Background / History

Sarutobi Hiruzen governed Konoha during the escalating distrust between the village leadership and the Uchiha Clan. After the Nine-Tails Incident, the Uchiha were relocated to Konoha’s outskirts and blamed for the attack despite their losses; Fugaku characterized this as Hiruzen’s suspicion of the clan. 6

He worked alongside Shimura Danzo in opposing the Uchiha. After Danzo’s failed attempt on Uchiha Shisui and subsequent death at Uchiha Yu’s hands, Hiruzen recognized that the Uchiha rebellion was imminent and ordered an emergency Anbu mobilization. 14 15

Hiruzen attempted to prevent the coup by ordering Uchiha Itachi to massacre the Uchiha Clan. He used Sasuke as leverage, agreeing to spare Yu and Sasuke only after Itachi accepted the proposed mission. 15 When the Uchiha surrounded the Hokage Building, he held Sasuke captive, publicly branded the Uchiha as traitors, and mobilized Konoha’s major clans to eradicate them. 16 17

During the resulting battle, Hiruzen fought Uchiha Yu and Uchiha Itachi with Enma’s support. He was initially pinned beneath rubble by Yu’s Great Luo Heaven, escaped by summoning Enma, and continued fighting despite injuries. 17 18 Yu and Itachi ultimately trapped him with a Great Luo Heaven-accelerated spear covered in Wood Release and Amaterasu, defeated Enma, and left Hiruzen unable to escape. Yu then executed him with Itachi’s sword. 20

Personality

Hiruzen presents himself as a defender of Konoha and repeatedly invokes the village’s peace and security. During the coup, he framed the Uchiha’s uprising as a threat to Konoha and ordered their complete eradication. 16 17

His decisions reveal a ruthless, calculating side. He was willing to have Itachi slaughter his own clan, use Sasuke as a hostage, and trigger an explosion that endangered Sasuke after Itachi rescued him. 15 16 He regarded the Uchiha as inherently dangerous and justified his actions against them on that basis. 19

In his final battle, Hiruzen acknowledged both his age and the possibility that he had been wrong. Once Enma was defeated and escape became impossible, he ceased resisting and accepted death. 18 20
