Background

Cell aftermath and Qin Feng's arrival

Goku returns to Earth after learning that an unknown Saiyan, Qin Feng, killed Cell and surpassed Vegeta by an immense margin. Curious but confused by Qin Feng's unexplained existence, he soon challenges him at the World Martial Arts Tournament. Qin Feng defeats him after displaying the seemingly impossible ability to combine Super Saiyan power with Kaioken. 6 9

Broly crisis and Otherworld training

North Kai summons Goku after the Legendary Super Saiyan kills South Kai and devastates the South Galaxy. Rather than fear the threat, Goku becomes eager to face an opponent stronger than himself and uses Instant Transmission to investigate. 15 16

Broly badly injures Goku during the battle. Even while nearly unable to stand, Goku returns to the collapsing battlefield to rescue Vegeta, then evacuates Gohan, Trunks, and Krillin with Instant Transmission as the planet is destroyed. 19 21

Goku later remains dead by choice, declining resurrection so that he can train in the Otherworld alongside Vegeta. 22

Majin Buu conflict

After returning for the World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku witnesses Gohan's progress and initially refrains from challenging Qin Feng after seeing the gap between them. 27 31

When Majin Buu attacks, Goku unveils Super Saiyan 3 and strikes Buu with a full-power Kamehameha. Buu survives without injury, copies the technique, and forces Goku into a prolonged battle that rapidly exhausts his remaining time in the mortal world. 33 34

Personality

Goku is relentlessly battle-hungry. Warnings that an opponent is far beyond him consistently excite rather than deter him, whether the threat is Broly, Qin Feng, or the supreme beings of the multiverse. 15 54 137

His eagerness often makes him careless. He ignores warnings about fighting in populated areas, underestimates Uub during a spar, and forgets to use the Dragon Balls to resurrect North Kai and the others. 54 83 109

Despite this recklessness, Goku is protective and self-sacrificing. While critically injured by Broly, he returns to save Vegeta and exhausts himself evacuating his companions from a dying planet. 21

Defeat does not discourage him. After Qin Feng explains how insignificant even he is compared to higher gods, Goku admits that he had been “a frog at the bottom of a well” and becomes more determined to train. 130
