Background / History

Early Brotherhood and Konrad Curze

Fulgrim initially argued that the newly found Konrad Curze should not be judged by the standards applied to older primarchs, stressing that Curze was only a year and a half old and still finding his footing on Nostramo. He nevertheless agreed that responsibility was essential. 35

He became Curze's first instructor aboard The Emperor's Dream, teaching him foundational Imperial knowledge, politics, duty, trade, recruitment, environmental restoration, and the limits of a primarch's role as a planetary governor. Fulgrim compiled a handmade instructional book for the lessons and gave Curze a pendant from Terra. 46 48 56

Laer Campaign

Fulgrim commanded the combined Emperor's Children, Word Bearers, and Midnight Blade forces during the Laer campaign. He assigned the Word Bearers to the frontal assault, the Midnight Blade to a rear decapitation strike, and the Emperor's Children to an aerial offensive; under his command, the three forces nearly engulfed the Laer world in fire within two days. 251 252

During the campaign, Fabius Bile presented Fulgrim with evidence that the Laer had been genetically altered. Fulgrim sharply rejected Fabius's comparison between xenos modifications and Astartes gene-seed, regarding the analogy as an insult to the Emperor's work. 250

Horus's Betrayal and Imprisonment

Horus grievously wounded Fulgrim and left Fabius unable to heal him. Horus then ordered the Emperor's Children to fight one another as supposed “sacrifices” for their primarch's recovery. 326

Trapped in a nightmarish black sea, Fulgrim was tormented by visions of Ferrus Manus, his Legion's corruption, and the slaughter of his sons. He refused to yield to the false visions even as Horus continued exploiting his condition. 328 331 334

After emerging from this ordeal, Fulgrim was consumed by guilt over the dead of his Legion. He reviewed battle reports and lists of fallen warriors as a form of self-punishment, then chose to return to Terra and report the situation to the Emperor while Angron and Corax warned Roboute Guilliman. 347

Terra and the Warp

Fulgrim fought alongside Ferrus Manus during the battle for Terra, grieving for the dead while resisting daemonic assaults. His vengeance eventually drove him into the black mist to fight alone. 411 413

His Warp corruption manifested openly during the fighting. Slaanesh identified itself as the power that had been nurturing Fulgrim, while Fulgrim was described as a daemon bearing sorrow, pain, and a desperate desire to please its creator. 418

Despite this, Fulgrim fought beside Jaghatai Khan against Mortarion's rotting shell and its servants. His combat style remained decisive and tactical; he exploited the shell's sluggishness and lack of combat intelligence rather than attempting to overpower it directly. 417

At the end of the war, the Emperor ordered Fulgrim to return to Chemos and defend humanity from there. 480

Chemos, Rebuilding, and Rebirth

By the Rebellion Tide of 379.M39, Fulgrim had reformed Chemos but admitted that his altered blood made gene-seed implantation catastrophically dangerous: fewer than one in a hundred aspirants survived. 703

When Chemos was overrun by Nurgle's forces, Fulgrim accepted new armor and a greatsword from Belisarius Cawl, naming the weapon Eternal Calamity and swearing to become the enemy's eternal calamity. 728

He faced Typhus, Scabeiathrax, and Horticulus Slimux in Chemos's depths. Even after the Flower of Despair was planted within him and he was forced to experience the agony of Emperor's Children fused into a plague-ridden mass, Fulgrim retained hope; he killed Scabeiathrax, killed Slimux, and wounded Typhus. 729 730

Fulgrim later awoke after a ten-month coma. He survived with a permanent limp and began using a cane, but approved Cawl's reconstruction plan for Chemos and accepted Ferrus Manus's help rebuilding the world and restoring his armor. 733 734

Appearance

Fulgrim is repeatedly described as an exceptionally beautiful primarch with silver-white hair, violet eyes, and an elaborate personal style. His appearance changes dramatically after his corruption and subsequent battles. 35 46 468
