Background & History

Awakening on Nostramo

Konrad was originally known as the Night Haunter or Wraith. After Karyl sacrificed himself to drive back the darkness beyond the Veil, a mysterious voice addressed Wraith as “Konrad Curze” and told him to take Karyl’s hand. Konrad initially rejected the name, insisting it was not his own. 27 29

Karyl had brought him out of Nostramo’s underground mines and acted as his adoptive father, teacher, and moral anchor. The two had hunted criminals together through Nostramo’s hive cities, but Karyl’s guidance kept Konrad from becoming the feral killer he believed he might otherwise have been. 138 175 266

During the Great Purge, Konrad suffered overwhelming visions associated with his feared prophetic gift. The visions left him catatonic and vulnerable to a violent inner presence, but he forced himself back to his feet and travelled to Nostramo to reach Karyl. 59 61

Education and Recognition

After meeting his brothers, Konrad studied Imperial governance under Fulgrim. He absorbed information with exceptional focus, memorizing political concepts even before he fully understood them. 44 48 66

Ferrus Manus recognized the quality of Konrad’s knife and arranged for an appropriate hilt to be made, with Fulgrim involved in its craftsmanship. 53 58

Master of the Eighth Legion

Konrad arrived aboard the Nightfall and met the Eighth Legion—twenty thousand warriors he had never expected to call his sons. He addressed them, inspected them, and resolved to meet every Legionary individually so that he could remember each face and name. 66 67

He assumed command of the Legion without opposition. Rather than treating its history as an abstraction, he reflected on the sacrifices its warriors had made before meeting him and accepted the administrative burden of leading it. 72

Konrad regarded recruitment as an urgent necessity because the Eighth Legion’s strength was low relative to the other Legions. He considered Terra and Nostramo as recruitment grounds, then conscripted Karyl as the Legion’s combat instructor. 73 74

He sought to redefine the Legion’s purpose: fear was a means of enforcement, not an end in itself. He wanted his warriors to understand why the Eighth Legion fought rather than become consumed by terror tactics. 74

Harkosus War

Before departing for Harkosus, Konrad accepted artificer power armor forged by the Emperor. Wearing it brought him face-to-face with his identity as a weapon of killing, punishment, and justice; it also triggered the return of his sealed visions. 149

On Harkosus I, he led the Eighth Legion against heavily armed defenders, mechanical war machines, and a city that revealed itself to be something monstrous. He moved through the battle ahead of his Legion, destroying war machines with single blows and coordinating precise follow-up fire from his sons. 152 157

The campaign made him understand war as a discipline requiring calculated violence and the suppression of humanity. He found no satisfaction in that understanding and became increasingly cold on the battlefield. 157

Death and Resurrection

Konrad was devastated when Kael Lohars died. He held Kael’s skeleton in shock and resisted a voice that offered to restore his father if he made a wish. 124

He nevertheless became determined to uncover the force responsible for Kael’s death and declared that he would become “the one who hunts monsters.” 127

Konrad later returned from death as a moving, speaking skeleton. He described this return as a covenant, not divine salvation, and acknowledged that the influence beyond the Veil still affected him. 128

Later Existence

After his physical death, Konrad continued to appear as the Ghost or Night Haunter. He retained ties to the Nightfall, communicated with its AI, and rejoined Jago Sevatarion for warfare in a deathly Warp wasteland. 727

He encountered Calistarius within a Warp cemetery, identified him by the future name “Mephiston,” and offered him a means to refuse death through a stone coffin. 597 598

Appearance

Konrad is a tall, pale Primarch whose beauty is deliberately made unsettling by his bearing, mannerisms, and association with darkness. In life, he often dressed in black robes or artificer armor; after resurrection, he can manifest as a skeletal or ghostlike figure. 128 175

Konrad is intensely observant, earnest, and diligent. As a young Primarch, he relied heavily on Karyl’s judgment, studied with unusual discipline, and took the responsibility of leading the Eighth Legion seriously enough to memorize every Legionary’s name. 39 66 67

He possesses a strong but unstable moral instinct. He distinguishes between justice and cruelty, objects to indiscriminate slaughter, and insists that fear should remain a tool rather than the Legion’s purpose. Yet he also accepts himself as an executioner and can become chillingly detached once violence begins. 74 155 521

Konrad struggles to process grief, affection, and kindness. Karyl’s apparent deaths repeatedly leave him frightened or furious, while the Lion’s mercy in battle confuses and angers him. 29 124 670
