Background / History

Konoha is a ninja village in the Land of Fire. The Uchiha clan historically served as its Military Police Force, but after the Nine-Tails Incident, the clan was relocated from the village center to its outskirts amid distrust from the administration under Sarutobi Hiruzen and Shimura Danzo. The Uchiha regarded this treatment as political marginalization despite their past service and wartime losses. 6

By Year 55, the village faced an escalating conflict between its leadership and the Uchiha. Root agents infiltrated the Uchiha compound, Danzo moved to seize Uchiha Shisui's eyes, and the Uchiha began preparing a coup against Hiruzen's rule. 6 8 12

The conflict became irreversible after Uchiha Yu rescued Shisui and killed Danzo. Hiruzen responded by attempting to use Sasuke as leverage against Uchiha Itachi and by mobilizing Konoha's clans against the Uchiha. 14 15 16

Uchiha Coup

The Uchiha clan surrounded the Hokage Building and demanded Sasuke's release and Hiruzen's resignation. Konoha's major clans and prominent ninja—including the Yamanaka, Nara, Akimichi, Aburame, Inuzuka, Hyuga, and Sarutobi clans, as well as Hatake Kakashi and Might Guy—were mobilized against them. 16

During the ensuing battle, Uchiha Yu, Itachi, and Shisui defended the Uchiha against the village's combined assault. Yu used Wood Release to heal injured combatants on both sides, while he and Itachi ultimately defeated and killed Hiruzen. 17 18 20

Following the coup, the Sarutobi and Shimura clans were permitted to remain in Konoha or leave. Sarutobi Asuma led surviving members of the two clans toward the Land of Wind, where they sought support against the new regime. 21

Government

Sarutobi Administration

Sarutobi Hiruzen governed Konoha as the Third Hokage before the coup. His administration was closely associated with Danzo's Root Organization, distrust of the Uchiha, and covert plans to eliminate the clan. 6 15 16

Uchiha Administration

After Hiruzen's death, Uchiha Fugaku declared himself Hokage and consolidated control over Konoha. The major clans accepted his authority through a mixture of threats and inducements, while the details of the coup were kept from much of the civilian population and ninja reserves. 20 21

Fugaku was formally inaugurated as the Fifth Hokage. Envoys from the other four great ninja villages attended, and Sunagakure declared a permanent alliance with Konoha. 49

Root Organization

Root was a covert organization formerly controlled by Shimura Danzo. Its operatives wore patterned masks, distinguishing them from the animal-mask-wearing Anbu, and acted as Danzo's personal intelligence and assassination force. 6 12

After Danzo's death, Root remnants became fugitives and attempted to assassinate Fugaku ahead of his inauguration. Uchiha Yu and Orochimaru lured them into an ambush at the Uchiha compound; Aburame Torune and the remaining Root forces were killed. 45 46 47 48

Relations with Other Villages

• Sunagakure — Initially cautious of the Uchiha takeover and willing to shelter the Sarutobi clan, Sunagakure shifted toward Konoha after Rasa witnessed Yu's abilities and Gaara's attachment to him. It later declared a permanent alliance with Konoha. 25 28 49
• Iwagakure — Onoki permitted Deidara to take refuge in Konoha after Yu saved him from Akatsuki members. 42
• Otogakure — Orochimaru remained independent in Otogakure but agreed to assist Konoha in exchange for support for his research. 36 49
• Akatsuki — The organization identifies Uchiha-led Konoha as a major obstacle because of the Sharingan's potential to control Tailed Beasts; it intends to weaken the village by inciting conflict. 50
