First Appearance Chapter 180, Jago Sevatarion's Strange Encounter

Background

Jago Sevatarion was a fifteen-year-old orphan and mine worker from Nostramo's Quintus Third Mine. Before the Eighth Legion found him, he repeatedly experienced visions of the dead, surviving them by remaining still until they passed. 180

Kael Lohars brought Sevatar to the unfinished Midnight Blade headquarters for examination. Sevatar's caution, literacy, and ability to judge others' intentions helped him recognize Kael as a genuine representative of the Emperor's Eighth Legion. 180

During the examination, Sevatar was drawn into a vision of Nostramo's dead. He could hear their voices clearly and was nearly overwhelmed by their grief; Kael ultimately retrieved him from the realm of the dead. 181 185

Karyl offered him recruitment without promises of reward, explaining that Legion life meant harsh training, endless missions, and possible death. Sevatar joined anyway, without providing a clear reason beyond his own decision. 183

His transformation into an Astartes involved repeated surgeries and psychological ordeals. During his twentieth procedure, Konrad Curze appeared to him and foretold that Sevatar would one day remember the encounter and seek vengeance against the Word Bearers. 184 186

Appearance

Sevatar is a pale Nostraman Astartes with black eyes and a severe, intimidating presence. In later eras, his armor bears crimson patterns resembling veins or blade wounds; his face is scarred by burns, and his left eye has been replaced with a bionic implant. 180 503 519

  • Pale, ash-like complexion and pitch-black eyes associated with Nostraman ancestry. 180 701
  • Extensive facial burn scars and a bionic left eye in the Chapter era. 503
  • Wears ancient Legion-era power armor that Chapter serfs believe “feeds on light.” 578
  • His helmet is scarred and bears a deep dent in its right eyepiece. 701
  • When exerting extreme power, psychic radiance can escape from his eyes and body. 316 521

Personality

Sevatar is sharp-tongued, irreverent, and often deliberately provocative. He treats formality with contempt, mocks allies and enemies alike, and has an especially poor imitation of a friendly smile. 232 520

Beneath this flippancy is a practical commander who values speed, caution, and decisive action. He repeatedly argues against reckless advances when the enemy has overwhelming numbers or superior firepower. 249 312 462

His restraint is uneven. Sevatar is prone to acting alone, pursuing vengeance, and escalating confrontations despite orders or objections from his brothers. Kael Lohars, Mollez, Shekher Cold Soul, and Skaradrik have all criticized this tendency. 366 586 704

Over ten thousand years, he becomes outwardly patient and composed, adopting the manner of an elder and superior. His older savagery remains beneath that controlled surface, emerging when he is enraged or confronted with Erebus. 503

Abilities & Skills

Astartes Physiology

Before receiving his final implantation, Sevatar could punch through steel plating, bend steel with his grip, and move at extraordinary speed. Xianni considered him a born warrior whose physical maturation and black carapace would complete his transformation. 206

  • Possesses exceptional strength, speed, endurance, and resilience even among Astartes. 206 259
  • Continues fighting through severe injuries, including fractured joints and extensive battle wounds. 206 259
  • His reaction speed makes him an effective vanguard for his squad. 249

Psychic Talent

Sevatar's psychic gift began as visions of the dead and the ability to hear their voices. Fer Zalost described him as an unusually powerful innate psyker. 180 185 206

  • Can perceive visions, psychic disturbances, and distant events, including Sigismund's arrival aboard the Tredesia. 279
  • Can extend a psychic web of perception around a Thunderhawk to observe its surroundings. 583
  • Unsealed his power during the Battle of Calth to break Erebus's deadlock, though the released force caused his bones to creak and his body to feel as though it were breaking apart. 316
  • Fer Zalost later warned him to seal the gift again; the spell placed upon Sevatar causes enduring pain as long as it remains active. 365 503
  • After the seal is undone, his psychic power intensifies his combat ability and enables the summoning of the Soul of Night. 559 560

Melee Combat

Sevatar favors aggressive, improvised close-quarters combat. His style relies on speed, instinct, raw strength, and psychological pressure rather than orthodox swordsmanship. 231 259 535

  • Fought Kharn of the War Hounds in a formal duel, losing after underestimating him and using a weapon unsuited to his preferences. 232
  • Defeated Raven Guard sergeant Alastor Rushal in a brutal training duel despite sustaining severe injuries. 259
  • Led his squad through a Laer floating city, personally killing xenos that could tear through ceramite and move freely underwater. 249
  • Infiltrated an Ork fortress, led the destruction of its Warboss, and secured the position with his First Company squad. 270
  • Used traps, ambushes, and sabotage aboard a Word Bearers vessel before destroying its engine room. 366

Tactical Command

Sevatar combines Night Lords terror doctrine with a preference for efficient, low-waste operations. 249 270

  • Keeps squads in formation, takes point, and assigns rear security and fire-support roles during difficult assaults. 249
  • Offered tactical input to Iron Warriors Warsmith Dantioch during planning for an Ork-fortress assault. 269
  • Opposed an impulsive attack on a Word Bearers-held city during the Battle of Calth because of enemy numbers and orbital bombardment. 312
  • Coordinates multiple Night Lords successor Chapters through their Librarians during the hunt for Erebus. 503

Intimidation and Interrogation

Sevatar uses fear as both an instinct and a deliberate tool. 230 503

  • Frightens civilians and enemies for amusement or compliance. 230
  • Flayed and dissected a captured Laer after warning it of his intention. 249
  • Maintains Kairos, a Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, as a tortured captive aboard the Nightfall to extract intelligence on Erebus. 503

Equipment

  • Chain-glaive — Sevatar's signature weapon, used throughout his service in the Legion and Chapter eras. 249 578
  • Judgment — A daemon-forged glaive named by Sevatar during his rampage through the Silver Tower. 589
  • Legion-era power armor — An ancient suit of armor that remains difficult for serfs to maintain and polish. 578

  • Power sword — Wielded when entering the daemon-infested garden alongside Konrad Curze. 727

  • Konrad Curze — Primarch and paternal figure. Curze ordered Sevatar to seal his psychic power, entrusted him with Legion responsibilities, and later fought beside him against daemons. 186 279 727
  • Fer Zalost — Chief Librarian who helped examine Sevatar's gift, sealed his psychic power, and continued to warn him about its corruption. 181 365 503
  • Xianni of Terra — Swordsmanship instructor and sparring partner who recognized Sevatar's talent and encouraged him to accept command responsibility. 206 462
  • Kharn — War Hounds captain who defeated Sevatar in a duel but considered the victory undeserved because Sevatar underestimated him and used a chainsword poorly. 231 232
  • Sigismund — Imperial Fist rival whom Sevatar respects as a warrior despite disliking his calm demeanor. 231 279
  • Erebus — Long-standing Word Bearers enemy whose actions became the focus of Sevatar's vengeance across millennia. 316 503 513
  • Shen — Fellow Night Lord and brother-in-arms. Sevatar later understands Shen's departure from the Soul of Night and swears vengeance after his death. 255 559
  • Molle(z) — First Company adjutant who disapproved of Sevatar's recklessness but understood his nature; later promoted him to Captain during the fighting on Terra. 366 462
  • Skaradrik, Shekher Cold Soul, Hunter, and Kaul Sahora — Fellow Chapter Masters who serve alongside Sevatar in the later Night Lords successor alliance and frequently challenge his judgment. 520 704
