Background

Rio was revived from the Fire Dragon skeleton on Black Horse Island and initially remained Liszt's greatest secret. When Liszt discovered Dodo Island's active volcano, Rio emerged from his body, assumed a dragon form, and plunged into the lava to cultivate. His tendency to disappear into the crater and ignore Liszt's calls established their early relationship as openly hostile and difficult to control. 550 551

As a juvenile, Rio depended on meat while in flesh-and-blood form and displayed intelligence comparable to an adolescent. Liszt learned his habits, sounds, and manner of reasoning in preparation for taming him. 554

Liszt eventually forced a decisive confrontation by feeding Rio Dragon-Bewildering Heart Fruit and entering his mental world through the Dragon Tooth Platform. There, Liszt defeated Rio's chained evil manifestation; a newborn, more docile Fire Dragon emerged from the experience. 647

Rio is a large, sharply built Fire Dragon whose appearance emphasizes destructive power rather than the refined beauty associated with Gem Dragons and Metal Dragons. 705

Rio is proud, tyrannical, greedy, and highly independent. His behavior reflects the evil nature attributed to Elemental Dragons: he resists control, values immediate benefits, and frequently requires potions or Fire Dragon Water as payment for cooperation. 647 957 1000

He is especially attracted to food, gems, gold, volcanic super-magic, and opportunities for destruction. While asleep, his dreams centered on robbing others and carrying treasure back to his crater lair. 650 In battle, he becomes excited and aggressive; throwing the Light Green Gem Dragon into the sea delighted him despite the strain of lifting it. 726

Although the Battle of Minds removed much of his early hostility and enabled a deeper bond with Liszt, Rio remains opportunistic. He later betrayed Liszt's trust by attempting to seize the Phoenix egg's essence for himself. 647 957
