Background / History
Lion was raised on Caliban and taught speech, swordsmanship, shield use, and hunting by the knights of the Order. After being knighted, he led patrols against the Great Beasts, expanded the Order's food supply through hunting, and trained servants and farmers in those skills. Within ten years, he unified Caliban, exterminated the Great Beasts, and oversaw rapid development of its settlements and agriculture. 226 693
After the Emperor's arrival, Lion left Caliban to join the Great Crusade. He later reflected that the Emperor regarded conquest as necessary to save humanity from extinction, a burden Lion accepted while holding himself responsible for the cost. 693
During the investigation into Sergeant Trinf Raton's desertion, Lion publicly pursued the truth despite the danger it posed to Dark Angels unity. His anger over broken oaths led him to interrogate the Legion's knights on honor, humility, justice, honesty, mercy, and sacrifice. 224 225
Appearance
Lion is a towering, imposing primarch whose presence is repeatedly compared to that of a born king. In later life, his hair and beard grow long and poorly groomed, forming a mane-like silhouette; he accepts his age but dislikes seeing his own inhuman majesty reflected in mirrors. 227 617 649
- Deep green eyes; they may appear glacial or impossible blue while Leman Russ manifests through the Dionysian Spear. 617 620
- A severe, majestic face with a beard; anger visibly twists his normally controlled expression. 227
- Long hair and beard in the 40th millennium, with an aged but still formidable appearance. 617 707
- Often wears dark green and black armor with silver on the limbs and gold reliefs. 219
- His later black armor bears a roaring lion's head on the right pauldron. 667
Personality
Lion is controlled, proud, and intensely rational, but his restraint contains immense fury. He regards honor as meaningless without genuine virtue, rejecting empty titles in favor of justice, honesty, mercy, and sacrifice. 225 669
He is a natural hunter and commander who acts decisively once he has chosen a course. In combat, his calm often conceals violence rather than peace; when he draws his sword, he commits fully. 649 667 669
Ten thousand years after Caliban's fall, Lion shows greater caution and empathy toward those who fled him. He recognizes that his appearance can provoke fear and refuses to risk civilian lives merely to force a confrontation with the Fallen. He also reforms Dark Angels recruitment and opposes replacing reason entirely with fanatic faith. 618
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Physiology
Lion possesses the physical resilience and strength of a primarch, including two hearts and the ability to remain active after wounds that would kill ordinary humans many times over. 468 674 676
- Endured severe internal injuries, blood loss, and shattered bones while continuing to fight. 674 676
- Can move and strike with speed beyond Astartes perception. 441
- Maintains exceptional sensory awareness, using scent, silence, terrain, and minute physical evidence to assess threats. 219 618 668
Master Swordsman
Lion is an elite knightly swordsman trained by Luther. His style combines exact timing, overwhelming force, and a willingness to finish a fight once force becomes necessary. 667
- Killed elite traitors and daemonic mutants with rapid, precise sword strikes during the battle for Terra. 441
- Fought Horus Lupercal directly and damaged his armor with the Lion Sword. 425
- Defeated Seraphax's Lord of Change despite firestorms, summoned weapons, and Warp corruption. 653
- Retains his tactical cunning while wounded, using apparent weakness to gain an opening against his younger self. 674
Hunter's Instincts and Forest-Walking
Lion can move through forests with near-supernatural stealth and possesses a gift connected to a strange forest-path realm. He has used variations of this power to lead armies and individuals from one location to another. 441 649 669
- Crossed roughly two hundred meters in a single step during the battle on Terra. 441
- Can become nearly indistinguishable from his surroundings and traverse dense woodland without alerting animals or enemies. 649 651
- Brought Azrael through an abrupt spatial transition from a woodland path to a dark alley on Banjo-1. 618
- Avoided using this ability after being sent into Caliban's past, fearing unknown consequences. 649
- Learns that the gift is not exclusive to him. 669
Resistance to Sorcery and Mental Intrusion
Lion has learned occult knowledge and resistance techniques that allow him to oppose psychic manipulation and Warp entities. 649
- Forced Seraphax from his mind by using disciplined mental constructs. 649
- Continued fighting after a Lord of Change's smoke-like corruption entered his body. 653
- Resisted the daemon's assaults long enough to kill its manifested form and press his attack on Seraphax. 653
Command and Investigation
Lion combines battlefield command with a harsh but deliberate pursuit of justice. 224 430 645
- Ordered a public inquiry into the deserter case and summoned the responsible officers for interrogation. 224
- Led the Dark Angels toward the Astronomican while setting the objectives of exterminating enemy forces and advancing on the beacon. 430
- Personally judges betrayal on Kamas while allowing civilian officials broad autonomy until they abuse their authority. 645
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Lion Sword — Lion's signature broad sword; used against Horus, Seraphax, daemons, traitors, and Great Beasts. 425 649 653
- Dionysian Spear — A reality-defying spear associated with Leman Russ; its reflective surface can show Russ, and it allows Russ to manifest through Lion's body. 618 620 621
