Background / History

Obito was a classmate of Uchiha Mirai, Kakashi Hatake, and Rin Nohara. He had feelings for Rin but could not say so directly, instead claiming he merely did not want to be assigned to a team with Mirai or Kakashi. His resentment stemmed from both boys' superior ability. 12

Before awakening his Sharingan, Obito was regarded as a “dead last.” Mirai's display of a Three Tomoe Sharingan left him feeling powerless because he had not even awakened the clan's basic dōjutsu. 22 He later failed the Chunin Exam while Mirai, Kakashi, Rin, Kurenai, Asuma, and Might Guy advanced; despite his disappointment, he continued to insist that he would become Hokage. 39

During a Mist Village battlefield mission with Kakashi and Rin, Obito prioritized Rin's safety and awakened a single-tomoe Sharingan after she was injured. He treated the awakening as proof that he would eventually surpass both Kakashi and Mirai. 65 66

Uchiha Madara selected Obito as his successor during the Third Great Ninja War. Madara's scheme placed Rin and Kakashi in danger; Obito witnessed Rin's death and awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan in overwhelming grief. He nevertheless chose to pursue a world in which everyone's wishes could come true. 94 250

Madara transferred his knowledge of the Ten-Tails, Rinnegan, Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, and Moon Eye Plan to Obito before leaving him White Zetsu and the role of “savior.” 94 Obito subsequently abandoned his former identity, declaring himself Uchiha Madara. 101

Appearance

Obito conceals his identity behind masks and later bears visible damage from his battles with Mirai.

  • Wore a tiger-striped mask during his attack on Kushina Uzumaki. 120
  • After losing an eye to Mirai, his left eye was blank gray while his remaining Mangekyo Sharingan remained active. 122
  • Nine-Tails Chakra Mode covers him in a transparent golden-yellow chakra cloak. 122

Personality

As a student, Obito was loud, competitive, and easily provoked by Mirai and Kakashi's talent. His confidence survived repeated failures, including his Chunin Exam loss, and was closely tied to his desire to protect Rin and become Hokage. 22 39 66

After inheriting Madara's legacy, Obito became fatalistic and controlling. He believed people were divided from birth into winners and losers, then resolved to “sever the causality” of the world by creating a reality where every wish could be fulfilled. 94 He rationalized killing innocents as only temporarily ending their lives before restoring them in his ideal world. 101

Obito remained intensely prideful, especially when confronted by Mirai. Mirai's ability to analyze Kamui, defeat him, and expose his identity repeatedly reduced him to fear, anger, and embarrassment. 120 122 205 In his final moments, he acknowledged that his lifelong rivalry and the dream he devoted himself to had both been failures. 247
