Background / History

Root infiltrated the Uchiha clan compound to observe Uchiha Fugaku's planned coup. Its operative, codenamed Ryo, witnessed Fugaku rallying the clan and attempted to report the information to Danzo, but Uchiha Yu pursued, interrogated, and killed him. Ryo's tongue bore the Cursed Seal of Root Eradication, preventing him from revealing Root's intelligence even under interrogation. 6 7

After Ryo disappeared, Danzo concluded that an unknown Uchiha powerhouse may have intervened. He soon ordered Root to capture Uchiha Shisui and seize his Mangekyo Sharingan, viewing Shisui's genjutsu as a power that should belong to Root rather than the Uchiha. 8 11

Root members, alongside Anbu personnel, participated in Danzo's ambush on Shisui outside Konoha. Uchiha Yu intervened, defeated several Root shinobi, and rescued Shisui. Danzo was subsequently killed by Yu, removing Root's leader and making open conflict between Root and the Uchiha inevitable. 11 12 14

Following Danzo's death and the Uchiha coup, Root was hunted by Konoha. Although many members were arrested, surviving operatives continued to regard the Uchiha as responsible for Danzo's death and plotted revenge. 45 46

Structure & Methods

• Root members were adopted and brainwashed by Danzo from childhood; their loyalty to him exceeded their loyalty to Konoha. 45
• The organization used masks with varied patterns, unlike the animal-shaped masks commonly associated with Anbu. 12
• Root enforced secrecy through the Cursed Seal of Root Eradication, placed on operatives' tongues. 7
• Its personnel included shinobi ranging from Chunin to Jonin; one surviving cell contained four Jonin and nine Chunin. 46

• Shimura Danzo — Root's leader and sole authority; ordered the surveillance of the Uchiha, Shisui's capture, and the seizure of Shisui's eyes. Killed by Uchiha Yu. 6 11 14
• Ryo — Reconnaissance operative sent into the Uchiha compound to investigate the clan's activities; killed by Uchiha Yu before reporting the coup. 6 7 8

Final Purge

Root's remaining members initially planned to assassinate Uchiha Fugaku during his Hokage inauguration. Concluding that ceremony security was too strong, the group instead chose a nighttime assault on the Uchiha clan compound. 46 47

Orochimaru, disguised as Yamanaka Fu, redirected the force into an Uchiha trap under an agreement with Uchiha Yu. After the deception was exposed, Yu, Fugaku, Sasuke, Naruto, Deidara, and the Uchiha clan counterattacked. 47

Torune attempted to kill Fugaku using Kikaichu, but Yu used Great Luo Heaven to turn the insects against a Root operative before beheading Torune. The remaining Root members were surrounded and killed by the Uchiha; the clan suffered only three minor injuries. 48

Trivia

• Root's final operation was driven by vengeance for Danzo rather than loyalty to Konoha. 47
• Uchiha Yu considered Root more dangerous than Sarutobi Asuma's faction because of its indoctrinated loyalty, Jonin-level personnel, and capacity for covert sabotage. 45