- Dark Angels power armor — Dark green and black with silver limbs and golden reliefs; Lion considers its ceremonial magnificence more burdensome than useful. 219
- Black knightly armor — Later armor marked with a roaring lion's head on the right pauldron. 667
- Reason's Edge — Lion's personally named battleship, intended as a reminder to his Chapter not to abandon reason for blind faith. 618
Relationships
- Luther — Lion's mentor, comrade, and former Calibanite knight. Luther trained him in swordsmanship and ultimately undertook an impossible mission to protect Lion across history; Lion mourns Luther after learning the truth. 226 667 707
- Leman Russ — Brother, rival, adviser, and recurring companion through the Dionysian Spear. Their relationship mixes constant arguments with cooperation, including Russ's role in Lion's resurrection. 618 640 695
- Azrael — Lion's son and trusted young Dark Angel. Lion values Azrael's intelligence and fighting skill, protects him in battle, and brings him to Banjo-1 despite the risk. 618
- Zabriel — Fallen Dark Angel whom Lion treats patiently after his capture. Lion explains that he executes only the irredeemably corrupted, then offers Zabriel and other exiles a chance to return and hunt Caliban's true criminals. 636 640
- Asmodai — Impulsive son whose repeated readiness to shoot first frustrates Lion. Lion criticizes his lack of investigation but recognizes that he was shaped by the era's suffering. 618 638
- Konrad Curze — Brother with whom Lion has a tense but complex bond. Lion initially embraces Curze to assess him, and later refuses to kill him despite being grievously wounded. 219 670
- The Emperor — Lion's creator and father. The Emperor offers him a second chance after his death, but Lion initially refuses it, believing the cost too great. 649 694
- Seraphax — A traitorous son and sorcerer who attempts to alter the past by preventing the Caliban Uprising. Lion pursues and duels him through the events of the Belated Judgment. 649 653
- Kael Lohars — An ally who assists Lion's investigations, helps him enter Haide's memories, and records the Judgment of the exiled Calibanite knights. 626 640
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Deserter Investigation
Lion receives Konrad Curze and Karyl on Caliban during their inquiry into Dark Angels conduct. Though suspicious and dismissive of Karyl, he allows the investigation to proceed. When evidence reveals deeper betrayal, he chooses public scrutiny over preserving the Legion's comfort. 219 224
His judgment of the knights emphasizes that the Dark Angels' identity must rest on virtue rather than claims of honor. Luther's sacrifice and deception leave Lion furious and increasingly concerned by the suspicion spreading among his sons. 225 226
The Battle for Terra
Lion joins the loyalist defense of Terra, orders his forces toward the failing Astronomican, and hunts alongside the Space Wolves as their Chieftain. 430
He attacks Horus in an attempt to save the dying Russ, then carries Russ to safety through the forest-path realm. 425 427 Later, Lion tears through traitor elites and daemonic forces while advancing on the Astronomican. 441
Return and Reformation
In the 40th millennium, Lion hunts the Fallen while distinguishing between those corrupted by Chaos and those who may still be redeemed. He rejects an assumption that a cipher-key came from an irredeemable Fallen, then goes personally to meet the surrendering sinner on Banjo-1. 617 636
Lion reforms Dark Angels selection practices, abolishes the old Inner Circle system, and recruits from Caliban while retaining failed aspirants as serfs. He seeks to prevent the Legion from repeating its ancient tragedy. 618
The Belated Judgment
Lion investigates the Thousand Eyes rebellion and a corrupted vertebral artifact connected to dark sorcery. Rather than immediately destroy the artifact, he orders its origins investigated and uses a calculated trap at Kamas. 644 645
Seraphax sends Lion and his guards into Caliban's past through a mirror. There, Lion reunites with the Risen, confronts the consequences of the Caliban Uprising, and battles Seraphax and his Lord of Change. 647 649 653
Death, Resurrection, and Aftermath
After defeating an arrogant younger version of himself at catastrophic physical cost, Lion dies in the desert. 674 676 Mortarion later reveals that Russ saved him, and an exorcism on Fenris is used to return Lion's soul to his body. 695
Following his resurrection, Lion defeats Ouroboros, executes a traitorous Dark Angel, and fulfills his oath to remember and mourn Luther. 707
Notable Quotes
“Justice, honesty, mercy, sacrifice. Seven virtues—seven virtues so often spoken of, yet never demanded that every person truly abide by them.” 225
“The true criminals, the true murderers, still roam free. Therefore, I hereby call you back into the Legion, to hunt them alongside me.” 640
“Aside from those who are truly guilty, no one should have to give their life for my mistakes again.” 618
“Knight is nothing more than a dead title. Anyone—even morally bankrupt scum—can become a knight. Compared to true virtue and justice, honor is merely a wisp of smoke.” 669
Trivia
- Lion regards his magnificent ceremonial armor as a “shackle” because it offers him little practical use despite the labor Caliban devoted to forging it. 219
- He calls Corswain “Ak” when they are alone. 226
- Lion has lost an annual hunt against the wolves sixteen consecutive times. 618
- He once unknowingly used an insulting Nostraman gang gesture against Jago Sevatarion after being misled by Russ. 640
