Background / History

Dai Mubai is a student of the original Shrek Academy in Suo Tuo City. He and Ma Hongjun discover another academy calling itself “Shrek Academy” directly across the street and treat its opening as a challenge to their academy’s standing. On the day before enrollment, Dai confronts Wu Sidu, claiming his own academy is the genuine Shrek and demanding an explanation. 1 3

His Evil Eye White Tiger martial soul is tied to the Star Luo Empire’s Dai family. The inherited counterpart is the Zhu family’s Nether Civet martial soul; generations of the two families have intermarried, with their inheritors becoming partners. Dai recognizes Wu Sidu’s Nether Civet immediately because his fiancée, Zhu Zhuqing, possesses the same martial soul. 2 18

Dai had fled the Star Luo Empire rather than risk death in its imperial succession struggle. He admits internally that he abandoned Zhu Zhuqing and hid in Suo Tuo City, spending his time in drunken indulgence instead of facing the conflict. 2

After the Suo Tuo group becomes associated with Monster Academy, Dai and his companions receive priority access to the academy’s resources. This privilege brings them into conflict with former Blue Tyrant Academy students, who reject the newcomers’ claim to those resources. 195 197

During the academy tournament, Dai recognizes Zhu Zhuqing among Shrek Academy’s students only after hearing her name. Seeing that she has reached rank 43 and become a formidable fighter reinforces both his regret at abandoning her and his desire to win her back as a means of challenging Dai Weisi for his lost position. 212 214

The threat of execution for losing the succession contest drives Dai to seek increasingly dangerous means of advancement. He accepts Tang San’s cultivation manual and later enters the Love-Questioning Valley of Heaven and Earth with the group. There, he qualifies for the God of Love’s nine trials by castrating himself, believing eventual godhood will allow him to restore his body. 307 311 317

After Monster Academy’s elimination from the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Dai and Tang San transfer to Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s Second Team as reserves through Xue Beng’s intervention. Their renewed participation allows Dai to defeat Dai Weisi, reversing their positions in the succession struggle. When his father subsequently refuses to execute Dai Weisi and objects to a eunuch inheriting the throne, Dai reveals his pursuit of godhood and declares that he no longer cares about imperial power. His father then promises imperial resources to support the trials. 327 330 331 336

The group is ambushed while traveling from Spirit City toward the Star Luo Empire. Dai is subsequently held in Spirit Hall’s Confinement Room alongside Tang San and tortured for their cultivation technique. He eventually surrenders the technique to Chrysanthemum Douluo and is released from confinement. 336 350

Dai Mubai is tall and broad-shouldered, with a muscular build and long golden hair. His most distinctive trait is his pair of heterochromatic eyes. 1

Personality

Dai is proud, confrontational, and highly protective of Shrek Academy’s name. He sees the new academy across the street as a deliberate provocation and confidently assumes that he can intimidate or defeat Wu Sidu due to his status as a three-ring Soul Elder. 1

His confidence frequently masks insecurity. After Wu Sidu defeats him, he refuses Ma Hongjun’s suggestion to involve Zhao Wuji—not out of restraint, but because doing so would reveal that they lost two-on-one to a girl. He remains focused on revenge despite his severe injuries. 3 38

Dai is also evasive about his past. He fled his family’s succession struggle and left Zhu Zhuqing behind, a choice that continues to trouble him when he encounters the Nether Civet martial soul. 2

Although he is readily provoked by Dai Weisi’s insults, Dai can restrain himself when confronting his elder brother on Shrek Academy’s grounds. This restraint collapses when Dai Weisi claims Zhu Zhuqing as his own, leaving Dai consumed by rage and later fear over the impending succession duel. 228 229 237

His wish to reclaim Zhu Zhuqing is entangled with his ambition and survival instinct. He sees her strength and connection to Shrek Academy as a potential way to regain political standing and overcome Dai Weisi, even considering dependence on her support as preferable to losing the succession struggle. 212 214

Following the imperial decree, Dai’s former bravado gives way to desperation. Aware that defeat in the coming Soul Master Tournament may mean death at Dai Weisi’s hands, he trains relentlessly in an attempt to reverse the overwhelming gap between them. 237 272

His pursuit of survival and power eventually reveals considerable ruthlessness toward himself. During the divine assessment, he decisively accepts self-castration for the chance to defeat Dai Weisi, claim the throne, and become a god. He endures the pain without screaming and treats the injury as a temporary sacrifice that godhood might reverse. 317

Dai’s declarations of devotion increasingly conflict with his private resentment. Although he names Zhu Zhuqing as his lover before the God of Love, Oscar regards this as hypocrisy because of Dai’s indulgent past and political motives. His hostility can also override loyalty to companions. When Ma Hongjun concedes against Shrek Academy, Dai kicks him off the platform and insists on continuing despite the obvious disparity in strength. His tournament efforts become tied to completing the first trial. After Monster Academy’s elimination, he accepts Tang San’s proposal to change teams rather than abandon their chance of success. Yu Xiaogang later states that both Dai and Tang San have completed the first trial. 327 336

• Ma Hongjun — Close companion who calls him “Boss Dai”; follows his lead in confrontations and schemes. Dai later defends him when Tai Long challenges his right to receive academy resources. Failed Pill Robbery

