Orochimaru earned his reputation during the Second Ninja World War and became one of the legendary Sannin. He was a disciple of Sarutobi Hiruzen, whose death genuinely grieves him despite his unchanged smile when discussing it with Yu 34 49.

His inhumane experiments led to his expulsion from Konoha. Accounts differ over who expelled him: Asuma recalls driving him out, while Orochimaru’s later negotiations identify Hiruzen as responsible. Losing access to Konoha’s resources caused his research to stagnate, making the Uchiha administration’s offer of support attractive 33 35.

By the time Asuma’s faction is expelled from Sunagakure, Orochimaru has his own hidden village, Otogakure. He sees the displaced Sarutobi clan’s roughly three hundred members as a valuable addition to its limited population 35 36.

His disregard for life coexists with genuine attachment and teaching ability. Orochimaru sends Asuma an invitation after Sunagakure expels the Sarutobi and Shimura clans. Appearing during Yu’s confrontation with the defectors, he shifts his attention to Yu’s Mangekyo Sharingan and body 33 34.

After overpowering Yu, Orochimaru accepts research support in exchange for assisting Konoha without abandoning Otogakure. He uses Manda to massacre the attacking Shimura clan and departs with the Sarutobi clan, neutralizing Asuma’s immediate threat to the Uchiha 35 36.

Root Purge and Rejected Return

Yu contacts Orochimaru to counter surviving Root operatives. Orochimaru impersonates Yamanaka Fu and leads Aburame Torune’s force into a prepared ambush at Fugaku’s home, then leaves the fighting to the Uchiha 45 47.
