Background / History
Karyl is Kael Lohars, a surviving remnant of the House of Lohars. On Nostramo, he concealed this identity while operating as the Vengeful Spirit, a feared killer targeting gangs and noble houses. His reputation was strong enough to terrify a captured Skolevok noblewoman once she learned his name. 4
Before the Great Purge, Karyl used calculated massacres and surviving witnesses to spread fear among the gangs, draw out the Skolevok Family and Tremor-Tooth, and create conditions for an ambush against the nobility. 9 11 He subsequently devastated the Silver-Winged Corpse family, killing 723 of its members in thirty minutes and confronting its last survivor, Dowager Countess Ilgana. 25 26
Karyl was apparently killed during the conflict on Nostramo, but entered The Veil instead. There he confronted an echo of a boy connected to the destruction of House Lohars and rejected its demands to relive vengeance, choosing to return. 29 After his return, he and Wraith resumed their campaign against the remaining Silver-Winged Corpse members. 30
He later became an instructor to the Eighth Legion, developing tactical doctrine from campaigns and training its warriors in combat, discipline, and psychological control. 151 175 237 Following a ten-thousand-year absence, Karyl awakened into a later era burdened by the consequences he believed his past actions had caused. 522 528
As an Inquisitor, he continues to investigate heresy, Chaos corruption, xenos activity, and violent crime. His work includes recruiting Captain Rohl into the Inquisition, destroying a Chaos-tainted statue at the Bral estate, and negotiating with Trazyn. 698 735 795
Appearance
Karyl is a tall, pale man with black hair and eyes that frequently shine with cold blue psychic light. His appearance has changed over time, becoming increasingly inhuman after his resurrection and prolonged exposure to his power. 10 104 514 522
- Pale facial features and black hair. 4 10
- Eyes that glow blue when he uses psychic abilities. 8 17 19
- Often wears a cloak, scarf, or wide-brimmed hat while working. 9 616 700
- Has at times concealed himself beneath shadows or appeared wrapped in human skin. 198 297
- Later possessed eyelidless eyes, a damaged face capable of rapid healing, and dark tattoo-like markings around his eye sockets. 514 522 568
Personality
Karyl is calm, patient, and exceptionally deliberate. He treats killing as a practical skill rather than a pleasure, yet is willing to employ terror, mass violence, and ruthless interrogation against those he judges deserving. 9 11 616 He places great value on individual thought and openly despises passive obedience. 86
Despite his severity, Karyl is protective toward those under his care. He mentors Wraith with patience, apologizes when he causes him distress, and consistently encourages him to think and act independently. 12 17 22 He also shows empathy toward ordinary people, such as buying breakfast for Haide and offering Rohl a path away from guilt and isolation. 616 795
Karyl is distrustful of easy answers, including his own power. He repeatedly restrains abilities that demand a price or feed on blood, hatred, and vengeance. 31 249 275 His sense of responsibility is immense, but he recognizes it as a form of arrogance that can isolate him from others. 62
