Background / History

Yuanshi knew Zhao Xuan from the period when Zhao Xuan followed Tongtian on Kunlun Mountain, before the Three Pure Ones separated. He considered Zhao Xuan meticulous and deeply calculating, but had ceased paying him much attention because Zhao Xuan kept a low profile and had not displayed exceptional cultivation talent. 8

As the Investiture of the Gods crisis approaches, Yuanshi prioritizes keeping the Chan Sect’s disciples out of the tribulation. He regards the Jie Sect’s mass recall as an attempt to avoid the calamity and resents how it shifts pressure toward the Chan Sect. 8

Personality

Yuanshi is reserved, cold, and highly protective of the Chan Sect’s standing. He views Chan Sect disciples as precious and believes they should not be casually exposed to worldly karma or the Investiture. 7 8

He is also politically perceptive. After Guangchengzi’s failure at the Third Sea Eye, Yuanshi identifies Zhao Xuan’s true method: not a contest of power, but a trap that turns every argument, threat, or refusal into evidence for the Accountability Ledger. 22

Yuanshi leaves Kunlun for Zixiao Palace amid discussions of the Investiture of the Gods. After the Jie Sect recalls its disciples, he suspects Zhao Xuan is responsible and realizes the withdrawal will redirect Heavenly Court pressure toward the Chan Sect. 1 8

Third Sea Eye Confrontation

When Guangchengzi fails to stop Zhao Xuan from demanding an audit of the Three Sects’ merits and demerits, Yuanshi intervenes personally through a voice from Kunlun. He orders Guangchengzi to return rather than force a confrontation that would give Zhao Xuan further material for the ledger. 20

Countering the Accountability Ledger

Yuanshi explains that Zhao Xuan’s goal is to place the Chan Sect “before the ledger.” He recognizes that direct arguments and attempts at suppression only produce more recorded evidence against Yuxu Palace. 22

He later acknowledges that Zhao Xuan’s Three Steles are protected not merely by their inscriptions, but by Tongtian’s willingness to defend them. 24

Investigating the Jie Sect

After the Dao Ancestor temporarily halts the public reckoning, Yuanshi supports a shift in strategy: exposing the crimes of individual Jie Sect disciples. He sends Antarctic Immortal to assist the investigation, intending for proven wrongdoing by Chang'er and Ma Yuan to undermine the Jie Sect’s claim of teaching without discrimination. 34
