Background and History
Lorgar grew up on Colchis under Kor Phaeron, his foster father. Colchis’s religious traditions shaped his belief that the Emperor was a god. During the Great Crusade, Lorgar favored bringing worlds into the Imperium through preaching rather than bloodshed. The Word Bearers’ approach won deep loyalty while minimizing casualties, but its pace brought him into public disagreement with Roboute Guilliman 252 693 794.
Early encounters with his brothers show Lorgar’s warmth and the limits of his tolerance. Before meeting the newly discovered Konrad Curze, he said he would love Curze regardless of what he was like. His religious convictions, however, fueled a confrontation with Kael Lohars on Nostramo; Lorgar later acknowledged that he had insulted Curze’s foster father 35 43 45 300.
During the campaign against the Laer, Lorgar was awestruck by a xenos temple and ashamed of his reaction. He led the Word Bearers in an assault upon it, then entered after Kor Phaeron encouraged him to do so. Inside, he found a floor made from living, mutilated Laer bodies and resolved to destroy the temple. Ferrus Manus’s gift, Illuminarum, was his weapon during the attack 252 253.
Lorgar’s faith was shaken when the Emperor told him directly that he had never asked to be worshipped. His brothers subsequently grew concerned as Lorgar withdrew from them and the Word Bearers abandoned their former restraint. In the Warp, Lorgar told Argel Tal that Erebus had stabbed him in the back and made him a puppet. He chose to save Argel Tal rather than remain hidden from those seeking his submission 268 280 290 300.
Appearance
Lorgar is a golden-skinned giant whose skin bears thousands of golden symbols. His radiance can visibly illuminate his surroundings 35 247.
- Distinctive features — Golden skin and densely etched symbols 35.
- Early attire — A robe, with a thick tome kept beside him 35.
- Later body — The Lorgar-shaped shell controlled by Chaos is not presented as the original Lorgar: its spirit has been devoured, and nightmare creatures move beneath its skin 380 381.
Personality
Lorgar was remembered as warm, attentive, and kind to people regardless of their standing. He took care with his brothers’ needs and preferences, and Guilliman respected him despite rejecting his faith. Religion was a notable point on which Lorgar was less willing to overlook disagreement 133 794.
He was also a gifted orator. His preaching persuaded worlds to join the Imperium, and his calls to the Word Bearers could unite their fighting spirit. His conviction could become fanaticism: on Laer, shame at admiring the temple fed his fury toward its inhabitants 252 290.
Abilities and Skills
Oratory and Conversion
Lorgar’s greatest documented strength as a commander was persuasion rather than military planning 251 290.
- Brought worlds into the Imperium through debate and preaching 290.
- Led the Word Bearers in a policy of avoiding bloodshed where possible 794.
- Inspired a coordinated, fervent assault with his battlefield address on Laer 252.
Primarch Strength and Combat
Lorgar possesses a primarch’s formidable physique and fights with Illuminarum 252.
- Slew several Laer with one blow, using the weapon’s weight and his own strength without activating its Displacer Field 252.
- Fulgrim considered his military talent less outstanding than his speaking ability 251.
Radiance and Psychic Power
Lorgar’s radiance is visible on his body; later events also establish that psychic power belonged to him 247 511.
- In the Warp, his radiance brightened as he gave himself up to save Argel Tal 300.
- His blood was used to revive entombed Word Bearers 307.
- Erebus later seized Lorgar’s hollow shell and accessed power associated with his primarch body. The shell’s sorcery should not be mistaken for Lorgar acting freely 509 511.
Equipment and Items
- Illuminarum — A power maul forged and gifted by Ferrus Manus; it has a Displacer Field 252.
- Golden-covered tome — Carried at his waist during the Laer assault 252.
Relationships
- The Emperor — Father and object of Lorgar’s worship; the Emperor’s rejection of that worship devastated him 253 268.
- Kor Phaeron — Foster father and Word Bearers First Captain. Lorgar arranged augmentations that allowed him to wear Legion power armor; Kor Phaeron later helped draw Lorgar into the Laer temple 252 268.
- Argel Tal — Word Bearer son whom Lorgar saved in the Warp, urging him to remember who he truly was 300.

- Sanguinius — Brother who offered support when Lorgar struggled with his later responsibilities in the Ecclesiarchy 850.
Later Story Role
- The counterfeit — A Chaos-controlled shell bearing Lorgar’s face fought Vulkan and Perturabo on Macragge. Guilliman later fought and defeated a Lorgar impostor on Terra. Other characters explicitly distinguished this body from the real Lorgar 380 382 459.
- Recovery — A tormented creature bearing Lorgar’s face was later held beneath the red sands. Angron said it recognized him, apologized repeatedly when awake, and showed regret 769.
- Choice and return — Confronted with memories of Colchis and of those who had continued fighting for him, Lorgar grieved for the innocents he had killed and the control he had endured. He was offered a choice between hatred and love 793.
- Ecclesiarchy — Later, Lorgar struggled with his role in its reform and felt disconnected from the people he served. He came to accept his role as Ecclesiarch; when his body died in his sleep, his spirit ascended into the Warp 850 874.
