Background

Gu Nanzhi joined an Immortal Sect at the age of six and became a World Walker of the Chen Family. While visiting relatives in Blackwater City, she was trapped there and later served as its County Lieutenant. Ten years before the city opened, she attempted to force her way across the Black River, but the entity within struck her down; the resulting injuries never fully healed and gradually weakened her cultivation 49 71 72.

Despite being trapped, Gu Nanzhi spent a decade maintaining the balance between the Yamen and the Blackwater Gang. The city remained chaotic, but her efforts prevented its population from collapsing further under the gang's rule and the effects of the citywide confinement 67.

After Blackwater City was opened, Gu Nanzhi returned to Anren Prefecture to seek her master. Her master declared that baleful energy had invaded her heart and that her future was hopeless, then intended to use her as an alchemical ingredient. Gu Nanzhi used the Immortal Talisman given by Lin Shu to ambush a senior fellow disciple and fled beyond Yong Province Pass, becoming a demon creature in the process 79 87.

The Chen Family subsequently designated her a traitor and demonic criminal. Rescued from the border region by Old Xu and the Maiden, Gu Nanzhi began living among the demonfolk and gradually encountered a markedly different way of life from that of the Immortal Sect 87 94 104.

Gu Nanzhi is a tall, slender woman with a gentle, pretty face and an authoritative, heroic bearing 42 48.

Personality

Gu Nanzhi is perceptive, self-assured, and unusually observant. On first meeting Lin Shu, she reconstructs his glances and deductions with unnerving precision, using them to identify his attention to her insignia and infer his assessment of her threat level 48.

As County Lieutenant, she is pragmatic rather than blindly idealistic. She understands the Yamen's limited authority against rogue cultivators and the Blackwater Gang, yet continues to protect the city where she can. She initially warns Chang Yi to keep away from Lin Shu, fearing the newly risen Fierce Wolf would exploit him, but revises her judgment as she sees Lin Shu repeatedly protect others 42 61.

Her long confinement leaves her exhausted and desperate for a path out of Blackwater City. Even so, she remains conscious of the lives depending on her and hesitates to gamble the city's safety on reckless action 67 68.

Gu Nanzhi's betrayal by her master breaks much of the composure she maintained in Blackwater City. She becomes terrified of the Immortal Sect's pursuit and initially begs Lin Shu to spare her, yet remains deeply concerned for Chang Yi and refuses to demand that the little demons risk their lives for her nephew without cause 87 105.

Living with the demonfolk changes her assumptions about demons. She is surprised by their willingness to risk themselves to rescue enslaved laborers without arguing over personal rewards, and she later serves Lin Shu's demon banner with professionalism and efficiency 94 122.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Blackwater City's County Lieutenant

Gu Nanzhi first appears when Chang Yi seeks emergency help for the falsely accused Zhao family. She releases Zhao's sister-in-law for the time being, but cautions Chang Yi that associating with Lin Shu may place him in danger 42.

She later visits Lin Shu personally, thanks him for helping Chang Yi resolve cases, and advises him not to stake his future on Blackwater City. She explains that the Yamen knows of the White Tiger Hall's pill-refining activities but lacks the power to act directly without provoking the city's rogue cultivators 49.

Alliance Against the Blackwater Gang

After Lin Shu's massacre at Ancient Pine Ridge, Gu Nanzhi realizes that he had saved Chang Yi and many civilians rather than merely seeking influence. She sends Chang Yi to guard Four Directions Street as the Chang family's answer to Lin Shu's intervention 61.

Believing Lin Shu to be an Immortal Scion's disciple, Gu Nanzhi organizes Yamen personnel to pressure the Blackwater Gang and demonstrate goodwill toward the power she believes stands behind him 67.

Slaying Mountain-Crushing Dragon

Lin Shu presents Gu Nanzhi with fabricated medicinal records concerning Mountain-Crushing Dragon's supposed hidden injuries. Though she recognizes the trap, the appearance of the Dragon Bone Plum—an item capable of healing her own wounds—gives her a reason to act 70 71.

She ambushes Mountain-Crushing Dragon and drives him into a defensive retreat with Sword Qi. Her injuries prevent her from ending the fight, but Lin Shu intervenes with borrowed Foundation Establishment power and kills the gang leader. He gives her the Dragon Bone Plum in recognition of her contribution 71.

Opening Blackwater City

Gu Nanzhi accompanies Lin Shu to the Black River and explains the danger of the Flood Dragon-like Dharma Artifact that had injured her ten years earlier. She guards him while he investigates the river using his soul-splitting ability 72.

After Lin Shu defeats Cheng Yi, seizes the artifact, and opens the city, Gu Nanzhi asks him to seek Yu Sheng's intervention on Blackwater City's behalf. She later learns that Lin Shu had acted without an adult Immortal Family protector and offers him sincere gratitude for freeing the city's population 75 78 79.

After the City's Opening

Gu Nanzhi intends to return to Anren Prefecture and see her master. She encourages Lin Shu to consider the Qi Family's Demon-Slaying Division due to its specialization in soul-based cultivation, though he declines because of the danger 79.

At Yong Province Pass, Gu Nanzhi reappears as the demon creature being sought by the cultivators. Lin Shu recognizes her, while Yu Sheng attempts to stop him from attacking her and insists that she is not an enemy 86.

Betrayal and Escape from Anren Prefecture

After returning to Anren Prefecture, Gu Nanzhi learns that her master considers her a failed disciple suitable only for alchemy. She escapes by using Lin Shu's Immortal Talisman to ambush a senior fellow disciple, then flees beyond Yong Province Pass in a panicked and deteriorating demonic state 87.

Lin Shu refuses to turn her in for the thousand-merit reward and permits Yu Sheng to conceal her demon aura temporarily. Before Gu Nanzhi can rest at the inn, Old Xu and the Maiden take her away to safety among the demonfolk 86 87.

Life Among the Little Demons

Gu Nanzhi remains badly injured after joining the little demons. During the White Tooth Mine rescue, the others keep her outside the mine and instruct her to flee if the operation goes wrong 94.

The operation exposes her to the demonfolk's solidarity. She is struck by their willingness to risk their lives to rescue laborers and their lack of interest in dividing rewards after the rescue succeeds 94.

Rescue of Chang Yi

When the Demon-Slaying Division captures Chang Yi and hangs him as bait, Gu Nanzhi fears that he is her nephew. Although desperate to save him, she cannot bring herself to demand that the little demons risk their lives for a relative of hers 105.

Xie Yutang and the other little demons nevertheless stand with her, while Lin Shu personally intervenes against the Demon-Slaying Division. After Chang Yi survives, Lin Shu arranges for someone within Yong Province Pass to watch over him and later promises Gu Nanzhi that he will seek an opportunity for aunt and nephew to meet 107 112.

Devour Moon Demon Banner

Gu Nanzhi becomes a subordinate of Lin Shu's Devour Moon Demon Banner and assists in organizing arrangements for the demon calamity around Stone Lake City 122.

Following the banner's accomplishments at Yong Province Pass, she departs alongside Xie Yutang, Monkey, Old Xu, and Red Face, carrying the Devour Moon Demon Banner toward Yong Province 127.
