul, then anchored them in physical vessels to create the Primarchs. 6 7 9

When Erda destroyed the Emperor’s psychic barrier, a Warp storm seized the Primarch incubation pods. The Emperor entered the Warp to contest the Chaos Gods, shattered the pods, and scattered the Primarchs across the galaxy before the gods could fully claim them. 16 17

Major Powers and Inhabitants

Chaos Four Gods

The four Chaos Gods are the dominant powers of the Warp, each formed from converged extreme emotions. They maintain a perpetual balance of hostility, cooperation, betrayal, and competition known as the Great Game. 1 7

  • Khorne — God of war and slaughter; bloodshed and conflict in the material universe feed his power. His realm contains the Brass Throne, rivers of boiling blood, magma, sulfur smoke, and endless daemon warfare. 1
  • Tzeentch — Master of Change and conspiracy; once the strongest Dark God, he was weakened when the other three united against him. He rules the ever-changing Crystal Labyrinth. 1
  • Slaanesh — Dark God born from the Aeldari’s depravity and indulgence. 5
  • Nurgle — One of the four dominant gods, associated with decay and disease. 1 4

Lesser Gods

Lesser Gods are independent Warp entities representing extreme emotions or concepts on a smaller scale than the Chaos Four. They are subordinate to the Four Gods’ power but remain necessary to the Warp’s chaotic order; removing too many would leave the emotions they embody without vessels. 6

The Four Chaos Gods hunted and refined twenty lesser gods’ divine essences as part of their transaction with the Emperor. 6

Daemons

Daemons are manifestations, servants, or fragments of the Dark Gods. They can enter reality through Warp rifts and seek souls that have fallen into extremism. 1

  • Greater Daemons — Powerful daemon servants dispatched by the Chaos Gods to guard important regions or enforce their will. 4
  • Lords of Change — Tzeentch’s powerful daemons. One, formerly named Carlos, returned from the Well of Eternity as the two-headed Fateweaver Carlos, able to view the past and future. 1

Notable Locations

Location Description
Crystal Labyrinth Tzeentch’s realm: an endlessly rearranging maze that can trap even his own daemons. 1
Well of Eternity A fountainhead formed when Tzeentch shattered the Staff of Change. Its interior resembles an endless starry sky or a gateway to another universe, and even Tzeentch cannot comprehend it. 1
Brass Fortress Khorne’s fortress at the intersection of the Four Gods’ domains, surrounded by lava, war machines, and drilling daemon legions. 6
Intersection of the Four Realms Borderland jointly occupied by the Chaos Gods. They forged a tower here to imprison the red soul. 6
Soul Tower A structure built by all four Chaos Gods, covered in limbs and sickly green branches and crowned with a brass Chaos Star burning with blue psychic fire. 6

The Red Soul

A red, perfectly pure soul fused with the essence of the Doom Slayer emerged from the Well of Eternity. Tzeentch was physically wounded when he touched it, and its power resisted scrutiny and corruption. 3

The soul absorbed free Warp energy without becoming tainted. It first reached the strength of a lesser daemon, then surpassed Greater Daemons and attained the level of a Lesser God while contained in the four gods’ tower. 4 6

Development Chapter Notes
Lesser Daemon-level strength 4 The red soul absorbs Warp energy and grows without corruption.
Lesser God-level strength 6 After ages of absorption inside the Soul Tower, it surpasses the Greater Daemons of the Four Gods.

The Four Chaos Gods regarded the soul as a potential demigod they could corrupt after it gained human thought and entered the material universe. Instead, the Emperor took it as part of his bargain and used it as the soul of the Twenty-First Primarch. 6 7 10

Role in the Primarch Scattering

  • Erda’s breach — Destroying the Emperor’s psychic barrier allowed a Warp storm to enter the Primarch laboratory and carry the incubation pods into the Empyrean. 16
  • Chaos Gods’ intervention — The Four Gods fought over the pods and attempted to direct them toward worlds they had prepared. 17
  • The Emperor’s countermeasure — The Emperor shattered the pods and used psychic power to propel the Primarchs deeper through the Warp, scattering them across the galaxy. 17
  • Twenty-First Primarch — The Twenty-First incubation pod escaped the Warp and eventually fell onto Nul, its Warp energy allowing it to penetrate the planet’s Dimensional Shield. 18 29

Relationships

  • Four Chaos Gods — The Warp’s supreme rulers, sustained by extreme emotions originating in the material universe. 1
  • Lesser Gods — Independent but lower-ranking Warp entities whose continued existence helps preserve the realm’s emotional balance. 6
  • The Emperor / Master of Mankind — Entered the Warp to bargain with the Four Gods, taking god-shards and the red soul for his Primarch project. 5 7 9
  • Erda — Destroyed the Emperor’s psychic barrier, enabling a Warp storm to seize the Primarch incubation pods. 16
  • Doom / Twenty-First Primarch — His soul’s Doom Slayer essence is uniquely resistant to Warp corruption; as he grows, Warp influence finds it increasingly difficult to touch him. 3 26
  • Tzeentch — His realm contains the Well of Eternity, from which the red soul emerged. He repeatedly schemes to understand, exploit, or corrupt its potential. 1 3 6
