Background / History
Yu Xiaogang was present at Notting Academy during Lu Xiao’s martial-soul awakening. Although Lu Xiao displayed innate full soul power, Yu Xiaogang declared his Body Martial Soul “useless” and offered to accept him as a disciple as an exception. Lu Xiao rejected him and criticized his theories, but Yu Xiaogang remained convinced that Lu Xiao simply could not accept having a “trash” martial soul. 1
Du Busi confronted Yu Xiaogang over his judgment of the Body Martial Soul. Overwhelmed by Du Busi’s pressure, Yu Xiaogang wet himself in fear; Du Busi then struck him away, shattering his jaw and leaving him badly injured. The Dean expelled him from Notting Academy for offending Du Busi, giving him three days to move out. Yu Xiaogang nevertheless continued insisting that his soul-ring theory could not be wrong. 2
At his lowest point outside the academy, Yu Xiaogang intervened when a gatekeeper accused Old Jack and Tang San of forging Tang San’s Spirit Hall certificate. Recognizing the implications of Tang San’s innate full soul power and Blue Silver Grass martial soul, he deduced that Tang San possessed a second martial soul and saw him as an opportunity to prove his work. 7
Yu Xiaogang took Tang San to a dilapidated storage room near the academy and explained his deduction. He cited an investigation of 647 Blue Silver Grass martial-soul possessors, arguing that Tang San’s innate full soul power required a second, high-quality martial soul. Tang San accepted him as his teacher after Yu Xiaogang promised to push Blue Silver Grass to its limits, even toward Title Douluo. 8
In the Soul Hunting Forest, Yu Xiaogang guided Tang San toward a Lone Bamboo he believed to be at least four hundred years old based on its height. The bamboo was actually a mutated ninety-nine-year soul beast, making Tang San’s resulting soul ring a pseudo-hundred-year ring. Yu Xiaogang did not verify its age with soul power, relying instead on his own theory. 13 15
Following Tang San’s public humiliation and expulsion from Notting Academy, Yu Xiaogang reaffirmed his commitment to his disciple. He promised to find a way for Tang San to overcome the restrictions of twin martial souls and become an eighteen-spirit-ring Title Douluo. 22
After Tang San’s expulsion, Yu Xiaogang brought him to Shrek Academy, where Flender accepted Tang San despite the stigma of his pseudo-hundred-year ring. 103
Years later, Yu Xiaogang accompanied Flender in attempting to recruit the Golden Dragon Emperor and his companions into Shrek Academy. He introduced himself as the creator of the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul theory and attempted to entice the dragon-type martial-soul wielder with the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s dragonification methods. He did not realize that the masked Golden Dragon Emperor was Lu Xiao, the child who had rejected him at Notting Academy. 110
When Lu Xiao released his Golden Dragon might during the ensuing battle with Flender, Yu Xiaogang was once again frightened into incontinence and left paralyzed on the ground. As Flender fled while carrying him away, Lu Xiao threw the Golden Dragon Spear after them, grievously injuring Yu Xiaogang’s lower body. He later regained consciousness at Shrek Academy, where Tang San informed him that the damaged part was beyond recovery. 111 112
Appearance
After Du Busi’s assault and his expulsion, Yu Xiaogang is depicted as severely disheveled and visibly impoverished in appearance. 7 8
- Tattered, wrinkled clothing stained with dust and grime. 8
- Tangled hair, sallow complexion, and a hunched, listless posture. 8
- Bandages wrapped around his head following Du Busi’s attack. 8
- Initially maintained neat robes before being sent flying and bloodied by Du Busi. 2
- Following the Golden Dragon Emperor incident, he is left bedridden at Shrek Academy while recovering from his grievous lower-body injury. 112
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is prideful, dogmatic, and deeply invested in validating his martial-soul theories. Even after his public humiliation, injury, and expulsion, he repeatedly insists that his theories cannot be wrong. 2 7
He is also opportunistic in his search for disciples. He initially sought Lu Xiao after noticing his innate full soul power, then fixated on Tang San after identifying his twin martial souls as a means to restore his reputation. 1 7 8
Yu Xiaogang remains unable to accept rejection. Years after Lu Xiao refused him, he again attempted to recruit the Golden Dragon Emperor by presenting his theoretical authority and claimed dragonification knowledge as inducements. 110
Despite this self-interest, Yu Xiaogang defended Old Jack and Tang San from the academy gatekeeper and later remained devoted to Tang San after the latter’s expulsion. 7 22

Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang’s mutated martial soul is Luo Sanpao, a pale-purple, pig-like beast.

- Du Busi — Adversary; Du Busi humiliated, severely injured, and indirectly caused Yu Xiaogang’s expulsion from Notting Academy. 2