Dai, Tang San, and Ma Hongjun disguise themselves and ambush students from the opposing academy. Dai’s White Tiger Barrier fails under coordinated Soul Tool fire, reopening his existing wounds before he is knocked unconscious. Star Dou Great Forest Defeat

At a hotel near the Star Dou Great Forest, Dai once again confronts members of the opposing Shrek Academy. Yuanen Yehui, wielding the Titan Giant Ape martial soul and four purple rings, grabs him by the collar and throws him outside in a single exchange. 73

Suspicion Toward Star Luo

After learning that Shrek Academy branches have appeared in several cities—including one strongly endorsed by the Star Luo emperor—Dai suspects that his father and elder brother may be behind the academy that has repeatedly defeated him. He ultimately suppresses his anger, telling himself that the empire no longer concerns him. 147

Resource Dispute at Monster Academy

After Flender grants Dai, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun priority access to cultivation resources, former Blue Tyrant Academy students challenge their entitlement. Dai steps forward to defend Ma Hongjun after Tai Long defeats him, but the dispute is contained only after Flender and Zhao Wuji intervene. 195 197

Reunion with Zhu Zhuqing

While watching the academy tournament, Dai recognizes the vastly changed Zhu Zhuqing as his fiancée. Her strength, rank, and position among Shrek Academy’s students make him realize both how far behind he has fallen and how crucial reconciliation with her could be to his future. 212 214

Imperial Succession Crisis

Dai Weisi taunts Dai during the tournament and claims Zhu Zhuqing as his own. Their confrontation provokes the Star Luo emperor to decree a lethal succession battle: one brother will inherit the throne, while the other must die. As the disparity between his three-ring strength and Dai Weisi’s Soul Ancestor cultivation becomes unavoidable, Dai falls into despair and searches for any means to survive. Tang San later uses this threat to pressure Dai into accepting a cultivation manual. Despite his anger at Tang San’s blunt reminder of his possible death, Dai takes the offered copy, unaware that Tang San has stripped essential principles from the Mysterious Heaven Skill. 307

Love-Questioning Valley and Divine Trial Qualification

After entering the Love-Questioning Valley of Heaven and Earth, Dai joins Ma Hongjun in blaming Tang San for placing them in danger. Tang San counters by reminding them of the fates awaiting them if they cannot grow stronger. Dai later protests the valley’s questioning and is punished with golden lightning. 311 315

When asked whether he has a lover, Dai names Zhu Zhuqing and presents himself as deeply devoted. The God of Love challenges this claim by invoking his brothel visits and demanding self-castration. Dai initially tries to avoid answering the demand directly, but ultimately complies in pursuit of victory over Dai Weisi, the throne, and godhood. Tournament Defeat and Transfer to Heaven Dou

Dai represents Monster Academy against Shrek Academy alongside Tang San and Oscar in a three-on-three battle. After receiving Oscar’s Pink Sausages, he and Tang San attack using the Sunflower Manual without releasing their martial souls. Their speed impresses observers, but the opposing boy withstands their attacks and knocks both down with punches to the chest. 324 325 326

When Ma Hongjun attempts to concede the following contest, Dai angrily kicks him off the platform and challenges Shrek Academy again, only to suffer another easy defeat. Tang San then formally concedes. Dai objects because elimination threatens their chance of completing the first divine trial, but Tang San proposes exploiting the substitute rules to join another team. 327

Xue Beng arranges their enrollment in Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s Second Team as reserves. Dai answers suspicions about his Star Luo background by explaining that Dai Weisi is his mortal enemy and that joining Heaven Dou offers a chance for revenge. Their reentry provokes public outrage over the tournament loophole. 330 331

Victory over Dai Weisi

Dai and Tang San face Dai Weisi and Zhu Zhuyun in the tournament. Using the Sunflower Manual’s evasive movements and penetrating force, they gain the advantage immediately and secure victory after several exchanges. They subsequently help defeat Star Luo Royal Academy in the seven-on-seven team battle. 331 332

Dai confronts his fallen brother without affection and invokes the imperial rule requiring the loser’s death. Later, when their father asks how he wishes to dispose of Dai Weisi, Dai demands execution and rejects his brother’s pleas for mercy. 332 335

The Star Luo Emperor then refuses to let Dai Weisi die, arguing that Dai Mubai’s castration endangers the imperial bloodline. He proposes making Dai Crown Prince while preserving Dai Weisi to father an heir who can be adopted into Dai’s line. Dai regards the proposal as humiliating, reveals his participation in the God of Love’s trials, and rejects the throne as no longer important to him. After Yu Xiaogang states that Dai and Tang San have completed the first trial, the emperor promises to support their pursuit of godhood with the empire’s resources. 336

Ambush and Spirit Hall Confinement

Dai leaves Spirit City with Tang San, Yu Xiaogang, and the others under elite imperial guard. Two figures ambush their procession in a mountain valley and kill the guards at its head. Dai and Tang San subsequently appear imprisoned in Spirit Hall’s dark Confinement Room, bound to crosses and covered in whip wounds. 336 350

Chrysanthemum Douluo demands their cultivation technique, while Ghost Douluo argues that the divine inheritance can belong to whoever obtains it. Continued torture and the warning that captivity may prevent further trial progress eventually break Dai’s resistance. Under saltwater whipping, he agrees to hand over the technique and is released, leaving Tang San still bound and regretting that he had not surrendered first. 350
